ABSTRACT

Teenage pregnancy has a great impact on women and her baby. The body of teens are

not well developed and not yet ready to bear a child in their womb so there is a high probability

that the baby and mother can suffer from a health problems like:(1) Premature birth of the baby,

(2) Anemia, (3) Pregnancy-induced hypertension of the Mother that can lead to preeclampsia

(preeclampsia is the sudden rise of blood), (4) Higher rate of infant mortality, (5) possible greater

risk of Cephalopelvic disproportion (the baby's head is wider than the pelvic opening of the

mother), so it is advised by the health specialist to have a regular checkup. In this study, we will

discuss the experiences of the teenage pregnant woman during and after their pregnancy period.

It aims to give information and knowledge about the common struggles that a teen mom and her

baby experienced, the regular routine of a teenage woman to maintain their health status

throughout the pregnancy period and common health problems that a teenage pregnant woman

and the baby could get with this problem.

The researcher used thematic analysis to make meaning out of narrative of seven

(7) people that undergo to the face-face interview about their experienced in teenage pregnancy.

An impromptu question following the interview schedule was used to elicit their experiences of

being teen age mother. Throughout their pregnancy they experience a lot of changes like

Physiological Changes, Physical Changes. Their practices in their everyday life can be a big factor

on their health. Also having a Antennal Care can be the best way they cope up with the struggles

they experiences.

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

With the poverty experienced by some people, it is highly possible that they were prone

to cases called teenage pregnancy or also known as adolescent pregnancy. A Teenage Pregnancy

is the pregnancy of a teen woman with age of 13 to 19 years old. Pregnancy is highly possible to

a woman that had already begun their puberty or adolescent stage and had already done sexual

intercourse with their partners. Teenage pregnancy is social problems that are continuously

spread and not yet resolved in the Philippines. In fact, the Philippines is one of the countries in

Southeast Asia with the highest adolescent pregnancy rate with an average rate of 47

%.(Crisostomo, Sheila, 2018 April 15)

For the teenagers, it is important to have the knowledge, information’s, and awareness

about the early teenage pregnancy because with that age, anytime that you engage with sexual

activity, you will have a high possibility to experience the unwanted pregnancy. Teenage

pregnancy has a great impact on women and her baby. The body of teens are not well developed

and not yet ready to bear a child in their womb so there is a high probability that the baby and

mother can suffer from a health problems like:(1) Premature birth of the baby, (2) Anemia, (3)

Pregnancy-induced hypertension of the Mother that can lead to preeclampsia (preeclampsia is

the sudden rise of blood), (4) Higher rate of infant mortality, (5) possible greater risk of

Cephalopelvic disproportion (the baby's head is wider than the pelvic opening of the mother), so

it is advised by the health specialist to have a regular checkup. According to the study of

Parungao, C. et al. (2014, February), Teenage pregnant woman is carrying an extra health risk

together with her baby so the nurses are playing a crucial role in assisting young pregnant woman

as a trusted health practitioner in a hospital and other related places. Regular check-up is

necessary to a pregnant woman, special a pregnant woman who is giving birth to their first child.

With the regular check-up, it can decrease the health risk of the mother, and her baby to suffer

health problems or much worst death. In the Philippines there are already a record of woman

specifically the teenage woman was died because of giving birth from their first child. According

to the reports of the Department of Health (Alimondo, L. 2018), Women who get pregnant with

age of 10 to 19 years old have a higher risk of dying. Doctor Virginia Narciso, a health official from

the department of health (DOH)- Cordillera child and adolescent health development cluster

head said that teenage pregnancy maternal mortality is two to five times more than the normal

adults and mentioned that the best way to prevent a pregnancy is the practice of sexual

abstinence. DOH study shows that 22 percent of maternal deaths are commonly happening

among mothers aged 15 to 24 years old while 20 percent of those who deliver at 15 to 17 years

old will be pregnant again in two years. There is also a record of neonatal death rate, wherein it

is three times higher (14 percent) than to woman age 25 to 29 years old (six percent)

In this study, we will discuss the experiences of the teenage pregnant woman during and

after their pregnancy period. It aims to give information and knowledge about the common

struggles that a teen mom and her baby experienced, the regular routine of a teenage woman to
maintain their health status throughout the pregnancy period and common health problems that

a teenage pregnant woman and the baby could get with this problem. With this study, we are

hoping that this information will be used to further understand and solve the case "teenage

pregnancy" that is continuing to spread in our country. We hope that with this information, policy

about the preventing of the occurrence of teenage pregnancy. We hope that with our study we

can bring awareness about teenage pregnancy so that the case of the said problem will be

lessened. We hope that with this study, teenage moms will have enough knowledge for them to

prevent any cases of health problems that are occurring with pregnancy period.

