Unit 24 - sound editing

Learning Aim B
DAWs
A DAW is a digital audio workstation, A DAW is a electronic device or software which is used to record and/or edit sound or
audio files. This is typically done on laptops through downloadable software s but can also be done on a integrated stand
alone unit or complex set up with multiple components but no matter what all modern DAWs have a central interface which
allows them to alter and mix sound recordings into a final product.

DAWs are used for the production and recording of music, songs, speech, radio, television, soundtracks, podcasts, sound
effects and nearly any other situation where complex recorded audio is needed.
Cubase pro
Created by steinberg, Cubase pro is a music editing software which is used to composing records with “outstanding” audio
quality and merges it with intuitive handling and a collection of highly advanced audio and MIDI tools. It lets you record
anything from live shows to studio work with high quality results.

The downside to this programme is the pricing. The programme is ranged from around £85 for a simple edition and goes
all the way to £480 for the elite edition. This is very expensive for a DAW and can put a large dent in your pocket.

The programme can only be used with a USB-eLicenser which prevents the illegal download and pirating of the
programme however costs an additional £19 which takes the price to just under £500 and the loss of this USB can not
only cost you an additional £!9 for another but also the access to the equipment /program
Pro tools
Pro tools offer 3 different softwares for users. One is a the pro tools - first music software that users can create
music with up to 16 tracks for free, their standard edition which allows the user to create music with up to 128
tracks which users can pick up for a year for £20 a month or £25 a month with bonuses or up front for £250 or
£500 with bonuses or the pro tools ultimate which again can be paid in monthly subscriptions of either £83.25 a
month or £100 a month depending on the subscription or an upfront cost of just under £1000 where u can add
up to 256 tracks. This software would normally be used in studios to create music and is one of the easier daws to
use as people that are just starting out found it was easy to navigate and understand.

What i like about pro tools is that it provides different functions for different audiences however it lacks in midi
abilities where as other DAWs have this technology already meaning it is at a disadvantage in the market. Its
upgrade is also very expensive.
Logic pro
Logic pro is a MIDI sequencer and DAW developed by apple and costs £200 to run. It has recently
undergone improvements, one being a smart tempo feature, which is used to automatically detect
tempo across the entirety of a project

The program is seen as being very versatile and provides loads of effects which can be used to
create tracks.

Apple's investment has paid off as the DAW has become one of the top end softwares for sound
editing and has acquired a large fan base and gained popularity over the years. However there is a
fault with the system as you can only make one track at a time. This is very inconvenient for
content makers.
FL Studios
FL studios, formerly known as fruity loops, is used by many professional artists to produce and edit tracks or songs. The
software is used for many different genres including Hip-hop, EDM and also used by many djs. It’s a big hit with ‘in-the-box’
producers (not using anything but software) due to its spreadsheet-like Playlist > flexible Piano roll > extensive
automation capabilities.

It is probably the closest DAW to a professional studio level equipment and it provides a really good quality of service
for those who use it.

The sound quality of some imported sounds are not of a good standard, and people would suggest you should use the
instruments within the engine. This makes the track created feel electronic instead of having that real, live element to it
as it is all synthetic sound.
Premiere pro
Premiere pro is a video editing software developed by adobe systems. The software is timeline-based and
allows users to edit both sound and video together to make scenes or films etc. the software comes in a
adobe creative cloud licensing program bundle which comes with photoshop, after effects, illustrator and
more. You can get the bundle for £20 a month for a year and then £40 after that.

Overall the editing software is very useful and straightforward to use. a Iot can be used to create big and
small productions. However the format looks a bit dated and needs powerful hard drive to export.
Final cut pro
Final cut pro is also an editing software but is owned by apple. It is also used by filmmakers in order to make or edit
different scenes or short films etc. There are many different features to final cut such as the video category, the music
category etc. the only problem is that is access it on mac.

Pros
Cons

1. Good effects and titles 1. Timeline is odd

2. No monthly payment, own it for u. 2. Needs a different software to export some
3. Good imports. formats
3. Collab tools are not as good as other DAWs
