Reflection Essay

Hey there Abbey!!

This is you...from the future! I am writing to you in hopes to impart some wisdom

and comfort upon you. Right now I am a senior in high school. I know you’re at a scary

point in your life. You’re about to start your first year of high school and you don’t know

many people. All of your closest friends from North Star all chose to go to Riverton and

for some odd reason you’re going to Herriman. This will be the first time that you and

your best friend won’t be going to the same school. You won’t see her everyday in the

hallway, you won’t be able to be on the same school sports teams, and obviously you

won’t even be in the same classes. This is going to be a big change for you. I know

you’re scared and nervous for what is to come, but don’t fret! You’re only scared

because this is a new experience. So before you psych yourself out, allow me to share

experiences you will go through that will change who you currently are into the person

you’ll become.

I know you may be thinking that it’s all easier said than done, but allow me to

elaborate. I am aware you are about to start your first year of high school. The only few

people you know that are going to Herriman High School are teenagers from your

previous wards and the girls you play with on the high school soccer team. Many

thoughts of doubt and panic flood your head. You wonder if you’ll even see any of your

friends during school. Who will you sit by at lunch, or talk to in your classes? Fear

officially sets in. It’s scary. I know. However, trust me when I say that you are going to

be just fine. You will meet so many different people on your first few days. With your

genuine personality and welcoming smile, you will draw people towards you. People will

want to be your friend because of your desire to be a good friend to others. Just

remember to be happy and friendly with everyone and you will make friends in every

class. You may still be thinking about your plans for lunch. Within the first two weeks of

school you will meet someone at lunch you never thought you would become friends

with. Remember that one soccer practice years ago when this random kid showed up

afterward and everyone ran over to worship him like a God? They claimed he was the

greatest soccer player ever, but you were not amused nor impressed. Well throughout

your years of highschool he will become one of your closest friends and you will make

memories with him that you’ll cherish forever. By your senior year both you and him will

become disco skating pros. An uncommon hobby you never thought you would enjoy as

a child, will become your favorite weekend enterprise. There is nothing more exciting

than walking into that smoke filled elliptic room, hearing that same ear piercing siren;

the kick off to every disco night. The warm welcoming smell of maple donuts wafts

through the air. Something in that magical fog they spray everywhere makes it smell so

delicious. It is at this wonderful location where many other friendships will sprout.

Making friends should be the least of your worries. Just be who you are and the right

people will appreciate your genuineness. You will make everlasting unprecedented

friendships.

Along with friends, sports are a very significant part of your life, soccer

specifically. Not only will you play on a club soccer team, but on top of that, you’ll play

on both the high school soccer and basketball teams. You will learn important life

lessons through these sports, the most influential of which will occur at the start of your

junior year. You’ll make the high school soccer team for the third time. Another

successful season awaits and you’re eager to get started! As the days go by, the

coaches will give instruction as to how they want your position to be played, but you

won’t necessarily agree with them or understand what they expect of you. You’ll ask

many insightful questions to further understand your role on the team and share some

ideas you have from which you have learned from your club coach, Ivan. The coaches

will be offended by your intelligence resulting into less playing time. They’ll try to answer

your question with a simple generic statement and then follow it with a completely

different, confusing, and contradicting statement that just confuses you more.

Frustration will take over like a raging storm and your confidence will slump to the

lowest of the lows. After reading about this situation, you may want to keep your ideas

to yourself, but don’t! Share them! As you struggle through the season you’ll come to a

realization that only you have control over what you do and how you react to things.

Such an epiphany will spark positivity in your eyes which will be the most beneficial

asset to you in your life; it will be an aid to you as you work to rebuild your confidence.

Looking at that season from hindsight I am grateful I was given that dilemma in my life

because of how it affected me. No matter what comes your way, remember to always

stay positive and believe in yourself! You only have control over your own actions; do

not let other people take away your happiness! You are a remarkable athlete and your

hard work will pay off. Don’t worry about the degrading comments the coaches make

about you and ignore their ignorant actions. The amount of playing time you are given

does not define you as an athlete or as a person. Just remain confident in yourself and

play every minute as if it were your last. When you find yourself playing with this

attitude, your performance will improve as will your happiness. You will reach the point

where your positive attitude will infect your teammates and help them regain their

confidence as well. All in all, you turn out to be a strong athlete and an inspiring

teammate. Don’t worry about the irrelevant actions of those around you, as long as you

continually work hard and play your best you will turn out better than you imagined.

As you go through your years in high school you’ll learn that there are greater

things to worry about than people’s opinions and actions towards you. There will always

be surrounding negativity, but you can’t let it restrict you from becoming the supreme

version of yourself. Life is better when you’re happy; don’t let the minor insignificancies

stop you from enjoying the world around you.

Sincerely, You (;
