ME 314 Exam I
(100 pts., 1 hr. 15 mins. – Open Book )
1. Make assumptions as necessary and list these clearly.
2. Show all intermediate steps in calculations and units clearly.
3. Clear sketches are needed for all problems.
4. Use of calculators permitted.

1. 0.8-m-high and 1.5 m wide double-pane window consisting of two 4 mm thick layer
of glass (k = 0.78 W/m  K) separated by a 10 mm wide stagnant air space (k =
0.026 W/m  K). The temperature inside the room is maintained at 25 C while the
temperature of the outdoor is -5C. The convection heat transfer coefficients on the
inner and outer surfaces of the window are h1 = 10 W/m 2K and h2 = 40 W/m 2K,
which includes the effect of radiation.
(A) (5) Draw the thermal circuit for the heat transfer from the indoor to the outdoor.
(B) (10) Calculate each thermal resistance and the total thermal resistance.
(C) (10)Determine the steady rate of heat transfer through this double pane window.
(D) (10)Find the inner surface temperature (Ts,i ) of the window.

2. A turbine blade is the critical part of the turbine engine which directly determines the
turbine working temperature, power and efficiency. Blades are mounted on a rotating
disc and are exposed to a hot gas stream with temperature T =1200 °C and
convection coefficient of h = 250 W/m 2 .K over the blade. These blades (made from
Inconel, k=20 W/m.K) have a length of L=50 mm. The blade has a uniform cross-
section area of Ac=6x10-4 m 2 and a perimeter of P=110 mm. The proposed cooling
scheme (which involves routing air through the supporting disc) is able to maintain
the base of each blade at a temperature of Tb=300 °C.

(A) (10) Is the proposed cooling scheme satisfactory if the maximum allowable blade
temperature is 1050 °C and the tip may be assumed to be adiabatic?
(B) (10) For the proposed cooling scheme, what is the rate at which heat is
transferred from each blade to the coolant?

uniform temperature of 20 °C, and the heat transfer coefficient on the surface is 8
W/m 2.K. Treating the apple as a 9-cm-diameter sphere and taking its properties to be
ρ=840 kg/cm 3 , Cp =3.81kJ/kg ·°C, k=0.418 W/m·K and α=1.3x10-7 m 2 /s.
(A) (10) Determine the center temperature of the apple in 1 hr.
(B) (10) Determine the surface temperature in 1 hr.
(C) (10) Determine the amount of heat transferred from the apple.

4. (15) A 30-m-long, 10-cm-diamtert hot water pipe is buried in the soil 50 cm below
the ground surface as shown below. The outer surface temperature of the pipe is
80 °C. Assuming the surface temperature of the earth is 10 °C and the thermal
conductivity of the soil at the location is 0.9 W/m  °C, determine the rate of the
heat loss from the pipe.
