PLANTS

Unit Completed by Teacher Candidate: Miss Pecchia

4/29-5/3/2019

Dear Families,
I am so excited to be spending an entire week teaching
your student all about plants! I have so many fun activities
planned and am looking forward to watching your student “grow”!

In language arts/social studies, we will be reading a story

about a frog who does anything he can to take care of his
garden. Your student will be asked to come up with ways to take
care of their own plant based on what we will learn about
regarding the needs of a plant. Then, we will finalize their
writing by making a class book and reading it at the end of the
week!

In math, we will learn about graphing different types of plants.

Your student will be able to identify the different components
of a graph, as well as how to complete their own bar graph
related to different plants.

In science, we will learn about the needs of a plant, the life

cycle of a plant, and the different parts of a plant. At the end
of the week, your student will plant their own bean seed and
watch it grow!

I am so eager to begin teaching this unit on plants that I have

included ways that you can work with your student at home!
Enjoy!
Sincerely,
Miss Pecchia

Nature Scavenger Hunt
Explore the world around you by taking a nature scavenger
hunt! Make sure you are in an area surrounded with trees
and plants to examine. Bring this list of questions with
you and try to find answers while you explore.

 Can flowers grow on trees?

 Why do plants and trees have roots?
 Are there any leaves that we can eat?
 How does a flower look different from a leaf?
 Why do trees have branches?
 Why does a tree have bark around it?
Enjoy a Plant-Part Dinner
What You Will Need:

 Cookbooks/Recipes
 Variety of foods that represent the parts of a plant,
such as:
-roots: carrots, beets
-stems: asparagus
-leaves: spinach, lettuce
-flowers: cauliflower, broccoli
-fruits: peaches, tomatoes, cucumbers
-seeds: nuts, peas, beans
What You Will Do:

 Plan a plant-themed dinner menu for the week. Ask your

student to name each part of a plant and what the
particular plant part being served that night does.
 Serve at least one item representing a plant part each
day of the week.
 Test your student at the end of the week by asking them
if he/she can remember what roots they ate this week?
Stems? Seeds?
 Ask him/her to decide what their favorite plant dinner
item was this week. Their understanding of a plant will
really be cooking!
