Grade level and subject: First Grade, English/Language Arts

Summary/Overview of the The lesson is to make a KWL chart about fairy tales, and
lesson: then introduce the main elements of a fairy tale. Then the
kids will read the whole story “The Three Little Pigs” and
after, the children will share why they think the story is a
fairy tale, or not a fairy tale. Write down the thoughts on
the board with reasoning to it. For a more independent
learning, the students then pair up and draw a picture of
part of the story that is related to the fairy tale. Then to
explain the picture they drew, the children will write
sentences to explain what they drew.

BARRIER ANALYSIS and UDL REDESIGN

Multiple Means of Engagement

Barriers in Engagement UDL Modifications/Solutions

Identify and explain barriers in engagement With UDL principles and guidelines in mind, what
could be done to improve or change to reach ALL
students? Explain how and why.

A barrier in engagement that was found in To improve this, as a teacher I would have a
this lesson is sustaining effort and set of goals for the students and as a
persistence. There were no goals made at the guideline I would display the goal in multiple
beginning of the lesson and there was ways. I would then tell each of the students
nothing to challenge each of the students. to set mini goals as part of the main goal. I
would then challenge the students to try
their very best no matter how hard they find
the subject matter.

Technology for Supporting Engagement: What technology tools and/or resources could be used to
support multiple means of engagement? To support multiple means of engagement I would use technology by
having the children scan a QR code on the school Ipads and having the list of goals there on their desk while
they are working on the project. This is a fun way to engage technology in the classroom.

Multiple Means of Representation

A barrier in representation in this lesson is To improve and reach all of the students, I

This is an issue because some children may student that states all of the directions and
have a hard time hearing, and some could what is expected from everyone. I would do
have a hard time paying attention to this right after I explain verbally to all of the
directions by the teacher. children the directions. This is a great way to
give every child a way to understand what is
expected and what will be going on. There
should not be only one way to give
directions.

Technology for Supporting Representation: What technology tools and/or resources could be used to
support multiple means of representation? I would use an Ipad with a link to my website which has the
assignment and all of the rules. The students would have the assignment right on their desk on the Ipad, and
also on the hard copy that is given for more options.

Multiple Means of Action and Expression

Barriers in Action and Expression UDL Modifications/Solutions

Identify and explain barriers in action and With UDL principles and guidelines in mind, what could
expression be done to improve or change to reach ALL students?
Explain how and why.

The barrier in action and expression that I To improve this issue I would give different
found was that there was only one way to options and different ways to complete the

there might be children in the classroom would offer a short speech explaining their

that are given. way. A third option aside to the speech and the
original would be an online drawing, with a
short sentence that the students would type
out. This is a third option that would give the
children a different view on the assignment.

Technology for Supporting Action and Expression: What technology tools and/or resources could be
used to support multiple means of action & expression? A technology tool that would be used is a laptop. This
would be used by typing out a sentence then drawing with the mouse of the computer. This would be a great
way to make the students enjoy the assignment if they like technology more than regular pen and paper.