Research Locale

This study will be conducted at National Steel Corporation (Nascor) at Brgy. Ibayo Tipas,

Nascor is one of the places in Brgy Ibayo Tipas that have a large amount of teenage pregnancy in

the present. The place is in between or in the boundary of Pasig City and Taguig City, the place

composed of more than 100 families. The participants in our research are composed of 4 Teenage

mothers and one Specialist in the said field. Our participants are mainly composed of 17 to 19

years old, as the interview starts, we are willing to understand the circumstances of our

participant. We choose to conduct our study in NASCOR because it is easier for us to engage with

our participants as we have a connection with them and it can also handier with our participants

to answer the following questions we prepared for the interview.

THEORETICAL PERSPECTIVE

Teenage pregnancy is a mysterious social problem that is continuously spread and not yet

resolves in the Philippines. The point of conducting this research is to inform, to give awareness
and to give a deeper understanding to the teens which are prone to what we called early or

adolescent pregnancy. In this research we used three theories that are related to our research,

these theories are The Developmental theory, the theory of reasoned action and the social

conflict theory.

Adolescent pregnancy is can be acquired by any teens who already begin puberty and

engage to sexual intercourse. We set Freud's theory called "Developmental Theory" as one of the

reasons why do people engage in sexual intercourse that brings up to unwanted pregnancy. This

theory clearly stated that we all have this so-called "psychosexual stages" which is composed of

five stages the oral, the anal, the phallic, the latent, and the genitals. These five stages develop

our instinctual libido (sexual energy) that we possess since birth. These stages are satisfied with

different actions like for example at the oral stage, this stage begins at the newborn baby, when

the baby is crying the mothers usually put pacifier or a bottle of milk for them to sip, with that

action, the baby stops crying because he or she uses his/ her mouth (oral) to take pleasure, to

ease hunger and most likely attention. The genital stage is commonly begun with the teens that

already start their puberty. This stage is involving the actions that will satisfy the genitals or the

reproductive organs of both male and female such as masturbation. The adolescent pregnancy

might happen because partners want to satisfy their genitals and to feel pleasure through sexual

intercourse without thinking about the outcome of that action. Sexual intercourse will just give

you a short term of pleasure wherein after that action partners should take full responsibility to

the consequences like having an unwanted pregnancy. In every action that we are up to, we have

an intellect to choose decisions like if we are going to do that action or not. Certain action have

done because of people’s behavior and intentions towards a problem or a situation as what said
by the theory developed by Martin Fishbein and revised and expanded by Fishbein and Icek Azjen

called "Theory of reasoned action" all action of human is based on intention and behavioral

attitude towards to one problem or one situation. An action is a result when intention and chance

are fulfilled.

Entering to unwanted pregnancy is a hard situation that the teen moms are facing off

especially teen moms were part of a poor family, wherein the health condition of the mother and

her baby is in crucial situations. A teen pregnant woman is needed to have a regular checkup for

them to monitor the condition of the baby but because poverty condition of the baby hasn’t

checkup and born them to a malnourish child or some cases baby died. According to the Social

conflict theory of Karl Marx, tensions and conflicts arise when resources, status, and power are

unevenly distributed. This theory is somehow poor vs. rich, wherein the people involved in a rich

family are the one who is prioritized rather than to the poor family who obviously needed a

prioritization.

The theories said were able to help us in completing our research in a way that those theories

help us make a questionnaire for our depth interviewing, formulating of suggested ways to

prevent this so-called “adolescent pregnancy” that is present in our country.

STATEMENT OF THE PURPOSE

The Philippines are one of the countries having high adolescent birth rates next to

Cambodia, Thailand, and Indonesia. As we only focus on the effects of teenage pregnancy in our

economy, we set aside the true danger behind this.

In this research, we will mainly focus on the different experiences that a teenage mother

may encounter throughout childbearing and the risk that may pose a danger to her and the child

she is bearing with her. But as we go on, we may also look for different aspects of this research

to discover new knowledge about this topic that can help to have a wider perspective on this

topic.

The research aims to look for the experiences during and after Teenage Pregnancy.

