Graphite Coatings
Many of the new one-piece pistons have two important characteristics: a graphite coating on the skirt and an oil
passage inside the crown. Refer to Illustration 2. Some pistons manufactured after 1996 do not have a graphite
coating.
Illustration 2
The graphite coating on the skirt helps to prevent cold start scuffing and seizure. If the piston has a graphite coating it
is normally about 0.020 mm (0.0008 inch) thick, dull (not shiny) and dark gray in color.
The graphite coating will eventually wear off the piston surface where the piston contacts the liner. This wear is
normal and will not create problems. It is important not to remove more of the graphite coating during the cleaning
operation. The coating can be worn on any portion of the piston, but the piston skirt must be smooth and free of any
deep scratches and material build-up.
Anodized Layers
The top of some one-piece pistons have a hard anodized layer. This layer protects the aluminum piston top from the
heat of combustion in high output engines. If removed, the layer cannot be replaced. Pistons manufactured after 1996
do not have the anodized layer.

Oil Passages
The oil passage, which is used for cooling, runs along the circumference of the crown. For the location of the oil
passage, look for the holes in the bottom of the piston and lube slot for the piston pin in each piston pin bore.
The pistons with steel crowns bolted to aluminum skirts are considered one-piece pistons because they are not to be
taken apart.

Procedure to Clean
Solvent
The recommended method for cleaning any Caterpillar engine piston is by using high quality, biodegradable solvents.
Use a solvent that is capable of removing all carbon deposits while having no effect on the aluminum in the pistons.
Glass Beads
Use this method only when the preferred solvent method is ineffective. Certain precautions must be taken when
cleaning with glass beads. (Glass beads tend to alter piston dimensions and can hide cracks during visual inspection.)
Never use glass beads larger than 230 microns (0.009 inch) to clean any part of the piston. Size 10 glass beads, 88 to
149 microns (0.0035 to 0.0095 inch), used with 550 to 620 kPa (80 to 90 psi) air pressure, will give the desired results.
Size 9 glass beads, 125 to 177 microns (0.0049 to 0.0070 inch) through size 11 beads, 75 to 125 microns (0.0029 to
0.0049 inch) are also acceptable. Change the glass beads and check the nozzle regularly for best results.

One-Piece Pistons
The crowns may be cleaned with glass beads. However, several areas of the piston must be protected from the glass
beads. Refer to Illustrations 3.
Note: After the piston is cleaned, it is important to check the oil passages. Make sure all passages and other areas are
free of debris or glass beads. Any foreign material allowed to remain on the piston can be washed into the lubrication

Clean the graphite coating on the piston skirt with a solution of liquid detergent and water. Specifically, use a solution
of liquid detergent (with little or no chlorine content) and water. A good detergent is Chemtool CitraSoap, which is
174-6884 Cleaner. Mix eight liquid ounces with every two gallons of water (240 mL per 3.8 liters).
Put the piston into this solution long enough to loosen carbon and oil deposits. Remove the piston as soon as it looks
clean. To clean the skirt faster, heat the detergent and water solution to a temperature of about 55ºC (130ºF).
Note: If the graphite coating is removed during the cleaning process, the piston is reusable if it meets all other
acceptability criteria.
Never use glass beads to clean the skirt (Illustration 7) or the oil ring groove. To clean the oil ring groove, cut a small
brush (like a tooth brush) to fit and use the same mixture of soap and water as for the skirt.

After cleaning the piston with glass beads, remove any debris from the oil passages with air pressure.
After cleaning the piston with glass beads, use air pressure to remove any debris (or foreign material) that got into the
oil passages during the procedure to clean. Refer to Illustration 15. Also, wash the piston thoroughly again in the
detergent and water. Apply a rust preventative to the iron ring band to prevent rusting.
Some one-piece pistons have a hard, anodized layer on top of the pistons. This layer protects the aluminum piston top
from the heat of combustion. Under normal operation, this layer will last the life of the piston. If the layer is removed,
it cannot be replaced. On one-piece pistons, glass bead cleaning cannot be used to clean the top of the piston or the
skirt. Cover the top of the piston when using glass beads to clean the ring grooves. Refer to Illustration 16.

