Public Health is defined as “the art and science of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting
health through the organized efforts of society” (Acheson, 1988; WHO).
Public health according to american public health association :

The practiceof promoting and protecting the health of. populations using
knowledge from nursing, social, and public healthsciences.
Give three aspects of health and define each:

Mental heath deals with how we think, feel and cope with our daily lives. ...
Physical health deals with the body's ability to function. This includes
exercise, nutrition, sleep, alcohol & drugs, and weight management.

1. Income and social status - higher income and social status are linked to better health. The greater
the gap between the richest and poorest people, the greater the differences in health.
2. Education – low education levels are linked with poor health, more stress and lower self-confidence.
3. Physical environment – safe water and clean air, healthy workplaces, safe houses, communities and
roads all contribute to good health. Employment and working conditions – people in employment are
healthier, particularly those who have more control over their working conditions
4. Social support networks – greater support from families, friends and communities is linked to
better health. Culture - customs and traditions, and the beliefs of the family and community all affect
health.
5. Genetics - inheritance plays a part in determining lifespan, healthiness and the likelihood of
developing certain illnesses. Personal behaviour and coping skills – balanced eating, keeping active,
smoking, drinking, and how we deal with life’s stresses and challenges all affect health.
6. Health services - access and use of services that prevent and treat disease influences health
7. Gender - Men and women suffer from different types of diseases at different ages

Define disease?
A disease is a particular abnormal condition that negatively affects the structure or function of part or
all of an organism, and that is not due to any external injury. Diseases are often construed as
medical conditions that are associated with specific symptoms and signs.
