MODULE 1: Introduction to TEYL Reflection

MOOC CAMP UPPER ANTIPOLO

NAME: LORRINE C. GARCIA COURSE: TEACHING ENGLISH TO YOUNG LEARNER

Module 1 gave a thorough discussion on the characters of young learners as well

as on how do they learn foreign language. I learned that a teacher can be a successful
facilitator of learning if he/she has given time to fully know and understand his/her
learners. We have to acknowledge the fact that all learners have differences and they all
learn in different pace depending on their learning styles. Therefore, one strategy does
not fit all learners. Moreover, I also learned the importance of repetition over
grammatical explanations in learning foreign language. Exposing our learners through
the use of songs, story, etc. can be used to make the approach more learning-centered
instead of creating a passive atmosphere inside the classroom.

Module 2 presented one of the most important element in teaching that every teacher
has been failing and continuously working – Classroom Management. I am so glad to
know process of involving our learners to different classroom routines. At first, I thought
classroom management was just about making the class organized. However, upon
learning all the topics and articles in this module, I have learned that teaching and
learning process should also be incorporated.

Module 4 talked about the teaching of listening and speaking. In my opinion,

among all the 4 macro skills, these two are the critical areas that every learner,
regardless of the age, must learn. Most of my students have challenges in terms of
listening and speaking skills which I think serve as barriers to fully hone themselves in
these fields. However, upon reading the articles, I have learned various activities from
the module that would gain their interest to learn on how to speak the language and
listen critically.

Teaching reading and writing is the emphasis of Module 4. Based on my

experience as a teacher, Reading and Writing are crucial skills that are really
challenging to impart, especially if the learners or even the teacher does not love
reading. These two go hand-in-hand. Upon reading all the articles, I have learned
various strategies that will engage my learners in taking time to read.

Designing the lesson plan is the emphasis of Module 5. On this module, I have
learned the beauty of presenting our lesson in a thematic approach. I love the way how
lessons in a thematic unit follows a certain theme and the integration of English lessons
in each lesson per day. This is a reminder that we can teach valuing at the same time
imparting our content to young learners.
