6 problem 9

Problem: yexy cos(2x) − 2exy sin(2x) dx + xexy cos(2x) − 3 dy = 0

Put M = yexy cos(2x) − 2exy sin(2x), N = xexy cos(2x) − 3

Then it is easy to confirm (or use Derive!) that My = exy ((xy +

1) cos(2x) − 2x sin(2x)) = Nx

So: the equation is exact.

Now, we find some integrals - the following are from Derive:

M dx = exy cos(2x) + x2 + · · · y · · ·

N dy = exy cos(2x) − cos(2x) − 3y + · · · x · · ·

Note that the extra cos(2x) term in N dy is entirely irrelevant (and
somewhat bizarre); the term is a constant as far as y is concerned, so
it gets ’absorbed’ into the · · · x · · · bit.

These match up to exy cos(2x) + x2 − 3y, so the final general solution

is:

exy cos(2x) + x2 − 3y = C
