A Detailed Lesson Plan in Science Grade 8

I - Objectives

In the end of our 60-minute class period the students will be able to know:
 The relationship of the amount of force applied and the mass of the object to the
amount of change in the object’s motion.
 How body responds to changes in motion.
 Demonstrate Newton’s first Law of Motion

II- Subject Matter

a. Topic: Newton’s Law of Inertia

b. References: Science Learner’s Module pg. 10-11
c. Materials: Chalk, Empty glass, card board, 1-peso coin, 5-peso coins (or more), plastic ruler

III - Procedure:

A. Learning activities
Teacher’s activity Student’s activities
“Good Day Class” Good day ma’am

“Okay! Let us Pray.” (students stand and pray)

(Checking of Attendance) Class monitor “nobody is absent for

“Class Monitor who is absent for today?” today ma’am

“Okay Class pick up the pieces of paper on the Students pick up the pieces of paper
floor” on the floor

“Okay let us have a recap what we have discussed One of the students asked to discuss
last time” the topic last meeting.

Before we proceed to our next lesson would you Students follows what I’ve said
please close your eyes and imagine yourself in a
place that there is nothing which is moving. Can
you figure out the reason why I pleased you to
close your eyes? Without motion, there is no such
living thing is, there is no momentum and
scenarios that we are experiencing in our daily
lives.

Discussion
Law of Inertia
Every object continues in a state of rest, or of Students listen attentively
uniform velocity, unless compelled upon by forces
acting on it.
An equivalent statement of the law is that.
if there is no force, or net force acting on an
object, then
a. The object at rest continues to remain at
rest.
b. The object in motion continues to move
with uniform velocity.
Inertia-the extent to which a body resists changes
in its state of rest or motion is characteristic of the
body.
Thought experiment leading to the first law
Every bit of matter has net force acting on it; even
body at rest on earth’s surface is acted upon by
the unbalanced gravitational force of the sun,
which keeps it and the earth orbiting around the
sun.

First Galileo observed that a ball allowed to roll

down one plane and up a second plane reaches
almost the same horizontal level from where it
started.
Now, what if the second plane was horizontal?
The ball continues to move at constant speed
along the horizontal plane. Unless acted upon by
an opposing force the ball does not stop.

“okay class, so what is the 1st law of motion and

what can you conclude about the discussed topic Students answered the given
today?” question.

Application
Coin Drop Activity
1. Arrange the setup as shown in Figure Students performed the given activity

2. Slowly pull the cardboard with your hand and

observe what happens.

3. Arrange again the setup as shown. This time,

quickly flick the cardboard with your
finger. Observe again what happens.

“What happens when you slowly pulled the “Ma’am, when we slowly pulled the
cardboard? Explain.” cardboard, the coin on top moved
with the cardboard.
“Very Good”
“The frictional force acting between the coin and
the cardboard caused the coin to stay on top of
the cardboard and move with it.”

What happens when you flicked the cardboard? When the coin was flipped quickly,
Explain. the cardboard moved forward but
the coin did not move with it. When
the cardboard was removed from
“Very Good” underneath it, the coin dropped into
the glass.
“The coin did not move forward with the coin
because of the tendency of the coin to stay at rest
(inertia).”

Stack of Coins
Stack the coins on a flat level surface.

Quickly hit the coin at the bottom with the edge of

the ruler.

“What happens when you hit the coin at the “When we hit the bottom coin with
bottom? Why is this so? “ the edge of the ruler, it moved out
from the pile of coins but the other
“Very Good” coins stayed in place. “
“The inertia of the coins has caused them not to
move out with the coin that was hit by the ruler.

Generalization:
The examples above demonstrated the property
of an object to resist any change in its state of
motion. In physics, this property is known as
Inertia. The coin dropped into the glass because it
was trying to remain in a state pf rest.

Law of Inertia:
A body will remain at rest or move at constant
velocity unless acted upon by an external or
unbalanced force.

IV - Evaluation

Make a graphic organizer on what you have learned in the first law which is the inertia.

V - Assignment

1. Research an example word problem regarding the law of inertia.

2. Have an advance study about second law of motion.
