Listen carefully and fill in the blanks with the missing words; besides, underline the unknown
words, and try to guess their meaning.

VISITING MEDELLIN

Hello! I’m Frank. I live in a very nice region of Colombia, its name is Antioquia, it’s like a state, but in
Colombia we don’t have states, we have departments; what means, I live in the Department of Antioquia.
I’m Colombian, but people from our department are often called “Paisas”; what means I’m totally Paisa,
and I’m proud of it.
In Antioquia, there are many beautiful places, towns, and cities that you can visit, beginning with the
capital city, Medellin. Medellin is full of friendly people everywhere. There are a lot of shopping malls
and touristic places.
If you like culture, concerts, and have fun, you can come to Medellin in August, because there is a week
in which Medellin has a lot of events around the city. The popular name of that event in the city is “La
feria de las flores”. In “La feria de las flores” you can go to a lot of musical shows, you can go to the
cavalcade, in which you can find a lot of beautiful women and horses of all types, sizes, and colors. You
can also see the parade of “Silleteros” which is a Paisa word used to refer to those people who have a
“silleta” on their backs with hundreds of flowers making different pictures with them. A “silleta” is
something like a flat table or a flat board with styrofoam on it, where all the flowers are introduced to
represent something.
If you like flowers and nature, you can go to the Botanical Garden. In there, you can find hundreds of
different flowers, besides there is a nice space for relaxing and breathing fresh air. If you like excitement,
you can go the North Park; it’s an amusement park next to the Botanical garden with many attractions
and games for children and adults. If you like arts, you can visit Botero’s Museum; in there, you can find
a lot of works of art of him and many others from other people.
If you want to go around the city, you can do it just by getting into the metro system. Metro system
includes many different transportation vehicles, like: buses, metro, and cable cars. The cable car is a
small cabin which goes from one station to another hanging by a cable on the air, sometimes the cabins
reach 50 meters high or even more. If you’re afraid of heights, you don’t have to go there, you can stay
in one of the stations and wait for your friends, while they go up to the cable car.
As many tourists come to Medellin, the government implemented a transportation mean for tourists,
it’s called “Turi- Bus”. Turi – bus takes you around the city in a bus, and many other touristic places.
There’s a guide on board showing you and explaining to you the most interesting places in our city.
As you can see, there are a lot things to do in Medellin, but there are even more things to do and to
see in all those beautiful towns that Medellin, Antioquia, and Colombia have.
Come on and visit us!
