Unit 24 - sound editing

Car chase edit
The car chase edit was a timed edit which had to fit within a specific time frame of 30 seconds. The edits plot is about a
furious chase through busy streets, however the clips allocated were slow paced so needed to be sped up. This could have
been done through 4 point editing, however i did it by going to clip>shot>speed/duration and changing the speed to a higher
percentage. Nevertheless, this is where 4 point editing became useful as i could get the clips to fit in the right, specific time
frame. I also added an EQ to the audio to give the effect of a song being played on the radio, this was done by going to
effects>audio effects>EQ then dragging it onto the audio file in the sequence. I then adjusted the audio by going to the
audio settings, custom setup and played about with the frequencies.
Volcano Edit
The volcano edit required many sound effects to be added over the top of a tense soundtrack in order for the ready made
trailer to make sense and be tense. For example the sound effects of glass, explosions and helicopters have a more
realistic viewing due to the adding of their sound effects, but only if the sound effects are in sync with the movement of the
visuals, if not then it could create a sloppy looking edit. I was provided the sound effects already but had the freedom to use
them when possible and where needed, for example the use of screams when crowds are running overlaying the tense
soundtrack creates more tension as the screams unease the viewer as the soundtrack creates an uncomfort through the
use of base and build up. I also overlaid a helicopter propeller sound and water being poured onto fire to create the right
sound to the visuals.
Horror edit
I edited many different sounds within my horror edit in order to create tension. The use of different sound
effects like heartbeats to show the distress of the character as well as adding to the tension of the film,
which can be portrayed to the audience through these effects and creating a passive viewing experience. I
also used soundbridges in order to unravel the plot and explain to the audience the plot by using the
characters voice. I feel that i used sound effectively in was as i portrayed this idea of tension and showed
the audience the fear of the protagonist and the sound in the background added to this. However i feel that
i could’ve added a tense soundtrack which played throughout as well as these sound effects in order to
add to the tense atmosphere.
Hospital edit
In the hospital edit i tried to allow the characters breathing space to show that they were in conversation. I
also used sound effects to suggest the hospital is on a busy road and tried to match up the sounds with the
action on screen. I also tried to keep the sound as minimalistic as possible to suggest this uncomfortable
atmosphere and how the characters are now suffering from something very tragic. I also added a sound
effect over the doctor talking to suggest how the female character zones out after finding out the bad
news. I feel that i could have edited this sound more effectively as it is very loud and randomly stops and
doesn't fade out etc. which would make the edit more effective and not asd ameteur.
