Activity 1
Can You Grow New Plants from Eyes?
Objectives:
After you have performed this activity, you should be able:
1. Describe how potatoes reproduce;
2. Explain what vegetative reproduction is; and
3. Describe the advantages of growing plants using vegetative
reproduction.
Materials Needed:
 1 potato
 5 big cans filled with garden soil
 Trowel
 knife
Q1. Planting potatoes normally start with a seed potato. Seed potatoes
can be prepared for planting by either planting whole or cutting up the
seed so that there are one or two buds or “eyes” on each piece. There are
many ways used for planting potatoes: Straight in the ground – Farming
operations and large plantings of potatoes are normally planted this way.
This method for growing potatoes means that seed potatoes are planted 1
inch under the soil. As the growing potato plants get larger, the soil is
mounded up around the plants.

Q2. I was able to get 9 eyes.

Q3. There are 2 new shoots grew from each tomato.

Q4. The potato tuber is not only the principal mean for potato
propagation, but also a major human food source. Potatoes are mainly
propagated by vegetative methods (cloning). Potato tubers have nodes
or eyes from which the new growth begins. The new stems growing
from each eye are called sprouts which giver rise to the new plant.
Vegetative seed can be either a whole tuber or a cut tuber. Physiological
age of seed is influenced by growing conditions, handling, storage and
cutting procedures, and it has an impact on how the new crop grows.
