Ichabods set to play for MIAA Tournament Championship

The Washburn Ichabod men’s basketball team has advanced to the championship

game of the MIAA tournament which will take place at Kansas City’s historic Municipal

Auditorium on March 10.

The gates will open at noon with game time set for 1 p.m. at Municipal Auditorium,

which is located on West 13th Street near the Kansas City Convention Center.

The Ichabods advanced to the title game with wins over Southwest Baptist

University in the quarterfinals and Pittsburg State University in the semifinals. The team

will face number one-ranked Northwest Missouri State in the championship, who has yet to

lose this season.

With a win, Washburn would get the MIAA’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

Despite a great regular season, the players have loftier goals and know what’s at stake.

“We have a lot to play for,” said senior guard Javion Blake. “They’re a really good team.

We’re probably playing one of the best teams in the country, so we just have to be prepared to

play.”

Washburn Basketball Back in Conference Championship

Washburn University was founded in 1865 as Lincoln College. The name of the

school was changed three years later to Washburn College after industrialist Ichabod

Washburn pledged $25,000 to the school.

In 1905, Washburn started a basketball team, which was coached by Harry C. Byrd.

In the 114 years of the program’s existence, the team has won 21 conference

championships and one national championship. The Ichabods currently compete in the

Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association conference.

In addition to the Ichabod’s one NAIA national championship in 1987, it also won

the 1925 AAU national championship. In 1989, the program made the move from the NAIA

level up to the Division II level, which is where it currently competes.

Bob Chipman was the head coach from 1979-2017 and leads the program with 808

career wins, which is 24th in college basketball history.
