Hearst Magazines UK the trading name of National Magazine Company Ltd, established in 1910 by
William Randolph Hearst, and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hearst Corporation.

The completion of Hearst’s acquisition of Lagardère SCA’s international magazines business in


August 2011, united National Magazine Company and Hachette Filipacchi as one organisation—
Hearst Magazines UK.

Hearst Magazines UK have entertained, informed and empowered audiences across the UK since
1922. It comprises 19 magazines and 26 websites including media super brands, Cosmopolitan,
Digital Spy, ELLE, Esquire, Good Housekeeping and Harper’s Bazaar. Hearst Magazines UK is the UK’s
largest digital magazine publisher and reaches 12.1 million adults in print and 43 million unique
users online every month*.

Hearst Magazines UK has interests in two joint ventures in partnership with some of the world’s best
publishers:

-Hearst Rodale UK: A 50:50 joint venture with Rodale Inc, which focuses on health and wellbeing.
Hearst-Rodale publishes Men’s Health, Women’s Health and Runner’s World, their companion sites
and pureplay sites (triathletesworld and fetcheveryone).

-COMAG: A 65:35 joint venture with Condé Nast, one of the U.K.’s largest magazine distributors.

Their overall goal as a magazine company is to create premium, purposeful content that helps our
audiences and partners strive, thrive and get more out of life. They create best in class content and
experiences that inform, entertain, enrich and inspire. They help their audiences take action improve
their lives and feel positive.

What is the purpose/importance of magazines?

The overall purpose of a magazine is to inform, educate and entertain.

The importance of construction magazines in our daily lives are important because it's our source of
entertainment. It's also very informational, and a lot of people read magazines. Whether it's
celebrity gossip, politics, or other topics, there is a wide range to choose from that will satisfy the
reader's interest.

Magazines are produced in a wide range of subgenres with a specific focus on particular subjects
such as health, food, cinema, video games or music.

Genre
Entertainment journalism deals with information of the entertainment industry such as films,
television shows, events, music, fashion and video games among others. The main purpose of this
type of journalism is to entertain.

Lifestyle and celebrity

This is focused on celebrities and their lifestyles and feeds off television soap operas, reality
television, members of royal families. Red carpet reporting and interviewing of celebrities during
film festivals and award shows are part of entertainment journalism.

Film
A review or analysis of a motion picture released to the public. The critic's review or analysis is
subjective and informative, with a focus to inform and entertain the consumer.

Video game

A form of journalism that covers all aspects of the video game industry.

Specific conventions of entertainment magazines-

Masthead- The name of the brand, the font used for a masthead is used to add character to the
magazine, it also makes the magazine instantly recognisable and noticeable. it gives the magazine its
brand identity.

Tagline- gives you an insight on what the magazine is about and who its aimed at, it may also make
an impact on the reader therefore persuading them to buy it.

Coverlines- Gives the reader just enough insight on wha twill feature in the magazine.

Central image- Takes up the magazine front cover, usually entertainment magazines use an image of
a celebrity to bring global attraction.

Colour Scheme- makes magazine instantly recognisable. entertainment magazines usually use bright
eye-catching colours to help attract their audiences. Common colours used include red and yellow
because they are bright and bring attention.
