INTRODUCTION:
by. If we all did that, Earth would be
Somewhere in deep space…
The explosion ripped through the
ship, the length of its hull. The captain
had been killed instantly, and one of the
navigators was mortally wounded. He
was being tended to in the medical
quarters.
“It’s the Tecknology,” Navigator
Windless said in an angered tone. She
looked like she might be about to break
under the pressure of the situation.
“Stow that, Windless,” First
officer Nichols commanded. “I don’t
want to hear that kind of talk from you
ever again!”
Windless stepped up to her full
height and stood across from Nichols.
“Sir, the Tecknology fails, the ships
don’t work anymore. Do you really
think it’s fair that we’re sent out here to
die just because our bosses need to earn
a few bucks since the budget is blown?
Huh? Well, I for one don’t want to die
this way!”
Nichols stared at her for a
moment. The muscles in his jaw worked
quietly. When he finally spoke, it was
with the authority of his new station.
“The fact remains, Windless that we die
when and where we’re told to die. As
long as you bear a rank, you have to do
your part to protect the world from the
hoards of invaders that would destroy
the Earth you so dearly want to go home
to.”
Windless was trying to stare
Nichols down, but she blinked first.
Nichols continued, gaining
strength as he went on, “Just because
you think we’re about to die, you can’t
go and forget everything you promised.
You promised to protect the Earth even
at the cost of your life. Just because it
isn’t a pretty death doesn’t mean that
you can throw away the values you lived
lost. Have you forgotten what kind of an
honor it is to be chosen for this world’s
space program, Windless? …Now so
help me god, if I hear another word out
of you, I’ll slap you in irons for mutiny.”
Windless bowed her head, tears
rolling down her freckled Iowa farm-girl
cheeks, “I’m sorry, sir.”
Nichols slowly nodded and then
turned to look at the rest of the surviving
crew. The communications officer,
weapons specialist, and the master
technician all stood staring at the events
with a morbid fascination. They all
seemed to think it might have ended
with someone dying.
“What are you staring at? Don’t
you people have a damn job to be
doing!?” Nichols bellowed, his face
nearly turning purple.
The crew scattered like roaches
when the lights came on.
“Crewman Moore!” Nichols
addressed one of the officers, “Send out
the distress beacon. And double check
to make sure it has the right amount of
range.”
The communications officer
jumped into a seat in front of a smoking
computer panel and began taking it
apart, checking the amount of damage.
“Andrews, I want to make sure it
wasn’t an attack, I need weapons and
sensors back online, pronto,” Nichols
explained, and the technician moved
with renewed purpose to some of the
destroyed equipment.
Nichols watched as the crew
worked. He found himself thinking of
Captain Christine Drayfus. She had
been a good, strong leader, and he found
himself wondering if he had the same
reserve of strength she would have used
to carry the day. He knew the situation
was grave. And while he couldn’t afford
to lose the crew’s loyalty in this crisis,
he found himself forced to admit that
Windless was right. Without a budget,
the ships Tecknology couldn’t be
repaired, and being stuck on the Frontier
without any contact with Earth, there’s
no way to fix the waning budget. It was
a catch .22, and his crew was stuck in
the middle of it.
The first officer brushed some of
his brown hair, matted by sweat from his
forehead. He was pretty sure the crew
would end up seeing that he was as
scared as they were, but until then, he
would do his best to be like Captain
Drayfus. Drayfus never asked her crew
to do something that she wasn’t willing
to do herself, so he rolled up the sleeves
of his uniform coveralls and moved over
to Andrews.
“What can I do?” he asked.
Andrews pulled his head out of a
panel and looked at Nichols for a
moment. “You can hand me that
wrench, the fiber optic replacement
cables and the biological gel packets…
then, you can pray.”
Nichols did as he was told, even
the praying part.
Minutes turned into hours and
the silence on the bridge was
overwhelming. Panels were strewn
everywhere as Andrews worked hard to
get all the essential systems back up and
running. Windless stood at her station,
trying to get a fix on their current
position in space, and the others went
about doing what they’d been ordered to
do.
The hissing of the doors seemed
like a death toll. Dr. Fairchild walked in,
wiping his hands with a white rag. He’d
just washed them. Nichols looked at the
man who seemed impeccable, despite
the disaster—not a single one of his
perfectly blond hairs was out of place.
Nichols was reminded why he never
liked Fairchild, or any of his type.
Nichols hated people who thought they
were perfect, and Fairchild had the
audacity to actually look the part.
Dr. Fairchild shook his head as
all eyes turned to rest on him. Windless
collapsed in tears against her consol, and
Nichols silently raged inside. Goddamn
him. Thinks he’s God’s gift to the
medical field, and he can’t even save the
life of one of my crew. One of his own
crew…Nichols found he was forced to
remind himself that Dr. Fairchild
actually was a member of the crew.
Suddenly, however, the thickness
of emotion brought on by the bad news
was cut in half by the emergency
lighting system, which switched back
over to normal lights. Nichols tried not
to let any of his glee meet his face when
he turned to Andrews.
“Thank you, Mr. Andrews,” then
he turned to the doctor. “That’ll be all
Dr. Fairchild.”
“Perhaps I should take Miss
Windless back to the medical quarters. I
have medicines to help her distress,”
Fairchild said in an icy-smooth voice.
“Perhaps her friend and fellow
navigator just died, Doctor. Some of us
deal with our grief, rather than pilling it
away,” Nichols said firmly.
Windless looked up at Nichols
with what seemed to be a grateful face.
Several consoles began to beep
and Nichols turned to face Andrews
eagerly. Please let it be good news.
“Report!” Nichols barked.
“Telemetry is back up, I’ll have a
fix on our location momentarily,”
Windless said quickly through her tears.
As the reports came flooding in,
Dr. Fairchild slipped from the bridge, the
doors hissing shut behind him.
 Crewman Moore nearly shouted
his report. “We’re getting something,
sir!”
“Put it on the squawk,” Nichols
commanded, listening as the sound of
communications static filled the room.
“…Have received your distress
signal…in route to your position…a
report of your condition…”
The faces of the entire crew
brightened, as they knew their
deliverance was at hand. There was
clapping and cheering all around.
Nichols remained silent for a moment
and then finally bellowed over their
celebration.
“Wait. Wait…WAIT!”
The crew fell silent.
“What ship is that? We were the
only one out in this sector of deep
space…so who is it?”
The crew exchanged glances.
“Are our sensors up and running,
Andrews?”
Andrews nodded and darted over
pieces of electronic equipment, manning
the empty navigation station. “I’m
detecting a ship that doesn’t match any
known starship we currently use.”
“Is it one of those damnable
Etherships?”
Andrews shook his head. “It
doesn’t match anything in our data
banks, sir.”
Nichols soaked that in for a
moment. “Then who is it?” he breathed.
“I’m not sure, sir, but they’re
close. They’re coming along side, and
their ship is as big as ours.”
Nichols didn’t say a word as he
broke open the weapons locker and
passed the energy weapons out amongst
the bridge crew. He gave orders for
people to take up positions and then took
off with the weapons officer, McDaniels,
towards the airlock.
“Out of the frying pan, sir?”
McDaniels asked.
Nichols shot him a sidelong
glance as they navigated the cramped
hallways of the ship. McDaniels always
had a way of blowing off stress. But
then, McDaniels was a Border Control
Division Marine—nothing seemed to
stress him out.
The first officer and the marine
arrived and checked the readings on the
computer. There was only one life form
in the airlock, and it registered as
human.
McDaniels shrugged, making a
face. “Maybe it’s safe, but be careful
anyway, sir. It might be an alien in
disguise. They can sometimes do that.”
Nichols nodded and brought his
gun up, opening the hatch.
Both Nichols and McDaniels
stared in shock at what they saw.
The man standing in the doorway
was tall and muscular. He had a crew
cut interrupted only by a small braid by
his right ear, and was wearing simple
clothes. A tunic and lose pants with tall
brown leather boots and a wide leather
belt made up his entire outfit.
The reason it was shocking was
because the man looked just like a Jedi
from Lucas’s Star Wars movies—and
after all, what self-loving technocrat in
the Void Engineers doesn’t worship
Lucas. Worshiping him, and believing
that Star Wars was real, however, is two
different things.
“I mean you no harm,” the Jedi
explained in a perfectly calm voice. “I
am Elijah Burk, and I’d like to help.”
LEXICON:

Aliens – Any creature that is not human. There are thousands of different types of alien
species. They can all be classified as Humanoid, or Non-Human, indicating how similar
to the human race they are. Basically a Jedi calls any Umbral creature an alien.
Attunement – A Jedi’s level of ability with the force. Arête.
Bacta – A liquid that facilitates healing or organic species. By using the Life sphere, the
Jedi created Bacta which is a soup of micro-organisms that help to heal a person. It is
technological magick and is therefore coincidental for the most part.
Droids – Any kind of artificially intelligent companion. A familiar.
Focusing Crystal – An essential component involved in the creation of a Jedi’s weapon
of choice: the lightsaber. The focusing crystal can be created artificially (i.e. through the
use of forces magick, the crystal is actually a foci) but artificially created focusing
crystals tend to malfunction and can cause problems for the Jedi who uses a lightsaber
made with one (paradox). Lightsabers function best when a natural crystal can be found.
These rare crystals can be found only on the planet Crystalis in deep space. (Fire spirits
bound into crystal form can allow for a Fetish lightsaber rather than a magickal one.)
Hyperspace – The Vulgate. A part of the Umbra with openings to nearly everywhere in
the Universe including the Dark Umbra or the Tellurian. By traveling through the
Vulgate, a ship may cross extensive distances rather quickly. It is necessary, however to
have a spirit guide through the vulgate in order to keep from becoming lost. This usually
takes the form of an Astromech droid familiar (R2-D2) because of their “ability to
calculate all of the hyperspacial coordinates necessary for the journey.”
Jedi Mind Tricks – Rotes.
Maya – A sector in space that plays havoc with ones sensor readings. It is unpredictable
and subject to Ion Storms and sudden changes in astrophysical laws. The Dreamrealms,
and also the Dreamlords.
Midi-clorians – A microorganism that flourishes in beings strong in the Force.
Measuring the amount of Midi-clorians in a person helps to establish their potential for
using the Force. In mage terms, measuring the amount of Midi-clorians in a person can
tell how much quintessence they can naturally channel (i.e. the Avatar background).
Midi-clorians are actually spirits or creatures from the Umbra attracted to the excess of
primal energy in a mage.
Outer Space – The Umbra.
Space Ship – Any craft that allows a Jedi to get into the Umbra.
The Dark Side – The destructive, entropic side of the Force. Calling on the Force when
angry or afraid accesses the Dark Side. Use of the Dark Side involves Entropic
Resonance. The Wyrm. (Note that the discipline involved in calling on the Force at all
gives the Force user a certain amount of Static Resonance).
The Light Side – The growing, expanding, loving, and peaceful side of the Force. Jedi
Knights are supposed to tap into this part of the Force over the Dark Side. Performing
magick while accessing the Light Side involves Dynamic Resonance. The Wylde.
The Living Force – The energy source that springs from all living things and flows
through the entire universe. Quintessence.
 Jedi? You’re kidding, right? You
must be thinking something like this
right about now. My response is this:
how can so many Star Wars fans be
wrong? Millions of fans all over the
world dressed up in the robes of a Jedi to
go see the premier of the long-awaited
Episode I. With Episode III now
complete who can deny that there are
plenty—indeed, hundreds—of people
who fantasize about what Star Wars
would be like if it really happened.
Then, of course, there are those real
oddballs who think, or at least would
like the rest of the world to think, that it
did.
With a base of that much culture
to draw from, and a philosophy of
intrinsic goodness verses evil, why not
Jedi? They seem to be the perfect
synthesis between the Technocracy and
the Traditions. They have all the
spirituality of the Akashics and the
Celestial Chorus, combined with the
technology use of the most advanced
Void Engineers.
HOW TO USE THIS BOOK:
This book is designed to bring a
little humor to the dark gothic world of
mage. It’s also designed for all those
Akashic brotherhood fans out there who
like the modern, and post-modern
samurai-style stories that the Jedi can
inspire.
This book is made mainly up of
three parts. The continuing story,
showing how the Jedi can fit into a
chronicle is the first part, and will
always be led into by a key phrase like
“Meanwhile, back on the Jedi
spaceship…” The second part is the
description of the Jedi craft as a whole,
explaining what they believe and how
they function as mages. This part will
be found under individual headings.
And the third part of this book is
contained in the dark gray boxes. This is
special system information for people to
understand this book and how it relates
to the World of Darkness as a whole.

