1. What is Biology?

Ans: Biology is the natural science that studies life and living organisms, including their
physical structure, chemical processes, molecular interactions, physiological
mechanisms, development and evolution.

2. What are the major division of the biological science?

Ans: There are three major branches of biology – botany, zoology and microbiology.
3. Give 5 traditional branches and modern branches of biological
science.
Ans: Traditional Branches
Taxonomy – study of naming and classifying organism
Genetics – study of heredity and variation.
Cytology – study of structures and function of cells.
Anatomy – study of structures and organism.
Physiology – study of functions of living organism and their parts.
Modern Branches
Bioinformatics – study of biological data using computer programs.
Genomics – study of the entire genetic material of an organism.
Molecular biology – study of molecules that make up the cells of living organism.
Pharmacogenomics – study of how genes affect a person’s response to drugs.
Proteomics – study of the different proteins in an organism.
