1. A 4-kW resistance heater wire with thermal conductivity of k = 15 W/m · °C, a diameter
of D= 8 mm, and a length of L= 0.7 m is used to boil water. The optimum temperature
difference between heater and water is 10 for better boiling characteristics process so the
outer surface temperature of the resistance wire is aimed to be Ts =110°C,

Required

i. Select a proper PDE that describe the problem

ii. Show the boundary conditions
iii. Using Hand Calculation find the temperature distribution in the wire diameter and plot
on excel
iv. Simulate the case via ANSYS thermal analysis or any software you master.
v. Plot ANSYS results on the hand calculated one to validate your simulation predictions.

2. Consider a 1.2-m-high and 2-m-wide double-pane window consisting of two 3-mm-thick

layers of glass (k = 0.78 W/m °C) separated by a 12-mm-wide stagnant air space (k = 0.026
W/m · °C). the room is maintained at 24°C while the temperature of the outdoors is =5°C.
Take the convection heat transfer coefficients on the inner and outer surfaces of the window
to be h1 =10 W/m2 · °C and h2 =25 W/m2 · °C.

Required

Determine the steady rate of heat transfer flux through this double-pane window and the
temperature of its inner surface
i. Hand calculations.
ii. ANSYS Simulation.

with desired fixed temperature = 100 C , Assume the end of the rod is perfectly insulated

Plot the Temperature distribution along the centroid of the fin assuming convective heat
transfer coefficient of environment h=7 w/m2*k and Surrounding temperature Te=30 C

Solve the problem for Both metals

1. Copper with thermal conductivity k = 330 w/mk

2. Steel with thermal conductivity k= 49 w/mk