Specifically, it will answer the following:

1. The Common struggles that are being experienced during teenage pregnancies.

2. Daily Practices that they applied throughout the pregnancy.

3. The ways of handling their health status during pregnancy

4. Their ways to cope up with the difficulties they experience in childbirth

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study will give knowledge and deeper understanding about the life of teenage

pregnancies during and after birth. It can also add ideas to other fields or group of people if they

want to know something about this study. Moreover, it can serve as reference material in the

future.

TEENAGERS –This study aims to increase the awareness and knowledge on how harmful teenage

pregnancy may be, especially teenagers are the one who is involved in this case.
TEENAGE MOTHERS- This study aims to that they will be able to know their Adversity quotient

and how resilient they are to the different risks of teenage motherhood. They will also know how

they can surpass the risk they may encounter by understanding the right way to handle it.

PARENTS – This research aims to give awareness to the parents, that they will be able to know

what risks and challenges their daughter may be encountering thus, enabling them to give a

positive intervention to their daughter’s situation.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT – This study will serve as a reference for the local government so they

could be able to implement and facilitate projects concerning the rate of teenage pregnancy

issue. They could be able to understand the deeper problem behind teenage pregnancy.

FUTURE RESEARCHERS – This research will serve as reference material to the future researchers

to come up with other studies. It can also give additional information to them when they want

to conduct their research related to this study. The future researchers will also benefit to this

study because of the availability of information that we already conducted.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION

This study focuses primarily on the lived experiences of teenage pregnancies during and

after the pregnancy. We want to know their knowledge, perspective, idea about the risk of being

a teenage mother and how did they engage with this risk. Sharing their experiences or knowledge

about this topic can give as a pearl of proper wisdom for us to complete our research.

Our main respondents for this research are the teenage moms from NASCOR. We choose

4 teenage moms to part of our research. We will conduct this research in National Steel
Corporation (NASCOR) . We are going to gather data by means of an interview. We will conduct

our research there since NASCOR have a number of teenage pregnancy presence in their

community. We are going to conduct this study within two months starting January to February.

We will do this study in two months since it is only the time that is given to us to finish this

research.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Teenage Pregnancy –pregnancy by a female that ages between 13 to 19 that is not appropriate

for childbearing as they do not have enough skills to support herself financially and physically.

Child Bearing- it means the process of a woman having a baby.

Adolescence - the point of life where a person is developing to be an adult.

Risk -A threat or a negative occurrence that can pose a danger for the health of the mother and

the baby.

Childbirth – the move of delivering a baby.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Teenage pregnancy is social problems that are continuously spread and not yet resolved

in the Philippines. In fact, the Philippines is one of the countries in Southeast Asia with the highest

adolescent pregnancy rate with an average rate of 47 %. (Crisostomo, Sheila, 2018 April 15).

When people see a teenage pregnant woman, they are thinking that the baby is at the unstable

condition, that baby is in bad condition and mother is not thinking right because she let herself

to become pregnant at the early age. Until now teenage pregnancy is more likely to occur in

marginalized places wherein extreme poverty was experienced that leads to having a lack of

education and employment opportunities. Teenage pregnancy said to be as one of the symptoms

of the poverty experienced in a country where in the economy itself were affected due to lack of

productivity of teens. As what recorded teenage pregnant women in 2017, 26.2 percent finished

primary education while only four percent went into college (Dom Galeon, 2018, May 13).

Teenagers who at in this situation are often left school, hide their situation to society including

with their parents and much worse they abort their baby.

Every action done by every individual happens for a reason. Our actions depend on our

behavior and attitude toward that situation. We are considering, as with higher intellect than

other animals. Hence, we have the intellect to identify what is bad for good actions. (Theory of

reasoned action: Lezin, N. 2007). However, teens’ curiosities lead them to do such a thing that
might result in harmful consequences like an unwanted pregnancy. In the Philippines, lack of

sexual knowledge, lack of financial, family problems and uncontrolled emotions are common

factors that will lead to unwanted pregnancy (Pogoy, Angeline M. et.al 2014, January) The said

factors are worsened by another factor: the exposure of teenagers to pornography, sex from

magazines, TV shows and movies (Rebecca B Singson, Philippine Daily Inquirer, 2008) that will

lead to build up a curiosity about sexual activity. In contrast, other researches from other

countries reasons begin with self-responsibility. According to the study of Ibrahim Yakubu and

Waliu Jawula Salisu (2018), shows that from Uganda, South Africa, and Ghana, teenage

pregnancy happens due to force sexual initiation like rape, sexual harassment, and prostitution.

