TIPS TO START WRITING A SHORT STORY


1. WRITE A DRAFT.
2. CHOOSE MAIN CHARACTERS, SETTINGS.
3. DEVELOP PLOT: CENTRAL CONFLICT, EMOTIONAL CLIMAX, ENDING WITH TWIST OR SUPRISE. SHOW
DON’T TELL!
4. READ IT SEVERAL TIMES TO CHECK GRAMMAR MISTAKES AND VOCABULARY, USE ADJECTIVES AND
ADVERBS.
5. WRITE YOUR FINAL VERSION.
6. HAND IN YOUR ASSIGNMENT TO THE TEACHER.

STEPS TO WRITE A SHORT STORY

1. Start with an idea


2. Pick a point of view: first person “I” or third person “She or He”.
3. Develop your main characters: feelings, moral characteristics, appearance
features, decisions,…etc.
4. Choose at least one setting where the story is taking place.
5. Develop the plot:
- introduction: CATCHY FIRST PARAGRAGH, characters and settings are
established.
- rising action: events are built up to the conflict, excitement, tensión, crisis.
- climax point: the climax usually occurs in the last half of the story or close to the
ending, it is the moment of highest interest of the story.
- falling action: events began to resolve
-conclusion: the end of the story with a happy or tragic ending.