THE BEGINNING OF THE JEDI
CRAFT:
The Jedi mages can be traced
back to the actions of one man: martial
arts master, Dr. Yang Jwing-Ming.
Master Yang, as his students call him,
began his career in the Chinese martial
arts in Taiwan as a child. He began, by
study Kung Fu, but was quickly forced
to take up the more philosophical and
healthy martial art of Tai Chi Chu’an due
to health problems and ulcers.
Tai Chi, known for it’s study of
“chi” or life force energy, is designed to
balance the body, mind, and spirit to
bring a person into harmony with
themselves and everything around them.
Master Yang’s study of this art led him
to become a Chinese herbalist and
acupuncturist; however his brilliant mind
led him to greater heights.
Yang went to America, to study
engineering and optical systems at Perdu
University, where to his delight a group
of fellow college students asked him to
teach them martial arts. After a stint in
Houston as a martial arts instructor and
an engineer for Texas Instruments Inc.,
Master Yang relocated to Boston where
the stress of his life as an engineer
caused his old health problems to
resurface.
Yang quit his job with the
engineering company he was working
for and devoted all his time to his
school, using his studies and teachings
of Tai Chi to regain his health.
As a scientist, however, he
constantly challenged the more
traditional ways of thinking and
explored the ideas behind Chinese
martial arts using the scientific method.
Today, Yang regularly lectures to
Harvard Medical School about the
benefits of Chinese medical theory, and
the ideas of spiritual energy and balance.
Of all his eccentric behavior, one
led directly to the development of the
Jedi among mages. Yang, an avid Star
Wars fan would often refer to the
spiritual energy of Chinese martial arts
as “the Force.” His students were taught
about ancient Chinese masters and their
theories, but those masters were often
referred to as “Yoda,” by Yang. He even
referred to his best students as “Young
Jedi.”
It was shortly after he came to
Boston in 1980 that his student Andre
Morales came to him. Andre was seven
years old, and a Star Wars fan himself.
For the longest time during his
childhood, Morales did nothing but go to
school and train in the martial arts.
Something about the martial arts spoke
to Andre and he was very serious about
it, quickly earning himself the title of
“Young Jedi.”
After Andre graduated school, he
chose not to go away to college, but his
parents respected his decision,
recognizing in him a great skill in the
martial arts. Andre didn’t socialize like
the other kids his age either. While they
were off dating and meeting women,
Andre was busy getting a job at the
school, working for Master Yang, so that
he could continue his training
indefinitely.
Even Master Yang found himself
impressed by the amount of time and
work that Andre put into his training.
Master Yang’s “Young Jedi” pushed
himself through studies that even the
most dedicated Chinese students
wouldn’t bother with. By the time he
was 22 years old, Andre’s martial arts
had become a way of life for him, and
his training rivaled even that of the
Shaolin monks in China.
Shortly after that, Andre began to
push himself even harder. Master Yang
advised against it, fearing that Morales
would burn himself out, or injure
himself. Andre refused to listen, and
consistently took himself through more
complex routines as well as deeper
meditative studies. That lasted until a
few days before his 23rd birthday.
That was when Morales got a
visit from Yoda.

The Yoda Avatar:

Modern science fiction, and epics like Star Wars in particular, have taken on the
role that mythology used to play for mankind. We use epics of science fiction to explore
the same parts of a human soul that more primitive societies used to dissect using myth
and legend. Because the modern mind is more comfortable with the ideas as they are
presented by science fiction, the Archetypes that were given to us by mythology are
easily seen in their new forms as they appear in these stories.
It is because of the relationship between epics like Star Wars and epics like
Homer’s Iliad or the Odyssey that the Avatar’s of some modern mages are taking on more
modern appearances. Rather than a god or a demon from the past, some avatars can
appear to people in a new form—like Andre’s avatar, which looks like Yoda.
Almost all of these redefined avatars are of a Dynamic nature, however a few can
be Pattern or Questing. Also, almost all Jedi have the Manifest Avatar merit, allowing
their avatar to appear to them in the form of some ancient Jedi master.
Later on, we will discuss spirits who appear as characters from the movies, but
these spirits are Maya (or dream creatures) created by the unconscious belief of millions
of raging fans, not to be confused with the guiding force behind Andre and his band of
misfits.

Back in deep space… Nichols blinked for a moment,

“Great,” Nichols said, raising his
energy gun once more, “We’re being
saved by a marauder!”
The Jedi’s face betrayed only a
hint of anger. “I am not a marauder,” he
said tersely. “I am here to help, and
considering the position you’re in, I
don’t think that shooting me is an
option.”
Nichols barked a laugh, “Really?
And just how are you planning on
helping us?”
“I was thinking of offering my
skills as a technician, as well as my own
ship’s oxygen reserves to help your
failing life-support.”
lowering his gun. McDaniels laughed
out loud.
“Of all the odd help to get,” the
marine said, still chuckling.
Nichols quickly snapped out of
his state of shock. “You have extra
oxygen?”
“I’m also a very skilled
mechanic,” the Jedi repeated.
The two Void Engineers looked
at one another. Without the need to say a
word they knew what the other was
thinking. When you’re trapped in deep
space, you take what help you can get.
After all, it was not the first time that the
Void Engineers were forced to accept
help from strange sources. It wasn’t
something they advertised to their
colleagues, however.
“All right. Where do we begin?”
Nichols asked.
“Where’s your captain?” the Jedi
asked.
“I’m the Captain,” Nichols said,
angry at having been reminded of his
recent loss.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t realize you
had lost your captain. My condolences.”
Nichols blinked and then nearly
raised his gun once more, “Quit reading
my mind, goddammit!”
“I’m not,” Elijah explained
calmly, even under the onslaught of the
fury in Nichols’ words. “I happen to
know the ranks and uniforms of the Void
Engineers. You’re not the first one I’ve
met. You bear the rank of first officer. I
can only assume that means you lost
your captain in the recent accident.
Again, I’m sorry for your loss.”
All the time that Elijah spoke, he
guided Nichols and the Marine into the
airlock and back to his own craft.
“Where are we going?” Nichols
asked, trying to change the subject.
“We need to prepare the
umbilical arm from my ship. It can
transfer power and oxygen indefinitely
until repairs can be completed.”
Nichols and McDaniels followed
and when the doors slid open onto the
Jedi’s ship, they looked around in shock
and awe. It was a real ship. It was built
using a Tecknology near to the Void
Engineer level of excellence, but it was
also a replica of the Republic Cruiser
that transported Qui Gon-Jinn and Obi
Wan-Kenobi in the beginning of Episode
I.
Elijah moved over to a control
panel near the airlock and his fingers
moved over the various switches and
buttons with expert precision.
Nichols and McDaniels watched
in silence.
“Is your umbilical collar a type
AE17 or a CX34?” Elijah asked, without
looking up from his task.
“How in God’s name do you
know so much about us?” Nichols
demanded.
“I told you, I’ve met Void
Engineers before,” Elijah looked up, his
face calm and unreadable. “I’m trying to
help you. That’s going to require a little
bit of trust on your part, Captain.”
Nichols nodded, “Fine, it’s a
CX34.”
“Good,” Elijah smiled as he
spoke, “that means we don’t need to
retrofit the umbilical arm. I just need to
know where your umbilical port collar
is?”
“Next to the airlock,” Nichols
said.
A screen flashed to life as Elijah
turned back to his computer panel. It
showed the hull of the Void ship. The
docking ring between the two ships was
to the right of the screen, and a small
round plug-like device was visible right
next to it. After a moment, the two Void
Engineers watched as a robotic arm
extended from the Jedi vessel, clutching
a tube. The end of the tube was shaped
to mate the plug device on the side of the
Void Engineer’s ship, and did so with
ease. In another moment, the sound of
machines activating and pumping
oxygen to the Void ship echoed through
the metallic vessel belonging to the Jedi.
Elijah stood up straight and
turned to face Nichols and McDaniels.
“There, now, if you have any
wounded, my medical bay is completely
functional, and I have supplies. If your
own medical facilities are damaged, we
can move the wounded here.”
 “We only have dead, not
wounded.”
Elijah nodded solemnly. “Well,
then place me under the direction of
your engineer, and I shall endeavor to
help make repairs. I have some supplies
and tools that I’ll retrieve before
returning to your ship.”
“I think I’ll just go with you, to
make sure that’s all you’re bringing on
board,” McDaniels said, voicing the
reservations that Nichols obviously felt.
“As you wish,” the Jedi said.

A Note On Compatibility:
The Jedi take oaths to aid any life form in need. To that end, they have fit all their
ships with Tecknology that is compatible with the Void Engineers. After all, VE were
some of the first Jedi.
While the Tecknology on a Jedi ship is still quite different, it was built using many
of the same principles that were used to build the Void ships. In game terms, that means
that when it comes down to it, a Jedi can use Void Engineer Tecknology or vice versa.
The magick roll is made as per usual, however due to the use of unfamiliar Tecknology,
the difficulties are increased by +1 to +3 depending on the situation.

THE CRAFT’S FORMATION: Andre ran, and disappeared in the

Initially Andre was welcomed
into the Akashic brotherhood, and his
creation of the Jedi as a group did not
come until years later.
For the most part, he shared
many of the same beliefs that the
Akashic Brotherhood espoused, and he
became a member of the more modern
Li-Hai sect of the Akashics.
There were many Akashic
Brothers, however, that were concerned,
claiming that Andre’s pre-occupation
with Star Wars and his wild claims that
his avatar came to him in the form of
Yoda were the makings of a marauder.
Meanwhile, Andre’s avatar
continually egged him on, and inspired
him to create a paradigm based on the
beliefs and ideas of the Jedi. Over the
next few years, his paradigm evolved to
include all six Star Wars movies, the
books, and comics.
Eventually the Brotherhood
labeled Andre marauder and a small
group of Brothers hunt him, considering
it their duty to protect the world from the
menace that is Andre Morales.
heartland of America, finally going to
college, where he studied engineering
and aerospace technology.
It was not long after that
however, that he felt the pulled towards
a new quest. Yoda constantly came to
him, in dreams and visions telling him
that his spirit had been trapped and he
was in desperate need of rescue. Yoda
told him of a planet in deep space called
Maya, where he was held prisoner.
In truth, his avatar was sending
him to find a spiritual manifestation of
Yoda, kept alive by the dreams and
hopes of millions of Star Wars fans.
Over the course of the next year,
Andre searched in vain, trying to find a
way off-planet. His hopes were finally
answered when he ran into a semi-crazed
Son of Ether, who had built an
Ethership, which resembled one of the
ships from the Star Wars movies, but it
wasn’t until he met the Void Engineer A.
Bell Caine before he considered flying
the thing.
With A. Bell’s help, and after
recruiting a band of misfit mages from
other Traditions, Andre tore his way through the Avatar Storm and took off
for the planet Maya.