Teenage pregnancy occurs also because of the gateway drugs that are the intake of an individual

such as alcohol, and illegal drugs like marijuana that will affect their mind to have unknown

actions. Due to poverty, some women are used to become a sex slave to earn money and use it

to meet their basic needs, wherein it becomes one of the reasons why teenage pregnancy usually

takes over with marginalized places (McCleary-Sills J et al. 2013, May 21), However there are also

cases where teenage pregnancy happens also in a developed country like the United States of

America, in fact, USA Teen pregnancy rate is higher than many other developed countries

wherein as of 2013, the USA has 43 births per 1000 women aged 15 to 19 years old, unlike in

Sweden that has a 29 births per 1,000 women and in France has a 25 births per 1,000 women.

These women are said to be pregnant because they are not aware of the use of contraceptive

like condoms and lacking guidance with their parents. (Lowen, Linda, 2018, November 11).

Teen pregnancy is a social problem that is present and not yet resolved in developing and

not developing countries. The incomprehension about the sexuality and reproduction in today
society can increase the early initiation of coital relations and of unwanted pregnancies. A

situation in life and the experiences of being surrounded by adolescent mother can be at risk of

repeating the early pregnancy pattern. In experiencing Teenage pregnancy, the consequences

are incomplete education, fewer possibilities to have a stable life, difficulties in handling mother

role, and lack of chances in improving her socioeconomic level (Molina, et.al, 2012). Teenage

pregnancy had been a worldwide problem that causes the large numbers of campaigns and

awareness to lessen its occurrence. The rate of teenage pregnancy is increasing each year. The

Philippines belongs to the countries in Asia that experiencing this kind of phenomenon. The study

of National Demographic and Health survey in 2013 shows that in every young Filipina that age

between 15 to 19 years old is already a mother or pregnant with its first baby. Teenage pregnancy

usually associated with the social stigma that's discussed with the development issues such as

the condition of the mother, the level of education mother acquire and the situation in life she

experiences. That result to single parenthood that can allow the mother to be irresponsible

(Jordan Salvador, et. al 2016). The main thing that you can observe to those who experienced

teenage pregnancy is poverty, stigma, loss, lack of parenting skills. The complicated part of being

a teenage mother is depending too much to their parents, because of lack of knowledge in terms

of parenting and financial source. Despite of the condition of the teenage pregnant women, their

parents chose to protect and teach them to gain positivity. Teenage woman can find the meaning

of their life through accepting and loving their child

The complicated part of being a teenage mother is being a child inside the house but also

have a child, a teenage mother cannot support herself she still relies on her parents. But can give

off positive experiences as she connects herself to her child, she can find the meaning of her life
through her child (Zyl, L., Merwe, M. & Chigeza, S. 2015). Teenage pregnancy is commonly

connected with the poverty including the low salary, squatter type of community and the low

school attainment. Family problems such as broken family or the ignorance of the parents to the

wellbeing of its child by giving less time to bond with them and the lack of parental guidelines.

There are influences that may acquire in hanging out to the wrong types of friend like drinking

alcoholic beverages. The consequences of teenage pregnancy are experiencing discrimination

like how they get into the situation in teenage pregnancy or having a rumor about what do they

do. Some teenage mother copes up with the situation by flying to abroad, to attain more goals

or to continue their study (Meneses, J. & Saratan, C. 2015). Teenage pregnancy is common to

those teenagers who have low educational attainment or have a poor quality of life but this study

shows the but there is also an increasing numbers of teenage pregnancy who are not poor or to

those teenagers that have a proper or better education and those who live in residential areas.

The factors that can affect this phenomenon are the young people at menarche, premarital sex

at young age, the increasing number of couples who live with each other even they are not

married and the decrease of the stigma about having parent that is not even married (Natividad

2013).

