Action Plan

By: Paige Doyle

Scenario

▰ Susie is a ten year old girl in the 3rd grade.

▰ Susie's parents are going through a divorce and
she currently visits the school counselor 3 times
a week to learn to cope with this change.
▰ Her teacher frequently catches her spacing out
during lessons.
▰ Susie's often states that school is boring and that
she hates it.
Engagement Strategies
▰ During this tough time in Susie's life she is clearly
struggling with engagement. Engagement
strategies are tools that educators can use to
ensure that students are engaged to get the best
possible outcome, as active learning requires
students to participate in class
▰ One plan for action I would consider for this
student is, including fun engagement strategies
into a lesson such as using physical movement.
These strategies may improve Susie's
engagement in class as well as her peers.
Community Building

▰ Susie's is dealing with divorce at home which can cause a

place usually associated with community to no longer be. By
building a sense of community in the classroom Susie now
has a place where she can get the support she may be
lacking at home.
▰ One plan for action I would consider for this student is,
building a sense of community in the classroom. You can do
this in many ways, one way being building community
through Predictability.
▰ You can do this by establishing predictable routines. This
helps children know what to expect and helps them feel
confident and capable in the group.

Growth Mindset

▰ Growth mindset is the idea that, with effort, it's possible to increase
intelligence levels, talents, and abilities. Students who demonstrate a
growth mindset believe their abilities develop over time.
▰ Susie's parents divorce is currently having an impact on her
schooling. By encouraging growth mindset in the class she will be able
to see that she can overcome her academic issues with effort and
time, instead of giving up because she “can't do it” or because she's
“not smart enough.
▰ You can encourage growth mindset in many ways one being, Display
visible reminders of growth-mindset vocabulary using inspirational
posters and bulletin boards. You could also have students make their
own growth mindset posters.