The Maya:
Dreams hold an unusual amount of power in the Umbra. In the realm known
amongst the Dreamspeakers as the Maya, or Dreamrealm, nearly anything is possible.
Dreams that are shared by groups of people are given life and survive for long periods of
time, while the dreams created by a sleeping person might pop in an out of existence very
suddenly.
Powerful Umbral spirits also called Maya, or Dreamlords weave these surreal
landscapes of dreams into kingdoms over which they rule, making travel in Maya
interesting, if not dangerous.
Only the most experienced Dreamspeakers made use of the Dreamrealm until the
Jedi discovered the existence of vast Star Wars related dreams there. There are movies,
TV spin offs, cartoons, books, comics, RPGs, and all kinds of action figures, which keep
the Star Wars dream alive. In Maya, these dreams take on the forms of planets, aliens,
and even characters from the movies with which an enterprising young Jedi may interact.
Even the Jedi Temple and the fabled Jedi Council exist in the Dreamrealm. Yoda
himself is a minor Maya because of the sheer amount of belief in him.

On the bridge of a Void ship… “And what, Mr. Andrews?”

Elijah Burk had been working for
several hours. Chief Technician
Andrews watched carefully as Elijah
went over the task he’d been assigned
for repair. Nichols was off in another
location, but McDaniels kept an
untrusting eye on Burk as well.
There had been a ripple of
comments and the titter of laughter when
Burk finally came up to the bridge.
They all thought he was crazy.
The doors hissed open and
Nichols walked in, looking over the
scene on the bridge.
“Andrews, come here,” he
commanded.
Andrews got up from the console
he was sitting on, and walked over.
Nichols looked at him angrily.
“What the hell are you doing just sitting
around? Do you want this guy to repair
our ship by himself?”
“No, Sir…we were just watching
because we didn’t really trust him.
And…”
Andrews lowered his voice
conspiratorially, “Besides, Mr. Nichols,
his Tecknology is odd. It’s not exactly
like ours.”
“Does it work?”
“Well…”
Nichols looked annoyed. “Well,
what?”
“It seems to, but we don’t know
how well until we can test it.”
Nichols nodded. “Do you think
it will get us out of this sector and near
an outpost?”
Andrews considered that
question for a moment. “I think so, sir.”
“Then get everyone working. I
want out of here sometime this year.”
“Yes, Sir,” Andrews said, and
moved back into the room.
Before Andrews had an
opportunity to order the other crew to
various repair jobs, a yellow flashing
alarm went off along with a lout blaring
klaxon.
 Elijah sat up and put aside his
tool calmly. Nichols and Andrews were
shouting out orders, and the bridge was a
complete state of confusion.
“What’s going on?” the Jedi
calmly asked Nichols who was busy
making sure the charge on his weapon
was full.
Nichols looked up anxiously,
“That’s the proximity alert. There’s an
alien ship approaching and it probably
means we’re going to be attacked. If
you want to protect your ship and that
umbilical arm, I suggest you get back
over there.”
Burk shook his head. “I have a
doid that can help protect my ship. I
shall stay here and look after you and
your crew, Mr. Nichols.”
Nichols nearly scoffed, “With
what? Your lightsaber?”
Elijah’s lips turned up into a
small smile. “Yes.”
“Whatever, Jedi, just don’t get in
the way of my crew.”
Burk gave a nod and then headed
off towards the airlock.
“You don’t wanna go there!”
Nichols called after him.
McDaniels had a large weapon
set up on a tripod facing the airlock. He
looked up when Burk came down the
hallway in his direction. With a chuckle,
McDaniels shook his head.
“You don’t wanna be here, Jedi,”
the marine said. “This is probably where
they’ll come in, and whoever’s here is
most likely going to die.”
Elijah smiled a bit. “I’m ready to
die protecting you and your ship. I can
see you are as well.”
“Jedi to the last, eh?”
Burk nodded, withdrawing his
lightsaber.
McDaniels gave him a sidelong
glance. “Does that thing really work?”
Rather than answering, Burk
depressed a button on the surface of the
metallic cylinder and it flashed to life
with an energetic hum. The sword-like
cone of energy shot from the tip of the
metal, and extended half the length of
Burk’s body.
“And you can block lasers and
stuff with that?” McDaniels was
obviously impressed.
Burk smiled and nodded.
“So where do you come from?”
“If we survive this, I’ll be happy
to show you. You’re near the Jedi
Temple and Coruscant.”
“You’re joking, right?”
Burk shook his head but held up
his hand to cut off any other
communication between the two of
them. “I’m sensing several life forms
nearby. They’re here.”
And they were indeed.
The Umbrood:
Aliens of the Deep Umbra are known as Umbrood, and are rarely friendly to
encroaching humans, mages or not. There are a few shamans and Dreamspeakers who
know who to talk to and who to avoid, however, for the most part, these creatures can be
expected to react violently to any invaders.
Jedi work to develop peaceful relationships with the few aliens willing to talk
before attacking, and have thusly developed a dialogue with some of the creatures from
the Deep Umbra, however they stand steadfastly ready to defend any space explorers
from unprovoked attack.
This includes offering their protection to Void Engineers, Sons of Ether, and even
Dreamspeakers. For more on the forms that Umbrood take, look in The Book of Worlds
for Mage the Ascension, and Umbra as well as Axis Mundi: The Book of Spirits for
Werewolf the Apocalypse.
To capture the feel for space-style battles of science fiction, for use with either a
Void Engineer or a Jedi campaign, I recommend that a storyteller at least look over the
rules for the Trinity game also put out by White Wolf. That particular RPG is a great
source for fully compatible equipment and weapons for a science-fiction campaign. Also
a storyteller might want to alter Unbral combat so that it reflects a more physical
universe. Of course things are different for werewolves and shamans, so the usual
Umbral combat system would still apply for them.

THE JEDI IN THE UMBRA:
Following the quest that Yoda put
him on, Andre Morales stumbled upon
something that would change the face of
Jedi as a group of mages. Up until his
trip to Maya, Andre questioned his own
sanity, and often wondered if he weren’t
living out some delusion. When he and
the mages he brought with him found
Yoda, however, it was a way of proving
that the Jedi can exist—if not in the
sense that the movies were real, in the
sense that what the movies symbolized
was real.
 But Yoda wasn’t the only thing
that Morales found on his quest. He
discovered the existence of a small piece
of the planet of Coruscant, which
included the Jedi Temple and the
spiritual reflections of the aliens that sat
on the Jedi Council.
While the spirits of the Jedi
Council were not as powerful as Yoda,
they all had some power. With the
power of the Council, Yoda, and the
mages, that part of Maya was torn
asunder and made into a sort of
Dream/Horizon Realm.
With the new realm in the
Umbra, Morales had several things he
never had before. He had a base of
operations, leaders in his spiritual
beliefs, and the sudden need to teach
more people about his beliefs.
Embarking on his new quest,
Morales now seeks to create a Jedi
Academy to teach youths about the
Force and awaken them to its power.

Coruscant:
Coruscant is the central planet in the Galactic Republic, and was featured on the
new ending to the Special Edition of Return of the Jedi as well as having several featured
shots of screen time in The Phantom Menace. Between those pictures of the planet, and
the things written of it in the many novels and comics, a certain amount of belief has
gown around that planet.
This belief, combined with the might of the Maya spirit Yoda, allows this planet
to hover just inside the Maya dream realm, in it’s entirety. It is still a dream realm,
however, and very unpredictable.
The only portion of Coruscant that is held in any state of permanence is the Jedi
Temple and a few surrounding landing platforms for ships. The rest of the planet is
subject to odd weather, sudden changes in surroundings and the appearance and
disappearance of occupants due to the ephemeral nature of dreams.
It was once said that Andre Morales observed the spiritual reflection of an entire
Star Wars RPG session there on the planet’s surface, as the dreams and imaginations of
some youngsters were stirred into life by their game.
The Jedi Temple:
The Temple itself is in stark contrast to the squared off buildings and neo-stylized
sculptures of the rest of the planet of Corsucant. The Jedi Temple is main building with
four towering spires. It has an organic/rounded look to it, as apposed to the look of the
other buildings there.
Inside the temple, many windows allow light to come in. There are gardens, with
pools, and classrooms for Jedi students. For storytellers who wish to have a more in-
depth description of the temple and its occupants, I suggest looking into Scholastic Books
Jedi Apprentice series of books or the D20 Star Wars RPG Books by Wizards of the
coast.
For the creative storyteller who just wishes to wing-it or to make up a description
of the temple, think: techno-Akashic.

Near the airlcok… “You saved my life,” McDaniels

McDaniels picked juicy pieces of
alien flesh from his uniform coveralls.
He looked over at Elijah who stood
impassively, there was alien blood on his
tunic, but that was all.
“I’ve never seen anyone move
like that. Save for maybe those Akashic
Tradition folk,” McDaniels said calmly.
Elijah glanced over at him, and
then turned back to watch as Andrews
repaired the hole in the airlock the aliens
used to come in.
“We live a life of discipline and
training. The Akashic aren’t much
different, although a bit less tolerant of
our views.”
admitted. “I am in your debt. Without
that lightsaber, we’d both have died
several times back there.
Elijah smiled and patted his belt
where the cylinder was stowed. “Yes, it
does come in handy doesn’t it?”
“You said a moment ago, that
‘we live lives of discipline,’” McDaniels
said, suddenly curious. “What does that
mean? There are more people like you?”
Elijah nodded.
McDaniels looked at the Jedi for
a moment. “Your head is shaved and
you have that braid. Isn’t that a sign of
being a Jedi apprentice?”
Elijah again nodded. “Yes. I
was dispatched from the Jedi temple
when we received your distress signal.
We’re in the Maya Sector, on the planet
Coruscant. My Jedi Master, Andre, was
busy with other duties. I was told that
responding to this would be part of the
tests to show my readiness to be
declared a full Jedi Knight.”
McDaniels nodded, impressed.
“Well, Jedi, if you need a character
witness, I would be happy to tell them
you performed the duties of a Jedi
Knight well.”
Elijah smiled and held his hand
out to where McDaniels sat. McDaniels
grabbed the hand and heaved himself up.
“You said something about
taking me to where you came from?”
“As soon as your ship is able to
fly, I would recommend that you and
your ship move to one of the landing
platforms near the Jedi Temple to finish
your repairs. Then, I would like to talk
to Mr. Nichols about opening diplomatic
relations with the Void Engineers.”
McDaniels blinked and shook his
head. “I’m just getting over the fact that
there’s supposed to be the planet
Coruscant somewhere out there.”