Teenagers who experience pregnancy between the ages of 10 to 19 years old have a

higher chance to have a complication during childbearing that may cause of death, a health

official said, Doctor Virginia Narciso, a health official said, that teenage pregnancy has a higher

rate of maternal death or maternal mortality that adults and allude to sexual restraint as the best

mediation for those teenagers who get pregnant. In the Philippines, DOH shows that 22 percent

of maternal death is common to teenage mother while 20 percent those teenagers who get
pregnant in the age 15 to 17 will be pregnant again after two years. (Alimondo, 2018). According

to the survey of the National Demographic and Health Surveys (NDHS 2017) from the Department

of Health, Philippines is the only country in the Asia-Pacific region where the rate of teen

pregnancy in increasing in the last two decades. (Elicay 2018). Early pregnancy creates a greater

risk for both mothers and babies. The teenage mother tends to have shorter periods of the birth

spacing of all age groups. But thinking of the fact that their bodies are not yet ready for the

physical and mental demands of childbearing, having a closer pregnancy interval exposes the

teenage mothers to have a higher risk during the time of delivery (UNFPA 2017). A teenager does

not seek medical assistance during their childbearing can lead to moderate to severe

complications. The most typical medical complications that may occur during the pregnancy of

teenagers include toxemia, placenta prevue, high blood pressure, anemia, and premature birth.

Teenage pregnancy has a big impact on the baby’s growth and development over time. Experts

said that babies born by teenage mothers have a delay in intellectual and motor development,

and have more ongoing behavioral issues (Bodeeb 2018).

Entering teenage parenting is not easy because there will be a lot of changes will be

arrived such as the physical changes (signs of being pregnant), emotional changes (the societal

pressure and the unexpected and not accepted pregnancy) and social or attitude changes (being

matured, thinking and socialize as a parent and not being a teenager) that teenager must control

and pay attention to prevent harmful consequences especially in terms of physical changes.

There will be things must learn to be a successful teenage parent such as: (1) learning to be

pregnant through reassessment and reevaluation of bodily sensations; (2) adopting new routines

of care for the body; and (3) performing normalized cues and routines of pregnancy (Neiterman,
E. 2012, September). In the Philippines, some areas are experiencing extreme poverty so teenage

pregnant woman in that place has a hard time to get a regular checkup and buy some nutritious

food for them, even though Some teenage pregnant woman has a money to have regular

checkups they didn’t do it because of embarrassment they feel for their situation, that’s why

instead of going to a clinic they tend to have consultation in albularyo and any form of traditional

health care (Black, R. E., et.al Maternal and Child Undernutrition Study Group. 2008). Unlike in

Bangladesh, they take care of their infant through child feeding that will help the baby to be

healthy. In line with this caring, hospital services were improved and fasten to protect also the

teenage women from having a higher health risk through giving medical needs of a teenage

pregnant woman. Health specialist is not only the one who taking care the mother and her baby,

but it is also the responsibility of the mother to protect themselves in any form of hazard, hence,

teenage women in Bangladesh practice the regular checkup and eating nutritious food like fruits

and vegetables (Hackett, K.M. et.al 2015). Same with Nigeria, teenage pregnant woman practice

the regular checkups and eat nutritious food, but in contrast, Nigeria is lacking maternity services,

most especially in rural areas which are often deficient and inappropriate to the teenage

woman's situation consequently, the numbers of maternal deaths were increased. (Okafor B., &

Rizzuto, R. R. 2009).

The mistakes of the world are warning message for you, (line from the wealth of words

of Amit Kalantri). Having awareness to our surroundings will help us to prepare, plan and prevent

those things from happening. One of the goals of our research is to give awareness about the

teenage pregnancy to all people, especially to the teenagers to prevent it from happening. Usage

of contraceptives like condom during sexual intercourse can prevent the unwanted pregnancy
but the best way to prevent a pregnancy is the abstinence from sex (Alimondo, L 2018). Teenage

pregnant women give births in the US have declined, but still, more than 273,000 infants were

born. To decrease the number of births in US the article state that the doctors, nurses and other

health care providers can: (1) encourage the teens to not have sex, (2) recognize Long-acting

reversible contraceptives (LARC) as safe and effective choice to have a control birth, (3) offer

broad range of understanding about birth control such as the pros and cons, (4) proper usage of

contraceptives ( Insertion and removal) and last, remind teens that not only pregnancy can occur

after sex but also to have a Sexually transmitted infection (STI) ( National Center for Chronic

Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Division of Reproductive Health 2015, April 07).

