Abstract

Cockroaches have been around for millions of years, evolving into some of the

most adaptable pests on Earth. There are approximately 4,000 living species of

cockroaches in the world. They are commonly found in buildings and homes because

they prefer warm environments close to food and water. Unfortunately, cockroaches can

cause allergies and trigger asthma attacks, especially in children. They can also spread

nearly 33 different kinds of bacteria. Thus, this study has been conducted to come up with

Pandan Leaves extract that has linalool which was used as scent in 60-80% of perfumed

hygiene products, cleaning agents including soaps, detergents, shampoos, and lotions,

and it is also used by pest professionals as a flea, fruit fly and cockroach insecticide.

Pandan leaf is long, thin, narrow, and green. It is sold fresh, frozen, or dried. The

leaves and flowers also come as bright green extracts. The flowers are golden yellow and

have a fragrant, strong,

s low levels of essential oil, including 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline (which also gives the

aroma in Thai and Basmati rice), styrene, linalool, and β-caryophyllene. It also contains

piperidine-like alkaloids (pandamarine, pandamarilactones) that give screw pine its milky,

floral-like taste.

Fresh Pandan leaves were macerated and squeezed its sap. Sprayed in the

container with 2 or more cockroaches gradually, the insects weakened and paralyzed.

Key Words: Pandan Leaf, Pandanus Amaryllifolius, Insect repellent, Cockroaches

Chapter I

Background of the Study

Insect repellents are important public health tools for the prevention of insect-borne

disease. Insect repellents can help prevent and control the out breaks of diseases.

Pandan leaf extract can be used as cockroach repellent, a natural and environmental-

friendly cockroach nauseating.

Objectives

This study was conducted to provide evidence that Pandan leaves extract is an

effective cockroach repellent.

Hypothesis

If Pandan leaves extract sprayed with in the habitat of cockroaches the

cockroaches repelled, then, it is effective repellent against cockroaches.

Significance of the Study

Cockroaches are considered as disease-carrying insects; they carry harmful

bacteria and leave bad odours. Cockroaches may spread a variety of diseases. It is

believed that the cockroach may be a reservoir for a range of bacteria including

salmonella, staphylococcus and streptococcus. They even harbor viruses such as

the polio virus.

These insects are habituated in some places inside our houses; there is a big

possibility that members of the family are prone to diseases.

With this, the researchers conducted this study enable to formulate a product

which is environmental friendly and at the same time costless.

Scope and Limitations

The focus of this study is to determine that the Pandan leaves extract is an effective

repellent against cockroaches. Considering the performance of this will be observed

during the experiment done at home or the behaviour of the cockroaches placed in the

container after spraying the Pandan extract and/or tap water. The data gathered through

observation.

Definition of Terms

Pandamus Amaryllifolius is a tropical plant in the Pandamus genus, which is commonly

known as pandan leaves, and it is used widely in South East Asian for cooking as

additives.

Cockroaches are insects of the order Blattodea, Sometimes called Blattaria, a beetle-

like insect with long antennae and legs, feeding by scavenging. Several tropical species

have become established worldwide as pests in homes and food service establishments.

Extraction is an act or a process of obtaining the active ingredient of a substance in

concentrated form.
Review of Related Literature

In the Philippines, pandan leaves used as natural food additives particularly in

cooking rice and flavor to some sweets. As can be observed, the uses of the Pandan

plant are not limited to cooking uses. Its leaves and roots are found to have medicinal

benefits.

Chapter II

Methodology

Materials:

pandan leaves, bowl, strainer, spray container, blender, slice board, knife, and cloth

strainer.
Procedures:

Extraction of Pandan leaves:

a. Extraction is the main procedure for obtaining the Pandan essence.

1. Prepare 32 grams and 64 grams fresh pandan leaves.

2. Wash the Pandan leaves with fresh and clean water.

3. Slice the Pandan leaves thinly.

4. Then put the sliced Pandan leaves in the blender with 8 tablespoon of water.

5. Strain and squeeze the liquid as much as possible.

b. Spraying the essence where the cockroaches are haunted.

1. After extraction, put the Pandan extract on a spray container.

(Note: before extraction process looks first the habitual place of cockroaches)

2. Move to the place where the cockroaches hide.

TRIAL 1: Spray little amount of water extract all over

the area

TRIAL 2: Spray half of extract of 64 grams Pandan

leaves all over the area.

TRIAL 3: Spray the extract of 64 grams of Pandan

leaves all over the area.

cockroaches is depending on the amount sprayed.

Chapter IV

Discussion

Based on the experiments made, the habitat of cockroaches when sprayed with

Pandan leaves extract they repel, while the place where sprayed with water cockroaches

doesn’t repel. It is because of the aroma or scent of the essence, hexane content, and

the presence of linalool in the pandan leaves made the cockroaches repelled.

The repellency of Pandan leaves extract to the cockroaches

In relevance to the experiment made, the more amounts of extract pandan leaves,

the more cockroach repel.

Chapter V

Conclusion

The researchers therefore conclude that the hypothesis was right. Pandan Leaves

Extract is an effective repellent against cockroaches, and an effective alternative to

commercial insect repellent. Its effects were weakened and paralyzed the cockroaches.

Recommendation

Based on the experiment conducted, we confidently stand that Pandan Leaves

Extract is indeed the best intervention in repelling cockroaches than using chemical-
based insect repellent. We recommended this to use it at home as it proven an effective

repellent against cockroaches. It is safe to use, economical and environment-friendly.