The Lightsaber:
The Jedi lightsaber is perhaps his single most important tool. Without it, they are
nothing more than force adepts. It is the symbol by which the Jedi enforce the Jedi Code.
The lightsaber is a powerful tool, able to deflect lasers, dissolve regular projectiles
(including bullets), and cut through nearly anything.
There are two different types of lightsabers. There are those using synthetic
focusing crystals, and there are those using “natural” focusing crystals. Synthetic crystals
are foci for mages to create a lightsaber with a forces effect. Even Talisman lightsabers
are considered synthetic to the Jedi because of their tendency to store paradox and
malfunction. Natural lightsabers are actually Fetishes created using certain fire spirits
attracted to the nobility of the Jedi and their Code.
Creating a lightsaber is the ultimate test, telling a padawan they are ready to
become a full-fledged Jedi. There are a number of resources at the Jedi temple to help
create such devices. Books, diagrams, power supplies (i.e. tass and quintessence
streams), as well as instruction are all available.
The first type of lightsaber is simple and easy to make. A small book instructs
each Jedi padawan, or apprentice, how to create this device. A roll must be made against
the mage’s skill in Hypertech, with a varying difficulty based on resources and parts
available. This device is a simple focus, but the crystal must be synthetically created
using forces 2 and prime 2 against a varying difficulty (based on whether it’s vulgar, or
the mage has access to a node, etc.), however, the mage must make roll and garner at
least 7 successes (this is usually done as a ritual). And finally, the Jedi is required to make
another Arete roll every time the Jedi wishes to activate his new Hypertech device
(forces 2 and prime 2 are also required).
 The more powerful lightsaber Talisman is usually created when a Jedi becomes a
master (which happens when a Jedi reaches his 5th dot in a sphere or when he takes on a
padawan—indicating that he has at least 5 dots in Do). The Talisman comes with a
power reserve, which must be replenished (a quintessence battery), and can only be used
by a Jedi or some other creature that shares the Jedi’s paradigm. This means that both
enlightened and unenlightened Void Engineers and Star Wars geeks the world over can
use the Talisman.
The use of the forces saber and the Talisman saber are both subject to full
paradox, and barring the Jedi using it in the middle of a Star Wars convention on Earth,
use of the devices somewhere within the Tellurian is most definitely vulgar.
The second type of lightsaber, the Fetish saber, is very difficult to create because
it requires several things. Number one, it requires that the Jedi have at least a spirit
sphere of rank 4. Among the other requirements, the Jedi must make/perform the
Crystal-seeking Rote (meditation is usually used as a focus for this Rote, requiring a
successful meditation roll as well). The Rote (correspondence 1, spirit 2) calls to all fire
spirits who would be willing to enter into a pact with the mage. The pact must actually
be formed, which requires the mage to additionally agree to terms set down by the spirit,
which could be as simple as the agreement to follow the Jedi code to the letter, or as
complex as offerings, or the performance of some pre-agreed task (storyteller’s
discretion). After the pact is formed, the Create Fetish Rote must be successfully
performed and then the lightsaber is finised.
The advantage of creating the Fetish is obvious. As long as the Jedi lives up to
the compact he created with the spirit, his lightsaber will function anytime and anywhere
without the effects of paradox. Failure on the Jedi’s part to live up to the pact with the
spirit, however, can have disastrous results. The spirit will, at the very least, leave the
service of the Jedi and gaining the trust of any other fire spirit after that will be at a +3
difficulty. Most likely, however, the failure of the Jedi to live up to the pact with cause
the spirit to attack the Jedi, or perhaps some pre-arranged punishment, which was part of
the pact itself, will be enacted.
No matter which type of lightsaber is being used, it will do aggravated damage.
The first type of lightsaber (i.e. the focus saber) causes different amounts of damage
depending on the number of successes on an Arete roll that activates it. For every
success over those required to activate the saber, the mage gains an additional 3 points of
damage for the damage roll—plus the mage’s strength, of course. The focus saber can be
made without the use of prime, but the damage done by this device is only lethal, and is
considered to be a learning tool for apprentices who aren’t ready for a fully powered
lightsaber yet.
The Talisman saber’s damage depends on the creation process of that Talisman
itself, however it must be made using prime, and the damage is always aggravated,
reflecting how truly dangerous the weapon of a Jedi Master is.
The amount of damage caused by the Fetish depends on the strength of the spirit
who is bound into the device. Rules for spirits can be found in the booklet accompanying
the 3rd edition Mage Storyteller’s Screen. On average, however, these devices should do
about strength +4 damage. Because of the spiritual nature of a Fetish, this damage is
considered aggravated as well.
Lightsaber Duels:
By the rules of all the 3rd edition White Wolf games, combat has become a fast
and furious event that ends rather quickly, usually with the death of one of the
combatants. This reflects a cinematic and very realistic way of fighting. While all those
high school fights we got into may seem like they took a while, most of them lasted only
a few seconds, and then they were over. Guns and knives only up the ante on such
combat, making them faster, and more deadly.
However, the cinematic effect of a Jedi slashing his way through hordes of
faceless enemies is very different from that same Jedi killing a Sith lord in a single swipe
as the battle begins. Therefore, I highly suggest that for combat between Jedi become a
little more complex. Rules for Klaive dueling from Werewolf the Apocalypse, or the
swashbuckling style of combat outlined in Mage the Sorcerer’s Crusade Players Guide is
very appropriate for such a cinematic battle.
Note also that while a lightsaber is going to slice many, if not most weapons to
pieces (give the weapon a soak rating if it is used to block a swipe from the saber, and
then roll damage naturally), there are some weapons that can and will successfully stave
off a lightsaber’s deadly sting. Anyone who has a Klaive, grand Klaive, any sword or
knife empowered by quintessence, primium weapons, and etc., can successfully roll a
block and not need to worry about their weapon being destroyed.

Other Jedi Gear:

A Jedi utility belt carries a number of different objects that might prove invaluable
to a Jedi. On field missions, Jedi carry a basic kit consisting of food capsules (life 2),
medical supplies (There are two types of Bacta. One is a foci – life 3 for self-use, life 4
for others, and the other is actually a micro-organism which speeds mortal healing times
by half their normal rate), multitools, and other essential devices. Also carried regularly
by Jedi are the communicators (correspondence 2) seen used between Obi Wan and Qui
Gon during Episode I. These communicators are fully capable of transmitting data as
well without the need for a separate roll (assuming that the communicator was created
using Hypertech and is capable of sending data). Jedi also use grappling spike launcher,
which are filled with liquid cable dispensers (matter 3). Simple holographic projectors
can be created using Hypertech (forces 2). During missions that require a Jedi to go to
planets with water on them, the A99 Aquata Breather is used (correspondence 3, matter
3). Training remotes as seen used in A New Hope by Luke Skywalker can be created with
Hypertech (forces 3 for the energy weapon, entropy 2 for randomized attacks and varying
levels of challenge). And finally, thermal detonators as seen in Return of the Jedi can be
created to cause massive explosions in small areas (see explosive rules, and roll forces 2
with each intended victim within the area of effect raising the difficulty by one as a
threshold).
ALEK FERREL, AOIF, ELIJAH
BURK, AND THE OTHERS:
While on his mission to save
Yoda, Andre Morales met several other
people who became very influential in
the creation of the Jedi as a group.
Before their space journey, Morales had
promised his Void Engineer pilot that he
would help check up on the Void
Engineers to see what, if anything, had
happened to them.
When the Avatar Storm struck,
the Void Engineers on Earth lost contact
with the VE in space. Without so much
as a peep from the Cop or Darkside
Moonbase, the Earth-based VE were
floundering, lost. In space, the Void
Engineers ran into more desperate
troubles. Their technology was
mysteriously malfunctioning, they had
no money to justify any new research,
and the Nephandi seem to have
redoubled their efforts against Earth.
So after completing his own
quest, Andre happily took the ship to the
Cop itself. Because of the information
gathered through this valuable
communications, the Void Engineers are
working to save themselves. Indeed, the
pilot, a man named A. Bell Caine, had a
directory position on Earth, and was able
to coordinate with a clone of Eva Raum,
the director of the VE. Due to this
dialogue, the VE is developing a way in
and out of the Umbra, bypassing the
storm altogether, by traveling through
the Digital Web.
A. Bell Caine has promised to
help Andre Morales by giving him the
same Tecknology allowing passage
between the real world and the Jedi
Temple, should it become available.
Most recently, the tests of this
Tecknology proved successful, and have
allowed people to “beam” through the
Digital Web, into the Umbra. Morales
has quickly worked to put this
Tecknology into service.
Upon leaving the Cop, while still
deep within VE space, Morales’s
expedition came across a VE ship that
was about to explode. In a daring
rescue, Morales and his crew managed
to save the life of the only survivor left
on board. The man was named Alek
Ferrel, and he was brought to the Jedi
Temple to recover from his wounds.
After he had recovered, grateful
to Morales for rescuing him, and
impressed by the bravery of the Jedi, he
asked to learn more. Eventually, he even
became a student at the temple, learning
to synthesize the VE technology and Star
Wars tech that was so valuable to Andre.
It was predicted by the Jedi
Council, that Ferrel would complete his
training at the temple and be ready to
become an apprentice very soon. It was
also said that Ferrel would go on to
become a powerful Jedi Knight.
Ferrel was not the only new
recruit that Andre has found, however.
While traveling in the Maya Sector of
space, on the way to Coruscant, Andre
and his crew ran across a strange and
powerful woman named Aoife. Aoife
claimed to be an elfin knight performing
a final service to a dead lord.
Her mission was one of basic
kindness and Morales offered to help
her. When the mission was completed,
in response to the help offered her, she
swore and oath (that she claims is
unbreakable) in service to the Jedi Code
and in honor of the Jedi Council.
Indeed, she has yet to break this oath,
and she remains one of the Jedi’s
staunchest supporters.
Elijah Burk is the final piece to
the puzzle. To put it bluntly, and
unkindly, Elijah was one of those pimply
teenage outcasts who spent more time
and money on the fantasy of Star Wars
than he did on life. After all, he didn't
like his life, and Star Wars was the
greatest escape he'd ever found.
Morales, in the search for new
Jedi students, had founded a school on
Earth, connected through the computer
beaming Tecknology to Coruscant.
Somehow, word of the got to Elijah, and
upon encouragement from his parents,
he decided to go there.
The school itself claims to focus
on technology, offering a multitude of
opportunities for students once they
graduate. The school, funded largely by
gifts from A. Bell Caine and other
philanthropists is merely a front. The
teachers that were hired have no idea
what the school really is. The Jedi
Council keeps close tabs on the students
there by way of their dreams, which the
Maya can naturally sense.
After Elijah's arrival, Andre
allowed him to discover the computer
Tecknology leading to Coruscant. After
that discovery, Andre began to train
Elijah. It was rigorous and hard, but
Elijah was doggedly determined not to
quit or fail. Andre was impressed by the
boy's determination and watched him
grow. As Elijah matured and grew
stronger, Andre demonstrated more and
more of the Living Force to him. It
seemed that Elijah finally found
somewhere to belong, and shortly after
that, he Awakened. From his Awakening
forward, Elijah's skill and discipline
grew in leaps and bounds.
It was not long before Elijah was
ready to take the tests to determine if he
was ready to become a full Jedi. Elijah
has promised that upon becoming a Jedi,
he will take Alek Ferrel as his padawan
apprentice, thus preserving the Jedi
paradigm.