Due to structural improvements to the oil galley and the piston crown, the anodized layer is no longer necessary. Field
and laboratory data have also demonstrated that there is no need for the phosphate-graphite coating.
The new piston without the anodized layer and phosphate-graphite coating can be interchanged with the earlier made
piston that contains these two features. There is no noticeable difference between the coated and uncoated pistons
other than a difference in color. See Illustration 17 and 18. The color difference has no effect on the usability of the
pistons.
Non-Anodized Pistons can be cleaned without the cap that is required for the Anodized Piston. When cleaning Non-
Anodized Pistons, follow all cleaning guidelines for pistons as described in this Guideline. Anodized Pistons still must
follow the preceding guidelines to protect the anodized layer and phosphate-graphite coating during cleaning.
Illustration 17

To clean the tops of pistons with an anodized layer, use a hot soap and water solution in the same way as cleaning the
skirts. The same solution of Chemtool CitraSoap and water used to clean the skirts may be used to clean the piston
crown.
While cleaning the top two ring grooves and the top land area with glass beads, use a plastic cap to protect the anodized
layer. The cap needed depends on the diameter of the piston and the depth required for the cap to cover all that needs

The piston has four ring grooves located at the top of the assembly. The top two ring grooves are machined in the steel
crown. The bottom two ring grooves are machined in the aluminum skirt. Be sure to use different methods and
procedures to clean each material (steel and aluminum). Clean the steel crown with a chemical solution to remove
carbon build-up. Clean the aluminum skirt with a solution of liquid detergent and water to prevent damage to the
graphite coating.
Tape or plug the oil passages, used for feeding the crown area and the bottom oil ring, when using glass beads. The
location of the oil passages are:
• The hole on the bottom of the piston skirt that feeds the piston pin,
• The four cross-drilled holes from the bottom ring groove to the inside diameter of the piston,
• The hole in the center of the bottom side of the piston crown and
Earlier production pistons may have four lube slots in the pin bore.
During glass beading, protect the graphite coating on the skirt and the oil ring grooves (bottom grooves). Let the
protective cover slightly overlap the crown and skirt joint. There will be a small open joint approximately 0.5 mm
(.020") at the parting line of the crown and the skirt. This will eliminate the possibility of glass beads becoming lodged
in this opening.
Several methods can be used to protect the graphite coating on the bottom of the aluminum skirt. They are:
1. Tape.
2. Shim stock with band clamp.
3. Rubber tubing.

The aluminum surface of the graphite-coated skirt can be cleaned with a solution of liquid detergent, with little or no
chlorine content, and water Chemtool Citra Soap (174-6884), is a good detergent to use.
Let the piston stand in this solution, normally one to two hours, to loosen carbon and oil deposits. Remember, too
much time in the solution may cause damage to the graphite coating. Remove the piston as soon as it looks clean. To
clean the skirt faster, heat the detergent and water solution to 55ºC (130ºF). Flush the oil passages with a pressure
washer.
NOTICE
The steel crown can be cleaned with a chemical solution or glass beads. Flush the oil passages with a high pressure
washer and Hydrosolv 4165 to remove any contaminates from oil passages.
When using glass beads to clean pistons, it is very important to protect the graphite coating, the pin bore surface and the lube slot
in the piston pin bore from bead damage. Tape all surfaces and oil passages to prevent damage or beads from entering the
passages.
Two-Piece Pistons
The two-piece piston crowns may be cleaned with glass beads. However, several areas of the piston must be protected from the
glass beads. Refer to Illustration 19.

After cleaning the piston with glass beads, use air pressure to remove any debris (or foreign material) left in the oil
passages during the cleaning procedure. Wash the piston thoroughly again after cleaning with glass beads. Apply rust
preventative to the crown of the two-piece piston.
The Ring Groove Gauge can be used on all pistons to check keystone ring grooves. This gauge is recommended over
former methods of checking ring groove wear because of its increased accuracy. This gauge works on both one and
two piece pistons. Refer to Chart A for the correct gauge part number.

Some one-piece pistons use an iron band for the top and intermediate ring grooves. The iron band is bonded to the
piston during the manufacturing process. In applications where the engine is subjected to cold starts, 10ºC (50ºF) or
colder, the potential of damaging the iron band bonding is very high. The end result will be a loose iron band. If the
iron band is loose/unbonded, the piston cannot be used again. It is very difficult, if not impossible, to identify a loose
iron band by a visual inspection.
Ultrasonic inspection is the only reliable method to determine if the iron band is correctly bonded to the piston body.
The ultrasonic method is used by the manufacturer to verify iron band retention. For questions and additional
information on the ultrasonic inspection of iron band retention contact the Dealer Service Support Group (309) 675-
5434.
