MULTICAM - LAB

Dominic Strevens Interview Planning

Multicam Meeting One

In this meeting me and the team discussed the roles we are going to take on for our
interview with media industry editor Dominic Strevens.
We discussed what roles would be best suited to each person and made sure everyone was
happy with their role, I am the presenter/ interviewer who will be talking to Dominic, Joe is
the Director, Chloe is the script supervisor, shaq is the vision mixer, the cameramen are
sam, finley and harvey, Tommy is the sound engineer.

In this meeting we also discussed what questions we are going to ask Dominic Strevens, we
did this in a collaborative document, members of the crew added questions to the
collaborative document and only the best questions were picked.

Multicam Meeting Two

In this meeting we discussed the questions we will be asking Dominic Strevens in further
detail, deciding what questions were appropriate and which were not as a lot of the
questions were about Line of Duty we thought that we should not ask too many questions
about Line of Duty however we will be asking some, we will also ask about his other projects
e.g. Broadchurch, Marcella and Humans.
We will be asking how he got started in the media industry and how he became an editor, we
will also ask what his favorite production was to work on. I will ask him for advice for
someone wanting to get into the media industry.

Multicam Meeting Three

In this meeting we will be finalising the questions for Dominic Strevens.

We will also be planning for the interview this includes: finding out what equipment we need,
floor planning, where cameras will be placed, getting permission to film in a location etc.
I discussed the planning with Joe, Sam, Finley, Harvey and Tommy.
In this meeting I devised the risk assessment for the interview and the location release.
Multicam Meeting Four
Monday - Rehearsal

This is the final meeting before the production day, in this meeting we ran through the floor
management, the lighting plan, the script in the studio. Everyone ran through and rehearsed
their responsibilities in their selected roles.
I practiced the timing of my questions and rehearsing my script.
I also helped the cameramen with the positioning of the chairs in the interview, I helped them
find the right positioning for lighting for me and Mr Strevens.

Justification of my role

I have been chosen to be the presenter / interviewer as I have a very distinct and clear
voice, I suggested that I should have this role and my peers agreed on this.
One reason I wanted to be the presenter is because I am familiar with the process of
interviewing as I have been selected to do it before in previous productions.

Interview Review

My role was as the only presenter, I believed I performed my role well, I chose this role as no
one else wanted to be the presenter and I believed that I would be well suited to this role as I
am a confident individual and I am well-spoken, I would say I performed my role well,
however communication within the crew and myself could have been drastically better, I did
not know what my crew were telling me, The use of an earpiece would have been beneficial
as I would be able to hear what the crew are telling me from the other room without them
interrupting the interview. One communication problem I faced was in the first run through,
we ran overtime and my crew tried to tell me to close up the question, however they did not
do this sufficiently and I thought there was an issue with the interview e.g. sound, cameras
but there was not. After this the crew showed me their action for close up the question, so in
the second run-through I knew the action. Another problem was that the cameramen were
making too much noise, when listening back to the interview you can hear this, I tried to
signal to them however did not want to mess up a perfect run-through with the guest. My role
stayed the same throughout the interview as my purpose as presenter was the same
throughout the interview, my purpose was to entertain conversation about the questions with
Mr Strevens and I did this well.

Our interview was aimed at students aged 16-20 looking to get into the media industry,
media is an industry that everyone wants to get into so we asked Dominic Strevens
questions that we hoped would give guidance to viewers and I believe we were successful in
doing so.
Our interview was special as our interviewee has loads of experience in the media industry
as an editor, so for our aimed purpose this guest was perfect. Dominic Strevens gave some
very helpful answers to our questions which will offer some very good insight to people
looking to get into the media industry, this is what made our interview special.
My pre-production paperwork helped me keep organised throughout the planning and filming
process, the risk assessment was useful as it alerted every member of the crew to potential
hazards within the recording space, the floor plan helped get everything organised and
helped everyone find a position in which cameras and equipment were not seen on shot, the
gantt chart helped me complete the tasks I needed to do for certain timeframes which was
very useful, overall I would say my pre-production paperwork was successful.

When recording with Dominic, it was fairly difficult and I did have to do two run throughs due
to us running overtime, however on the second runthrough I had narrowed down my
questions from 10 to 4 which reduced the length to an appropriate length. On the second
run-through it was a lot smoother, I did not have to look at the questions as much and looked
at the cameras and Dom.

I think the final product is good overall however there could be a few minor tweaks like the
background noise, apart from that it is good.
The feedback that I received was good, I delivered my role confidently and well spoken
which was my aim, in this I was successful.

Studio Setup and Disassembly

I helped with the disassembly of the studio, this involved ripping up the hazard tape,
untangling wires, rolling wiring up, putting lights away, putting cameras away, returning
equipment to other departments. Disassembling the studio took around twenty minutes,
some wiring for lighting and cameras got tangled so I took my time to de-tangle the wires
and roll the wiring up tom put it away. I also took a lighting softbox back to the art
department, this was borrowed as we were one short.