The Jedi Craft:

The Jedi are technically considered a craft mage organization largely because they
don’t label their magick as magick. While a good portion of the Jedi’s magick is
governed by the use of Tecknology and subject to the same terminology and techniques
used the Void Engineers, half of the Jedi’s magick is spiritual in nature and involves the
use of the Force.
Without knowledge that what they do is actually magick, however, the Jedi don’t
consider themselves mages, as such. They don’t know or use the terms like “spheres” or
“Arete.” Those terms were coined and spread throughout the Traditions by the Order of
Hermes shortly after the formation of the first Council of Nine.
Furthermore, the Jedi don’t limit their membership to mages alone. They see
value in the use of the Force no matter what form it may take. Since the formation of this
new craft, at least two members are non-mages. Aiofe is a very old and powerful Sidhe
Changeling, and there is rumored to be a werewolf member of the Jedi. Besides the
entire Jedi Council itself is made up of dream beings and Maya.

Relationship with the Void Engineers:

The Jedi have never had any ill will towards the Void Engineers. As a matter of
fact, the Void Engineers have proved to be some of the Jedi’s best companions and
friends. Their philosophies are very close. The Void Engineers are explorers at heart,
and have sworn to defend the Earth against the Nephandi. The Jedi see the Nephandi as
beings in service to the Dark Side and are only too happy to render aid to the VE when
threatened by the forces of darkness.
The Void Engineers by the same token have always been friendly with the Jedi.
The Jedi don’t mind sharing their Tecknology, which doesn’t seem to malfunction in the
Umbra as much as the VE teck does, and the VE don’t mind sharing new advancements
with the Jedi. This relationship has mostly been limited to the Umbra and, of course,
might not survive the scrutiny of the other Conventions of the Technocracy back on
Earth. Even that, however, isn’t a sure thing, because the Technocracy’s new blood and
new attitude towards the Traditions.

The Jedi Academy:

The Jedi school is a legitimate Technology Magnet School for children in ages
ranging from Elementary School all the way up to High School level. The computer lab
actually houses the Tecknology allowing travel between Coruscant and the School itself.
Students are rigorously studied before being allowed to “discover” this Tecknology and
make their first journey into the world of the Jedi.
As it stands the formalized techniques for training Jedi are still observed. An
aspiring young Jedi student begins his training with the council and must be chosen at a
certain age to become an actual padawan apprentice. While the Council is open to other
beings with their own powers (which are seen as a “different” study of the Living Force),
students past a certain age who seem less likely to awaken are offered other jobs within
the Jedi order, while not actually becoming Jedi Knights themselves.
Padawan rank includes any mage from who has not reached adept status (they
have only a 1 or 2 in their highest spheres), Adepts are known as Jedi Knights (and have a
3 or 4 in their spheres), and Masters, are of course, Jedi who have taken a padawan
because of their own level of skill.
While the Jedi Council decides the fate of most of the Jedi Order, there are 7
members who aren’t permanent fixtures on the Council (4 of those members serve until
they step down, and 3 of them are elected for specified terms of service). It is believed
that soon members like Andre Morales and Aiofe might have positions on the Council.

The navigations console… the letter, you’ll arrive on one of the

“Those coordinates should take
you straight there. Give me about five
minutes to retract the umbilical arm, and
we can get underway. I’ll fly behind you
in case there’s any kind of trouble,”
Elijah explained to Windless.
Windless nodded. “You know
that’s the Maya Sector, right Jedi?
You’re offering to take us into an
unstable realm where we could be lost
rather easily.”
Elijah nodded. “I know that, and
as long as you follow my instructions to
more stable regions in the Maya Sector.”
Windless looked with doubt at
Nichols, but did not question him when
he nodded. His decisions had saved
their lives, so far, and her earlier outburst
seemed to be something she was not so
eager to repeat.
Elijah gave a friendly nod to
McDaniels and then headed back to his
own ship, via the newly repaired airlock
facility. Nichols assumed he had
withdrawn the umbilical once his ship
switched back over to internal power and
oxygen.
 “All right people, you heard the
weirdo,” Nichols said when the lighting
flickered indicating the power supply
changeover. “We’re going in.”
Everyone took up seats and
buckled in. Nichols watched as
Windless punched in the navigation
coordinates and deftly piloted the ship
towards the location arranged by Elijah.
Within moments, Nichols and his
crew watched as the ship silently glided
into the nebulous space known as the
Maya Sector. Sensors went crazy, and
warning beacons began to blare.
The whole crew was jumpy, and
the further failure of their equipment
only served to heighten their feelings.
Several times the proximity alert and
crash warning alarms went on, and then
off again, without warning.
Nichols let out a breath, watching
the view screen showing their progress.
McDaniels seemed relaxed, but Andrews
was practically pissing himself.
“Goddamit! How are we going
to know if we’re on the right track,
we’ve lost telemetry?” Andrews said,
looking around in panic.
“I’m flying in the right direction,
as long as I stay on course, we should
see the planet soon enough!” Windless
barked back at him.
“Calm down people, we need to
be one hundred percent for this,”
Nichols said through gritted teeth.
And suddenly it was ahead of
them. It was amazing. A planet-city
spiraled out of the misty nebulous realm.
It was enormous, and lights from
buildings all over the planet created
large geometric patterns as they
approached.
Windless piloted the craft
without the aid of computers and
approached the area on the planet she
was told to. Before long, they entered
the atmosphere and swooped down past
thousands of space ships and air taxis.
“My god, are there really this
many people out here that we didn’t
know about?” Nichols said in awe.
“No,” Andrews said quietly.
“I’ve got sensors back up. They’re
aliens—all of them.”
Windless gritted her teeth as she
made the final approach to the landing
platform Elijah had directed them to.
“Shut up…this is tricky.”
Silence reigned on the bridge for
the next few moments. It seemed like
nobody breathed until they heard the
hissing of the hydraulics as the landing
gear touched the surface of the landing
platform.
A few moments later, Elijah’s
own ship landed next to theirs.
Landing ramps were extended,
and they all met one another on the
platform.
As stoic as Elijah seemed,
Nichols could tell he was happy to be
home. Several other Jedi walked down
the long walkway leading from the Jedi
Temple to the landing platform. They
too were recognizable by their simple
tunics and long brown, hooded robes.
The Jedi Temple was amazing. It
stood thousands of meters high, with a
central section and four more towering
spires at regular intervals along the
outside.
Nichols turned to Elijah. “It’s
beautiful, how’d you do it?”
“That’s a question you should
save for my master,” Elijah said with a
smile.
The Jedi finally arrived and
uncovered their hoods. One of them was
Master Mace Windu, which threw
Nichols for a loop, considering it looked
exactly like Samuel L. Jackson. The
other two were unrecognizable. One
was a tall, muscular man with a shaved
head and that same impassive Jedi
expression. The other was an alien. She
was tall, and unnaturally beautiful, with
jade green almond eyes, and pointed
ears.
Elijah turned to the bald man that
wasn’t Sam Jackson and spoke with
affection. “Master Morales, these are
some Void Engineers that were in
trouble nearby. I’ve brought them here
so that their ship can be repaired without
risk of attack. There were hostile alien
forces nearby.”
Morales nodded.
Elijah turned then to Master
Windu and bowed deeply. “Master
Windu,” he said in greeting.
Windu also nodded and turned to
Nichols and his crew.
“I am Master Mace Windu. I
speak for the Jedi Council. It is on
behalf of the Council that I welcome you
to Coruscant and the Jedi Temple.”
Nichols nodded and shook hands
with Windu.
“I’m Thomas Nichols, first
officer of the Void Ship Demeter. Thank
you. This is my crew. Navigator First
Class Windlass, Chief Technician
Andrews, our Communications Officer
Moore, and Marine Seargent McDaniels.
The doctor is still on board.” Nichols
pointed each crewmember out in turn as
he introduced them.
The new Jedi nodded to each
one.
“Mr. Nichols is acting as captain
due to his recent troubles,” Elijah
explained, “I was thinking that he might
be able to open relations with the Void
Engineers through official channels for
us.”
“An excellent thought,
Padawan,” Morales said. “Mr. Nichols,
please join us in the Temple as our
guests. Your crew can get some much
needed rest and refreshments, and as
soon as you are ready, we would be
honored if you would address the Jedi
Council.”
Nichols wasn’t sure how much
more of this he could take. It was
insane, and yet, it was right before him.
All his life, he had been taught to rely on
what his senses told him, but now he
wasn’t sure he could trust those senses.
After all, how could a movie be real?
How could these people be here, and not
in Hollywood like they were supposed to
be? How could this planet even exist?
Elijah must have read the distress
on Nichols’s face, because he put a
reassuring hand on his shoulder. “There
is a rational explanation, Mr. Nichols,
and I’d be happy to give it to you.
However, you need rest, and so does
your crew. Can you not wait until after
you’ve had some time?”
Nichols took a deep breath and
nodded. He relaxed for what seemed
like the first time since the accident.
“All right. But I want to know
everything.”
Elijah and the other Jedi all
smiled.
“We will be happy to tell you
these things,” Morales explained. “We
have nothing to hide.”
The Jedi turned and led the crew
of the Demeter away.
Nichols cast a sidelong glance at
Elijah as they crossed the walkway that
adjoined the platform with a doorway
into the halls of the Temple. “So this is
the same Council from the movies?”
“It sure is,” Elijah said with a
grin. He was obviously enjoying this.
“And they’re amazing to see in person.”
“I’d imagine that’s true,” Nichols
said, chuckling.
The Jedi Council:
The Jedi Council is made up of 12 members. Five of those are permanent, four of
those accept long-term positions that are vacated only when one of those members steps
down from office or dies, and three of them are elected for short-term office. This is the
council as they are described in the Star Wars Episode I Visual Dictionary by David West
Reynolds:

