IMPORTANT SCIENCE INFORMATION

Dear Families of First Graders,

I am the student teacher for Mrs. Bracken and I have been guiding the students during their
learning of science. I am so excited about this unit on pumpkins!

We have been learning about pumpkins in Science and look forward to learning more in the
coming week. To introduce the study of pumpkins, we learned about living and non living by
observing earth worms and gummy worms and discussing the facts about each as well as the
details and reasons why they are either living or non living. In our unit on pumpkins,we have
read books, dissected a seed, discovered the parts of a plant and heard a new song to develop
our understanding of the parts of a plant.

After discovering information about the life cycle of a pumpkin, I have decided to provide a
pumpkin to take home to each of the students. Please take time to use this pumpkin as a
decoration on your porch. Perhaps carving or writing on the pumpkin with your child would be a
great activity and fun addition to their learning on a remote learning day.

In order to extend the learning, I invite you to help me by placing your pumpkin
outside of your home and allowing the pumpkin to decompose. Part of the life cycle
of a pumpkin is the decay and decomposition process that the pumpkin undergoes and the
cycle starts all over again. I am certain your child will be delighted to experience this pumpkin
miracle!

Thank you for all you do to support the learning for your child!

Sincerely,
Ms. Theys
