Draft Video Script – The Process of Onboarding

Video Intro (5 seconds)

VOICEOVER
Think back to a time when you were at a new job and felt completely lost. Yes, you accepted the
job, attended orientation, and know what time your lunch is but did you really understand the
work culture you just stepped into? Would having an online site that guided you through the
work culture help excel in this new job? (Insert clip art/video that pertains to this)

Intro to Onboarding (10 seconds)

VOICEOVER
The first few months of a new hire are critical to the employee experience. Many newly hired
employees feel like they cannot ask certain questions and it can be overwhelming. Onboarding
helps new hires to “retain and engage talent”. Giving these new hires the right tools will lead to a
productive long-time employee.

Orientation vs. Onboarding (15 seconds)

VOICEOVER
Orientation should not be used in place of onboarding. Orientation is used as an introduction and
time to look at paperwork. Onboarding is a “comprehensive process involving management and
other employees that can last up to 12 months.”

Questions before you start Onboarding (30 seconds)

VOICEOVER
7 questions presented by SHRM.org that you should think about before creating an onboarding
plan. 1.) When will onboarding start? 2.) How long will it last? 3.) What impression do you want
new hires to walk away with at the end of the first day? 4.) What do new employees need to know
about the culture and work environment? 5.) What role will HR play in the process? 6.) What kind
of goals do you want to set for new employees? 7.) How will you gather feedback on the program
and measure its success?

Creating an effective onboarding site (30 seconds)

VOICEOVER
You can create an onboarding site for your employees that includes welcomes
notes/announcements. Photos can also be included of employees or the office. Company
acronyms and anything that will help the new hire get to know the culture of the workplace. Job
responsibilities, virtual copy of the employee handbook, and FAQs are all recommended to put
on the site.

More effective ways to onboarding (30 seconds)

VOICEOVER
Highlighting the culture, building relationships, and most importantly gathering feedback are tips
that will help you create an effective onboarding site. By “highlighting the culture” you can show
the beliefs, values, and how your employees work with one another in your company. (Insert a
video showing this.) It is important to note that new hires want to see real employees and not just
CEO’s of the company. “Building relationships” is a great way to get employees connected. New

hires should be introduced to co-workers more than once. “Gathering feedback” is one of the
most missed tip. By implementing surveys into the onboarding site you can see how well your
new hire and management are working together. Make sure the survey is short.