Master Yoda – Well into his 800s, Yoda is the oldest member of the Jedi Council, as well
as its most deeply perceptive Master. A great traveler in his younger years, Yoda
has quietly visited hundred of worlds on his own, spending years learning
different lifeways and appreciating infinitely variable nuances of the Force. His
experiences have made him cautious and reflective. It has been many years since
Yoda has needed to wield his special lightsaber. Yoda takes quiet satisfaction in
finding nonviolent solutions.
Mace Windu – Senior member of the Jedi Council, Mace Windu’s wisdom and self-
sacrifice is legendary. In a long and adventurous career, he has repeatedly risked
his life to resolve great conflicts in fairness to both sides. Windu is sober and
cool-minded but is capable of dramatic actions in the face of danger. Even the
experience Jedi look to this great man in times of serious trouble. Always ready
to risk himself, Mace Windu is very reluctant to risk the lives of others.
Yarael Poof – The attenuated Quermian Yarael Poof is the consummate master of Jedi
mind tricks. He uses Force suggestions to bring conflicts to and abrupt end,
turning combatants’ own fears against themselves.
Saesee Tiin – An Iktotchi pilot, Saesee Tiin is best able to focus while traveling at
extremely high speeds—at the controls of the finest spacecraft. He offers a
unique perspective on the Council as his telepathic mind is always racing ahead to
foresee possibilities.
Ki-Adi-Mundi – A Jedi Knight from the largely unspoiled paradise world of Cerea, Ki-
Adi-Mundi’s high-domed head holds a complex binary brain. Recently added to
the Council, Ki-Adi-Mundi has not yet taken a padawan learner.
Even Piell – Jedi Master Even Piell bears a scar across his eye as a grisly throphy of a
victory against terrorists who made the mistake of underestimating the diminutive
Jedi Master.
Eeth Koth – Iridonian Zabrak such as Eeth Koth are renown for their mental discipline,
which allows them to tolerate great physical suffering. This ability is born of
surviving their harsh homeworld.
Oppo Rancisis – Abdicating his throne on Thisspias, Oppo Rancisis instead sought to
serve the entire galaxy among the Jedi order based on Coruscant. When
negotiations fail, Rancisis ensures that Jedi-counseled military tactics are cunning
and effective.
Deepa Billaba – Adopting the traditional culture of Chalacta to honor her slain parents,
Deepa Billaba offers an ordered perspective to the wide-ranging minds of the
Council.
Adi Gallia – Born into a highly placed diplomatic family stationed on Coruscant, the
intuitive Adi Gallia often seems to know what people are about to say. Gallia has
many contacts throughout the Coruscant political machine, making her one of the
Supreme Chancellor’s most valuable intelligence sources.
Plo Koon – A Kel Dor from Dorin, Plo Koon must protect his sensitive eyes and nostrils
from the oxygen-rich atmosphere of Coruscant with special devices.
Yaddle – Young at only 477, Jedi Master Yaddle looks up to Yoda while leading the
Council with compassion and balanced patience. Yaddle silently waits in
discussions before offering her single, powerful, soft-spoken comment.

RUNNING A JEDI GAME: causing friction, while their oaths to

This part I leave mostly up to the
individual storyteller. Some people
might want to make the Jedi a large part
of their campaign, and others would
rather downplay their involvement.
Some of you will read this and declare
that this kind of character is absolutely
stupid and should not be included in the
gothic-punk world of darkness. I
disagree. I believe that the Jedi Code
and the nature of the sacrifices that Jedi
are often called on to perform in the
name of all that is good, makes for an
excellent tragic-hero. While not the
same kind of anti-hero that vampires or
angry werewolves make, they fit very
well in a mage campaign. I have play
tested these characters in several
different gaming settings and they have
worked out very nicely.
Their existence causes those
around them to question their sanity,
protect and serve the good of the people
cause them to sacrifice everything,
sometimes even their lives. Completely
misunderstood and definitely
unappreciated for their sacrifices, the
way they exist makes for some very
intense and interesting role-playing
situations.
Furthermore, what’s to say a Jedi
can’t fall in love? There was definitely
some unspoken electricity between Qui
Gon and Shmi Skywalker in Episode I,
not to mention the affair between Anakin
and Amidala in Episodes II and III.
How would someone in love with a Jedi
react when they discover that person is
probably crazy and willing to die for
people around them? That person might
not think the sacrifices a Jedi might
endure are worthwhile. Torn between
love for another life-form their sense of
duty, a Jedi’s life can become quite
complex.
There’s nothing to say a Jedi
can’t go over to the Dark Side either.
Some student who isn’t getting it, or
having trouble might easily make a deal
with a Maya or Umbrood for the quick
road to power. And what about those
students that can’t master the Force
enough to be accepted as Jedi? I’m sure
they might want revenge. There’s plenty
of opportunity for some great stories
involving the desire for revenge.
Even an accepted Jedi who has
gone through the training process might
find pangs of empathy for a pathetic
creature that was told he’d never become
a Jedi. It won’t be a stretch for that Jedi
to remember the angst and anxiety over
whether or not they’d be chosen as a
padawan before the deadline was up.
And let’s not forget the most
important part. Jedi don’t have a lot
they can do on earth, unless they’re
actually armed with a Fetish lightsaber.
Without one of those, a Jedi is
hamstrung, risking paradox with each
magick they invoke. While some of
their Tecknologies are considered
coincidental, there are others that are just
too much, even for a Star Wars fan to
believe in. Games can become very
painful reminders that the Technocracy
have won the Ascension War, when a
Jedi is forced to expose himself to the
ravages of paradox for the good of the
people.
As for the school itself? If a
storyteller wishes it to play a large role
in a game, it’s easy enough to make the
school a large place, or even located in a
densely populated area. For campaigns
with lots of Jedi in them, or for all-Jedi
games, have lots of students know about
and use the Tecknology which transports
them to the Temple for Jedi training.
It might be interesting to run a
game in which the players act out the
lives of students trying to juggle their
parents, social lives, and their secret Jedi
training. There’s plenty of angst in
teenage characters to make that kind of
game perfect of the gothic-punk world.
For games that don’t have a large
Jedi presence, just tone everything
down. Have fewer students at the
school, and fewer still actually know
about the connection with the Temple.
Cut the Maya that make the Jedi Council
off from Earth by limiting their powers.
Have the Jedi Council’s ability to
become involved very limited. In the
end, it’s up to you.

The Jedi Code:

The Jedi Code is one of sacrifice and action for the greater good. The Code
encourages Jedi to be introspective and meditative. The virtues of loyalty and integrity
are espoused greatly. Bravery is valued, but fighting for the sake of fighting is not.
Discretion is prized as well.
For the player or storyteller who wishes to get an idea of what the Jedi Code is
really like, I highly suggest that you take a look at the Bushido Code of the samurai of
feudal Japan. Lucas drew heavily from the metaphysics and social structure of the Orient
when he created the Jedi. Even the fact that Jedi are the only ones with lightsabers reflect
strongly on the ideals the samurai had. Samurai were the only ones allowed to carry
swords of any kind. Peasants and normal soldiers were not even allowed to touch a
sword, on pain of death.
 I have seen the Jedi Code printed in two different sources, and it’s different in
both. The first source is West End’s Star Wars the Role Playing Game, and the most
recent is the new Star Wars RPG put out by Wizards of the Coast. I have re-printed them
both for you here, but for the record, I like the second one better, myself. The first one is
vague and understates the idea of Jedi duty that Lucas himself allows to play a large roll
in his films. And while the first one touches on the spiritual factor that weighs heavily in
the idea of Jedi, the second one reflects both their spiritual and physical existence.
So, without further ado, here they are:

Jedi are the guardians of peace in the galaxy.
Jedi use their powers to defend, and protect, never to attack others.
Jedi respect all life, in any form.
Jedi serve others rather than ruling over them, for the good of the galaxy.
Jedi seek to improve themselves through knowledge and training.

After looking at both of those, it’s easy for a clever storyteller to suggest that they
are both pieces of a larger body of work, allowing an enterprising player or storyteller to
create more rules for the Jedi to follow. As a matter of fact, it was strongly suggested in
Episode I (during the argument between Qui Gon and Obi Wan about whether Anakin
should be trained, “You would be on the Council if you’d just follow the Code.”) that Qui
Gon’s refusal to do things commanded by the Council was a way of breaking the Jedi
Code. This suggests that the Code is an ever-changing collection of guidelines
concerning the structure of the Jedi as an organization as well as an outline of the duties
that a Jedi must perform.
A Code that changes as the needs of the Jedi change would seem to reflect their
philosophies greatly; although I’m sure there are some parts of the Code (namely the idea
of justice and peace, etc.) that are indelible.

MAKING A JEDI: Forces are the most popular. For Jedi

A Jedi character is essentially a
techno-Akashic character. Their avatars
are almost always Questing or Dynamic.
Their specialty sphere may be different
depending on who the master is that first
teaches the Jedi student, however Mind,
Life, Dimensional Sciences (note that
Jedi actually use Dimensional Science as
apposed to the Spirit Sphere—see the
Void Engineers book for details), and
who prefer to serve as consulars and
mediators, the Mind and Life spheres are
the most common. For Jedi who
typically train to defend through combat,
Dimensional Science and Forces spheres
are the most common.
At present, there are no real
factions within the Jedi, although if a
storyteller wishes to run an all Jedi game
in which the craft has more than just a
few members, I can think of a few
suggestions. There could easily be
factions that either support or refuse to
condone political relations with the Void
Engineers. There could be factions that
wish to keep the Jedi in space because of
the lack of paradox there, while another
faction might strongly suggest that the
Jedi need to be on Earth amongst the
people they are sworn to protect. While
finally, there may be a faction that
suggests Jedi should all be mages, and
others open to all different kinds of
“aliens.”
Common foci for Jedi include
any kind of Tecknology they might use
to reflect that which is seen in the
movies. For Force-based foci, the Jedi
use meditation, martial arts actions, or
the simple wave of a hand (in the case of
Jedi suggestion. “These are not the
droids you’re looking for…”).
THE JEDI PARADIGM:
If it can’t be done using the
Force or some piece of Tecknology, then
it can’t be done. That’s the easiest way
for a storyteller to look at the Jedi
paradigm. Of course this leaves a lot
open to interpretation. Especially the
question, “What exactly is the Force
capable of?” It’s a legitimate question
and the storyteller will have to tell the
Jedi if they’re trying something that’s
just outside of what is possible with the
Force.
There are those that would argue
that anything is possible through the use
of the Force, but remember, it’s not just
about what a Jedi does, but more about
how the Jedi does it. Paradigm is about
style. Reading a scroll and then
throwing a fireball would be just up a
Hermetic’s alley, while I don’t think
you’d find too many Jedi unlocking the
power of the force thought the use of
True Names. It might be possible for a
Jedi to throw some kind of Force energy
bomb, or even shoot blue lightning from
one’s fingers, but it certainly wouldn’t
look like a fireball.
Bottom line, it’s up to the
storyteller to decide what a Jedi can and
can’t do, what the metaphysics of the
Force are, and where the line is drawn.
It’s easy to stick to the movies as a
guideline, but that’s not much fun.
Mage, as a game, is supposed to be all
about creativity, and limiting your Jedi
players that much is a little unfair,
especially when some creative Hermetic
might be able to pull some neat new
stuff off, while the Jedi is stuck with
what they know.
It’s a thin line, but not too hard
for a storyteller to pull off. For example,
your player wants to throw lightning
around. Let them—if they can roll
enough successes. Plus they have to
expend successes that don’t count
towards the success of the spell in order
to make the lightning actually do
anything. When your Jedi decides to
pick up the Hermetic’s spell book and
try to sling a few spells, have their avatar
manifest and berate them for not doing
things the way they were taught. Or
better yet, just raise the difficulty to a
really high level and watch as the
paradox does your work for you.
In any event, it’s possible to
bring things into the style of the Jedi
without too much work on anyone’s part.
Remember, though, that any mage game
is a cooperative effort between the
storyteller and the players. Try not to
ruin what the storyteller has in store for
you just because you got this neat new
spell that will kill a bad guy two minutes
into the game. Then, things are no fun
for you, or the storyteller.
STEREOTYPES:
Akashic Brothers: The Brotherhood would probably truly appreciate what the
Jedi represent if they ever took the time to get to know us. Usually they’re all too willing
to label us as Marauders and try to kill us. Or perhaps that’s all just a noble way to hide
the fact that they’re still angry with us for knowing Do.
Celestial Chorus: These priests are underestimated and definitely not
appreciated for what they do. They are usually the first to create enemies because of their
willingness to help others. Most traditions see them as week and preachy, but we see
them for what they truly are: fellow warriors against the Darkness.
Cult of Ecstasy: The actual tenants that their organization is based on are fairly
sound. They have roots in common with the shamanic Dreamspeakers. Too bad that
most of them joined because it’s an excuse to give in to one’s baser desires. Desire
without discipline is dangerous, and can consume one whole.
Dreamspeakers: We’ve come across these shamans in our travels. Apparently
they have ways of traversing great distances in space without the need of a craft or a
protective suit. They know a great deal about the land of Maya, when you find one
willing to talk, listen.
Euthanatos: Who died and made these idiots gods of men? Only fate has the
right to decide when it’s a person’s time to die. They go around with their self-righteous
ideology just to hide the fact that they’re murderers, plain and simple. This reeks of the
Dark Side.
Order of Hermes: These fellows are rigid in their hierarchy and don’t like
anyone who thinks they have a better idea of how to do things. They hate us. Treat them
with respect, but avoid confrontations with them if possible.
Sons of Ether: These mages are a little off, but they are always willing to help
the Jedi. Some of them even base their magicks very closely to the same paradigm we
do. If you can deal with the Dr. Frankensteins, there are other’s that have starships and
lightsabers just like we do.
Verbena: These mages respect life as much as we do. They’re likely to be afraid
of us, but they deserve our help when they need it.
Virtual Adepts: Computer geeks turned mages. Who’d have thought? I don’t
suppose that we can speak too much ill of them, however, because we’re Star Wars geeks
turned mages.
Hollow Ones: These lost souls would rather wallow in their selfish lives than
actually do anything to help others. They’re full of drama if you ask, but they overstate
their problems and will try to suck you into their imagined suffering. Treat them with
respect, but gently point out to when they’re going overboard. Involve yourself in
helping others around them; guide them by actions, when possible.
The Technocracy in general: They don’t bother us and we don’t bother them.
When we do get their attention, it’s usually because they think we’re crazy. They’re
rallied against the Nephandi just as much as we are, so help them when they face off with
that evil. Otherwise, it’s best to avoid them.
Void Engineers: We’re trying to open relations with them. We travel in the same
space they do, and they seem to truly need our help. Our encounters with them have been
nothing but good, so far. And they are genuinely prepared to die, protecting Earth from
the hordes of the Dark Side. In that respect, they are as noble as the Celestial Chorus.

