REPORT ON ENTREPRENEURSHIP TALK BY DATO’ Ir Hj AHMAD MURAD

On 8 November 2016, all first year students that take the Introduction to Mechanical
Engineering course attend a talk on entrepreneurship organized by Faculty of Mechanical
Engineering at the Dewan Tun Rahah, Kolej Tun Razak. The talk is presented by Dato’ Ir Hj
Ahmad Murad that begin at 2:00 pm and finish at 4:30 pm. First of all, he introduce about
himself to us and share his experience as a bachelor student at UTM under mechanical
engineering program. He also share to us about his working experience as entrepreneur. After
that, he also share to us about a few people who are excellent as entrepreneur and their life
principle to be successful in their business such as Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary, Tony Fernandes,
Jack Francis Welch and so on. Next, he talk about entrepreneur which is a person that identify
opportunity and pursue it relentlessly, allocate resources and create value. He also add some
points about entrepreneur which is someone who organizes, and assumes the risks of a
business or enterprise. He defined entrepreneurship as process of discovering new ways of
combining resources. He also put five major component that need to consider by the
entrepreneur which are planning, organizing, opportunities, assuming and risk. Besides that,
he talk a story about John Macekey, a person who had a company in selling organic foods and
successful in his business. On the other hand, he also give us some tips on building a business
which are competitive edge, challenging times, time is of the essence and elements
contributing successful business. Then, he also talk about leadership which are factor of
leadership, leadership style, principle of leadership and so on. He also deliver the definition
of the vision and mission and give us advice to have our own vision and mission. Thus, he said
as entrepreneur we need to design a marketing plan, focus on marketing principles, create a
perfect sales process and create a customer experiences. After that, he talk a story about
Hewlett Packard which started a business at the garage as engineer to design the urinal and
in 1996 their business changed to computer business known as HP. Furthermore, he talk
about engineering contribution to society ethical practice, engineering responsibility and the
role of professional engineers in sustainability. Finally, he finish the talk with some advices
which is wherever you are always aim high.
