Dissection Contract

Biology | 2019 | Mrs. Roberts & Mrs. Beers

This contract is to establish proper procedures for dissection labs that will be taking place in Biology over
the next 2 weeks. Please read this document carefully and sign at the bottom. *You may not participate in
the lab activities without a returned dissection contract.*

Attendance:
The nature of dissection requires attendance in class. To encourage students to be in class, students will
be awarded a grade for every day that they are in class participating in discussion/lab. If a student has an
excused absence (parent note/blue slip), missed points can be made up. Students can attend a different
class period during a study hall OR arrange a time to stay after school to catch up on the missed time.

Basic Dissection Procedures:

1. Student will receive lecture notes.
2. Students will be provided with written, oral and visual instructions for proper dissection
procedures.
3. Students should follow the instructions and not develop their own procedures.
4. Clean up will begin approximately 10 minutes prior to the end of the period.

Basic Clean-Up Procedures:

1. All dissection instruments must be washed and dried.
2. Specimens must be stored as directed.
3. Each lab table must be cleaned with sanitizer.
4. Proper clean up is required (it is part of your overall grade).
5. Students will not be dismissed from class until all lab tables have been checked for cleanliness and
all instruments/specimen have been accounted for.

Basic Rules:
1. Students will be assigned a lab partner, and must work with that lab partner.
2. All specimen/specimen parts/instruments are to remain in the classroom.
3. Goggles are required (and will be provided).
4. Aprons are required (and will be provided).
5. If you want to wear gloves--YOU must provide them. If you do not have gloves; you are still
dissecting.
6. You are working in a laboratory environment--you should act like a professional. Adhere to all lab
rules, requirements and expectations.
a. Reminders: Long hair must be pulled back; long sleeves pushed up; no dangling jewelry;
no open toed shoes; legs should be covered; no food or drink.

*Consequences will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
● Removal from lab
● Loss of points
● Detention
● Office Referral

Accident Procedures:
If you thoroughly read instructions and follow directions accidents can be avoided. In the event that
something does happen, report it to your teacher/lab aide IMMEDIATELY. D o not try to fix the
problem yourself. Do not pretend that nothing happened.

Other Important/Helpful Information:

We must work together to maintain a safe lab environment. You and your partner are a TEAM. Be
supportive, kind and fair. Keep an eye on your partner for any “adverse” reactions to dissection. Everyone
is affected differently by dissection on a day-to-day basis. It is normal. If you and/or your partner are
experiencing any of the following symptoms, step out of the classroom and use the buddy system →
never go alone and let the teacher/aide know that there is a problem: Lightheadedness; dizziness; nausea;
sweaty palms; dry mouth; loss of color.

Tips:
● Bring Vicks Vapor Rub (used under the nose to block smell)
● Menthol cough drops/peppermint gum/mints
● Gloves (to help with texture aversion).

I have read and understand the procedures concerning classroom dissections. I agree to follow all of the
rules outlined in this contract.