The Akashic Connection:

The Jedi got their original member from the ranks of the Akashics, and he has had
no problem passing on his knowledge in Do and the Akashic philosophy to his students
and other Jedi. For the most part, the Akasics don’t really know about the Jedi, but one
can bet that they would not be happy to discover that their Tradition secrets are in the
hands of people who appear to be crazy.

In the guest quarters of the Jedi
Temple…
Nichols woke with a start. There
was a quiet tap on his door.
“Enter,” Nichols said, without
thought. He was used to Void Engineer
Tecknology responding to permission
being granted for another person to
enter. Usually the doors would open
automatically.
After a moment, they did open,
and Windless stepped into the room,
bearing a tray full of fresh fruit.
“I brought you some of the
leftovers from my room. They have so
much stuff here.”
For a moment Nichols was
confused as to where “here” was, but he
quickly remembered.
“Christ, Windless, what have we
gotten into?”
“Actually, Sir,” Windless said
with a smile. “I also brought Elijah to
explain what’s going on here.”
“Good, it’s about damned time.”
As if on command, Burk stepped
into the room and smiled pleasantly at
Nichols.
“Captain Nichols,” he said by
way of greeting, “It’s good to see that
you’ve rested. You seemed very
exhausted.”
“Okay, Marauder, let’s hear it.”
Burk sighed, shaking his head.
“I’m not a Marauder, Captain Nichols.
You’re in a realm of dreams right now.
Millions of screaming Star Wars fans
give rise to the creatures who exist on
this planet. Some of us…how would
you say…I believe ‘enlightened’ would
be your word for it….some of us
enlightened beings take advantage of
what we can learn here. If you’re afraid
I’m a Marauder, let me put your mind to
rest. A Marauder wouldn’t be able to tell
the difference from the reality of this
place, and the story of Star Wars. I can.”
“So, what you’re saying is that
you’re not really a Jedi at all, are you?”
“I’m not identical to the Jedi in
the movies, no. But I can do most
everything they can, and I’ve sworn to
uphold the Jedi Code. I study the use of
the lightsaber like they do, and I am
quite good at it. You should ask Mr.
McDaniels.”
“I’ve heard. But basically, from
what you’ve said, that makes you and
your teacher are wanna-bes?”
Elijah cleared his throat. “I
believe that a wanna-be is more like
what I used to be.”
“And what’s that?”
“I used to be the pimply kid who
didn’t have any friends at school,
because rather than playing cowboys and
Indians with the other children, I brought
all my Star Wars action figures and
wouldn’t share them.”
Nichols laughed. “You’re still
not technically a Jedi.”
 Elijah smiled politely and offered
another explanation, “There are those
out there who believe that this is
technically called the spirit-world. Does
that mean you’re not technically an
astronaut, but rather a shaman? You
know as well as I do, Captain Nichols,
that belief is more than half of reality. I
believe I am a Jedi, and therefore, I can
do what Jedi do.”
Nichols nodded in acceptance of
that definition. “I won’t call you a
wanna-be, if you promise not to ever,
ever call me a shaman again.”
Burk laughed, and held out his
hand. “Deal.”
“So what’s with the Jedi Council
wanting to make a deal with the Void
Engineers? I mean, they’re nothing but
shadows of people’s beliefs.”
“Your ships, my lightsaber…all
of that is just a shadow of a greater

belief. No, the Jedi Council is as real as
people believe they are. You’re going to
have a hard time convincing all the Star
Wars fans of the world that they’re
wrong. But to answer your original
question of ‘why,’ I thought the reason
would be obvious.”
Nichols raised an eyebrow
questioningly, “How so?”
“Your Tecknology is failing, and
you are in need of help. You fight the
Nephandi and other creatures of the
Dark Side, and we support you in that
endeavor. We have much to offer one
another, Mr. Nichols. The Jedi may be
small, but we are growing, and willing to
help.”
Nichols nodded again. “Fair
enough. So let’s go meet the Council.”
Elijah smiled. “Follow me then,
Mr. Nichols,” he instructed.

Background: Andre grew up in Boston, Mass., spending most of his youth studying
from a martial artist there. The martial artist, Dr. Yang Jwing-Ming is well known for
using allegory to Star Wars and the Force in particular in order to illustrate the spiritual
side of Chinese Martial Arts. During his lectures, he would often substitute "the Force"
into a sentence where the idea of Chi is discussed. When speaking of the Ancient
Masters of Chinese martial arts, Master Yang would often use the term Yoda.
Andre devoted most of his life around the study of Tai Chi and Kung Fu. His
discipline was exemplary, and he quickly rose through the ranks of Master Yang's school.
Andre tailored every aspect of his mundane life so that he could spend more and more
time training. He forewent spending time with women, and even got a job working for
Dr. Yang so that he could stay at the studio. It was not long before Andre was an assistant
instructor there. Dr. Yang even had a nickname for Andre, calling him "Young Jedi."
But soon, even that was not enough. Without even really understanding why,
Andre found himself driven to strive for a level of excellence that even Master Yang did
not demand. The rigors that he put himself through paled in comparison to those that
even the Shaolin Monks are required to practice. And one day, something inside Andre
broke, and he awakened to Magick.
At one point, Andre would have easily slid into place amongst the rank and file of
the Akashic Brotherhood. In fact, he has been adopted into that tradition despite some
obvious paradigm differences. Andre was something different than his other Akashic
Brothers. Rather than using words like Magick and Rotes, Andre used terms like the
Living Force and Jedi Tricks.
Some say Andre was more than a little touched. Others say he was just obsessed.
Either way, he meticulously fleshed out his new paradigm based entirely on the Star Wars
movies, books, and comics. Ever driven towards the realization of his dream, Andre set
out to construct a Jedi temple, breaking all ties with Dr. Yang and his classes.
Image: Andre is a very muscular, dark skinned individual. His head is shaved, and he
tends to wear respectable clothes. The only odd thing about him is that he carries what
looks like a replica of a lightsaber from the Star Wars movies attached to his belt. Lately,
however he has taken to wearing the more traditional robes and simple tunic of a Jedi.
Roleplaying Notes: Be calm in everything you do. You’ve already been mentor,
teacher, and father figure, even in your short life, so you believe that you’ve seen it all.
There’s not much else that will surprise you. Don’t talk unless you need to, wasted words
seem silly to you. But don’t allow the fact that you are slow to anger be an excuse for
inaction. If something needs your attention, jump to it. If someone needs to be defended,
it’s your duty, and you are glad to help.

Background: Elijah was born into a middle class home, and grew up the nerd of his
neighborhood, and later, the nerd of his school. As time went on, he discovered Star
Wars and fell in love with the ideals that were created by Lucas in those films.
He never really liked the school he belonged to, or the people in it, so when he
was invited to go to a new school that specialized in computer technology and other high-
tech studies, he said, “What the heck?”
 His new school was only slightly better than the old one, and he quickly reverted
to his loner ways, until late one night, after a dream about Jedi, he wandered into the
computer lab (the dormitories and the school building are in the same place). There in
the computer lab, he discovered all kinds of computer equipment that he’d never seen
before. That took a lot, because Elijah thought he had seen it all.
After hooking everything up, he decided to test it to see what it did. Moments
later, Elijah found himself standing before the Jedi Council and being invited to study to
become a Jedi. It wasn’t until much later, under the tutelage of Andre Morales, that he
finally came to understand the true nature of the Maya and the Jedi Council.
By then, however, it didn’t matter to Elijah. It was real, and he finally had a
chance to be the guy he’d always wanted to. No more social awkwardness and naivety.
Now he was a Jedi.
Image: Elijah has dark hair and a nice smile. While he was the pimply nerd a long time
ago, he’s grown since he became a Jedi and is fairly handsome now. Although not as
muscular as Andre, Elijah is in good shape and likes the fact that he isn’t the wiry geek he
once was.
Roleplaying Notes: You try to emulate your Master in lots of things, but can’t always
seem to find the same calm center he can. You know that you are handsome now, where
you were once a nerd, and you like the attention it gets. Finally being the Jedi you
always wanted to be, however, may prove to be your downfall, as you are very proud of
your accomplishments. Hubris is not far off in your future, unless something gives you a
“reality check.”

Background: Alek was born in Russia, but raised on the Cop like any good Void
Engineer. Exploration became his life, flying his pride. Alek quickly developed a
reputation for being a reckless flight jockey and a ladies man, amongst his peers. Oh, he
was good at what he did, all right, but he was a statistical nightmare that not many
commanding officers were willing to deal with.
That all changed when he almost died and was rescued by the Jedi. At first,
traveling with the Jedi was fun. He could fly and do what he wanted. He even tried to
turn the Jedi into Void Engineers for a while, but that got boring.
Eventually, when he was given the opportunity to help build ships that wouldn’t
malfunction like the Void ships had been lately. A dream come true, Alek jumped at the
opportunity, even when it meant being grounded at the Jedi Temple for a while. It was
during his time at the temple that he decided to give the whole Jedi thing a try.
Image: Alek has the look and charisma of a pilot. He attracts people to him, but they
don’t always like what they’re attracted to. He has just a trace of his old Russian accent.
Roleplaying Notes: You try to live like a Jedi, you really do. But sometimes that’s just
too boring, and you need to take a break. The one good thing you can say about having
started to study what it means to be a Jedi is that you get sent on all kinds of dangerous
missions, and you usually get to fly. Ahhhh…there’s nothing better than flying—except
maybe for women. Ahhhh…there’s nothing better than flying with women…

Background: Little is known about Aiofe other than the fact that she is some kind of
elfin creature. She is a knight, having been awarded that title by a lord who has since
passed away. She has since sworn to uphold the Jedi Code, and cannot break that law
due to something she calls Glamour.
Image: Aiofe is tall and beautifully muscular. She wears ragged clothes and armor from
her long travels, and she prefers to carry a normal sword to a lightsaber, however, for
missions where she must look the part of a Jedi, she differs to the more rigid Jedi dress
code. Her hair is shaved into a tall red Mohawk, and she has tribal tattoos inscribed on
the sides of her head.
Roleplaying Notes: These Jedi people are neat. They’re full of glamour, and they don’t
even know it. Every one of them can be a dreamer for you, and all you have to do is
uphold their code of knighthood, swearing fealty to this Jedi Council. That’s easy
enough…for now. You haven’t had an opportunity to explore your Unseelie side while
you’re sworn into knighthood, because of some of the things that the Jedi Code says, but
hopefully soon, you’ll be given a reprieve from your lords and will have a chance to
wreak some havoc.

Background: You spent your whole life being the person that everyone comes to for
advice. Sometimes it was neat with so many people depending on you, but sometimes it
was infuriating when they wouldn’t listen to your advice.
 When you got to be high-school age, your parents whisked you off to a new
school for people with technical talents. For some reason, they seemed to think you had
some. You didn’t really mind, because the school had a nice atmosphere and there was
something special about the people who went there.
One day in computer lab, however, things got weird. You received a message on
your computer screen during class. The message was filled with instructions on how to
set up and operate some equipment that was usually kept in a storage closet. You were
pretty sure at the time that the equipment in question was only for staff usage, but you
figured, what the heck? You only live once, right? So, you waited until after school and
wandered into the computer lab where you began to hook the equipment up. When you
activated it, you discovered yourself in another place and another time.
At first you thought you might be crazy, but training as a Jedi has become part of
your normal life. You’ve just been taken as a padawan only recently, but Yoda says you
have a knack for helping people, so they’re focusing your studies in the direction of being
a consular and mediator.
Image: Your eyes are always alert, looking for the nuances in the conversations around
you, and you study people constantly. You like to dress down, and look casual, in an
attempt to put others around you at ease. And if that doesn’t work, there’s always your
warm, friendly smile.
Roleplaying Notes: People trust you, and you have a way of understanding them. You
always watch people around you and study their reasons for everything they do. Always
alert to the subtleties in life, it’s no wonder they want you to be a consular. Besides, you
have always had a non-confrontational manner that has kept you out of fights. You do,
however, have trouble and often lose your temper when people ask for your advice ant
then refuse to take it. Those situations always end up disastrous in their conclusion, and
they always come crying back to you.

Background: All you’re life, you’ve looked out for the little guy. When you were four
and your parents put you in martial arts classes, you took it to heart, living by the rules
they set for you. Even when you had that fight with your little sister and she was kicking
your ass, you never lifted a hand against her, because you were taught that you never
used the martial arts unless absolutely necessary.
Unfortunately, as you grew older, that got you into fights in school, protecting the
guys that the bullies would pick on. Your parents weren’t happy with the results of your
fighting. After all regular detentions and suspensions weren’t fun, but you know that
deep down they are proud of you for protecting those that were weaker than you.
Knowing that they are proud made you all the more determined.
Recently you got an invitation to this school, and your parents jumped at the
opportunity to send you off there. This way, you had a clean slate. Ever since you
arrived you had some weird dreams about Star Wars, which is okay, because you think
Jedi are pretty cool. But those dreams are getting weirder.
The really weird part didn’t happen until this guy showed up and told you that
you could use the Force. It seems crazy, but he was right. Now he’s taken you as his
apprentice and is teaching you how to really put your talent for defending the innocent to
good use.
Roleplaying Notes: It’s hard to make you angry, but when people do, you don’t mind
unleashing on them. The one thing you hate in life is to see people picking on weaker
people. After all, you’re people, for Christ’s sake, not animals. Only animals prey on
their weak. These people should be able to figure out that we’ve grown past that as a
species. Oh well, if they don’t know it yet, you’ll be sure they do as soon as they meet
you.

Background: You were raised in deep space. It’s what you know. Your parents died
when you were pretty young, and the next thing you knew, you were signing up to

Life on the Cop was boring, and deep space has always felt like home for you.
You’re not sure if you did something really good or really bad, because the new job you
just pulled is insane! There are these mages hiding somewhere in the Maya Sector of
space and they think they’re Jedi. Yeah, just like in the movies.
 Anyway, they’ve asked to be the Void Engineers friends, and you were sent over
there as a sign of good will. Not that you mind, because once you saw what they could
do, you thought it was really cool. And since the boss said that you have to find out
everything you can from them, you’ve been going to their Jedi training classes.
You’ll have to make a decision about how serious you are soon, however, because
Yoda says that it’ll be time for you to be picked as an apprentice to a Jedi Master in a few
months. Once that happens, there’s no turning back, you’ll have to start calling yourself a
Jedi.
Image: You have a mischievous smile and a twinkle in your eye. You tend to wear your
coveralls from back when you were a real Void Engineer, but more and more, you can be
seen wearing the same gear that the other Jedi wear.
Roleplaying Notes: You love to fly, and you like getting into trouble eve more. It’s fun.
The Jedi don’t truck with you bringing trouble to their doorstep, but as long as you pay
lip service to their Code, they don’t jump on your back. That might all change when you
become an apprentice, but who knows, you might like the change. You’ll definitely
welcome the chance for adventure.

Background: You discovered you were a toll when you were still a childling. And since
then, your eyes were opened up to the world of the Dreaming. You spent your youth with
a motley that took care of you. One of the troll grumps was kinda your hero. He had
been given the honor of swearing fealty to the local lord and becoming a knight.
You worked your butt off as a child to impress the Duke, but to no avail.
Eventually even your motley ditched you because you were obsessed with the nobles far
too much for their taste. But it wasn’t like that at all, and you didn’t have the words to
explain it to them. You just wanted to be a knight.
When the opportunity arose to become a knight, it was not what you expected.
You found a lost trod one day, and went exploring it, for lack of something better to do.
It lead straight into the dreaming, and to your amazement and surprise, it led to a planet
full of Jedi.
Without missing a beat, you swore your fealty to the Jedi and the Sidhe lady that
served them. Now you’re a knight like you’ve always wanted to be. So what if you’re
not a knight for some fae lord. At least this way, you get to do some real good.
Image: When you’re on the planet of the Jedi, you look like a normal troll: large blue
and covered in horns and white hair. The Jedi call you an alien, but you don’t mind
because they respect you all the same, and treat you like a knight should be treated. For
now, you’re technically a squire, but they expect so much more of you than a fae knight
would of their squire. So your mind leaps with glee, every time you imagine what it must
be like to be a full Jedi Knight.
Roleplaying Notes: You’re gruff, but not rude. You love the people you’re with now,
but hesitate to be openly emotional. At least they respect that. And at least they don’t
demand that you pay attention to all those stupid courtly rules. Otherwise, being a squire
or padawan is just what you’ve always wanted.
Quote: “Listen mister, you don’t know me yet, but let me assure you of this: you don’t
want to know me. So let’s settle this nicely and I’ll go away before I’m forced to
introduce myself.”

The Force:
The Force is the term the Jedi use for Quintessence, but technically it’s more than
that. Being attuned to the Force means that you understand the subtleties of it. In
essence, being attuned to the Force means you have to know how to read resonance. Jedi
are particularly susceptible to Jhor due to their paradigm, and even worse, Jedi who
become bored with the training necessary to become true Knights might succumb to their
Jhor and make a move to gain more power through deals with Umbrood or Nephandi.
Needless to say, this is called, “going to the Dark Side.”
Luckily for the Jedi, they haven’t found any Sith yet, and Andre hopes that the
Sith will only turn out to be other Maya, hidden somewhere within the dreams of Star
Wars fans. It doesn’t always work that way, however, and the more students he begins to
teach, the more likely the resonance will seek to balance itself. There is a definite lack of
Jhor amongst the Jedi, but who knows what the future will bring.
The Jedi and Do:
Andre Morales learned the basic tenants of Do without even knowing it, and
before he even awakened. Master Yang’s school is actually a front for Akashic
recruitment, and an ample amount of the precepts of the Akashic way of life are sprinkled
throughout the school. So, having spent most of his life at the school, Andre found that
Do came very easily to him when he finally did awaken.
Mastering Do was only a matter of time, and he left the Akashics having gained
that mastery. Unfortunately for Andre, Do is a closely guarded secret of the brothers, and
they wouldn’t be very happy with the technocratic direction he’s taken it in. For now,
they’ve had little say, however, who knows what the future might bring?

EPILOGUE: showing a rare smile. “I am proud of

At the Jedi Temple…
The past three days had seen
some of the strangest things that Nichols
had ever encountered in his entire career.
He didn’t think that that odd things that
lived in Deep Space would ever cease to
amaze him, and this was no exception.
He stood at the landing platform
while Andre Morales spoke briefly with
Elijah Burk and another man, Alek
Ferrel. They were about to leave, and it
appeared that Nichols would be taking
Elijah, and Alek with him.
Nichols had met with the great
council the day before, and they had
been very polite in asking that political
relations be developed between the Void
Engineers and the Jedi.
Nichols had assured them that he
didn’t have the power or the authority to
make that kind of decision. He did,
however, have the power to take Elijah
and Alek back with him, as ambassadors.
In order to perform this task,
Elijah was made a full Jedi, and he took
Alek as his padawan. Alek, as Nichols
learned, was the only survivor of a Void
Engineer ship that crashed several years
ago. He had been presumed dead, but
was recovering under the care of the
Jedi.
“Good luck, Elijah. You will
make a fine Jedi Knight,” Andre said,
you.”
Elijah beamed. “Thank you,
Master.” With that, Elijah turned to
Nichols. “Are we ready to get
underway, Sir?”
Nichols nodded.
“Good luck Captain Nichols,”
Andre said, stepping forward to shake
hands with him.
Nichols shook his hand and
smiled. “Thank you for the repairs and
the help that you’ve offered. I’m sure
that will go a long way with the Void
Engineers, and it’s definitely insurance
that relations will get off on the right
foot.”
Andre nodded. “We have a lot in
common, you and I.”
It was Nichols’s turn to nod. “I
believe you’re right.”
“Good luck on your journey,
Captain Nichols. And, may the Force be
with you.”
As cheesy as that had always
sounded in the movies, Nichols found
himself happy that Andre had said it.