The said Pieces of literature in every paragraph help us to know deeper about the social

problem “teenage pregnancy". Those articles had explained all necessary information that is

needed by our group to accomplish our research, the Cause, effects involving the Health risk, and

even preventive ways to lessen this problem (teenage pregnancy). As we go on for further

research it will aim to explain (1) The Common struggles that are being experienced during

teenage pregnancies. (2) Daily Practices that they applied throughout the pregnancy. (3) The

ways of handling their health status during pregnancy (4) their ways to cope up with the

difficulties they experience in childbirth. And we tend to prove the common misunderstanding

between about having a poor life is the cause of adolescent pregnancy or teenage pregnancy is

not because of the quality of life but the lack of knowledge about sex education and the exposure

of teenagers nowadays with different sexual materials. With the help of said literature, we can

obtain a study that will give knowledge and deeper understanding about the life of teenage

pregnancies during and after giving birth. We tend to add more knowledge about the
phenomenon of teenage pregnancy by having a clearer understanding about what happens to a

teenage mother during and after birth and their daily practices that can affect the whole process

of pregnancy that may influence to the health risk they may encounter.
CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY

RESEARCH DESIGN

This study will use Narrative as our research design. Narrative research involves a

sequence of events, mental states, occurrences having human beings as characters or actors,

(Bruner 2002). According to Clandinin and Connely (2000, p. 20) narrative research is "a way of

understanding experience" involving "a collaboration between researcher and participants, over

time, in a place or series of places, and in social interaction with milieus". The most common

narrative research can be described as a methodology which consists of gathering stories about

a certain theme where the researcher will find out information about a specific phenomenon.

For the collection of data for this kind of design, there are several techniques can be used: the

interviews, reading and analyzing journals and autobiographies, oral recording, written

narratives, and field notes. In gathering events and happenings as data, the researcher uses

narrative analytic procedures to produce explanatory stories". Summing up, "narrative inquiry

embraces narrative as both the method and phenomena of study" (PINNEGAR and DAYNES,

2007, p.5).

This study will use narrative as our research design, wherein we will go to narrate the

story of our respondents about their experiences during and after Teenage Pregnancy including

their struggles that are experiencing during pregnancy period, their routine applied throughout

the pregnancy period, their ways of handling their health status and their ways to deal with the
difficulties they experience in childbirth. we can have those stories through interviewing our

respondents. Knowing the story of our respondents, it will enable us to create an analyzation

about the experiences of teenage pregnant women throughout the pregnancy period and can

have a conclusion about this problem.

SAMPLING METHOD

This study will use the purposive sampling, snowball sampling and accidental sampling as

our method for having our respondents. Purposive sampling is one of the nonprobability

sampling methods wherein the researcher seeks their respondents in a community with a

purpose of completing their research because they think that these respondents are suited the

profile of people that they need to have. (Ben Foley, 2018). Having this kind of sampling can lead

to what we called bias, but according to Tongco (2018) this bias contributes to its efficiency and

makes this sampling method remains robust. She states that choosing purposive sampling is

essential to the quality of data gathered, hence, reliability and the competence of the respondent

must be ensured. According to John Dudovskiy (2018) Snowball sampling method or also known

as chain-referral sampling is a non-probability sampling method wherein we use it when the

characteristics of our samples are not common and difficult to find; thus, we get our subjects

through referrals from our initial subjects to generate additional subjects. Last is the accidental

sampling method. Accidental sampling is also called as convenience sampling is a sampling

method wherein the researchers can be identified and approached their respondent as little as

possible. (Ben Foley, 2018). We will use purposive sampling in getting our respondents that would

be helpful to accomplish our objective.

We will use purposive sampling as we purposively go to our research locale and find our

respondents. Our group will go to NASCOR with the purpose of asking the teenage pregnant

woman about our research topic “teenage pregnancy”. We got the other respondents in an

accidental sampling because we already know someone that would help to reach our objectives.

These participants involve a friend of our group and a family of our group. We got the rest of our

respondents in a snowball sampling because our respondents got from an accidental sampling

have an acquaintance that has the knowledge and can help in our research.

DATA COLLECTION METHOD

This study will use Semi-structured interviewing as its data collection method, according

to Bernard (1988), Semi-structured interviewing is best when you think you only have one chance

to interview your participants. Semi-structured interviews guide gives dependable,

proportionate data. Semi-structured interviews used before the observation to allow researchers

to have more understanding of the topic for them to have relevant and useful questions. A Semi-

structured interview frequently conducted with the list of questions yet the arrangement of

question can be varied. The interviewers have the freedom to add and explore additional

questions to have a more significant answer (Bryman, 2004).

A semi-structured interview was the main data collection we used for our research. We

use this in order to collect sufficient and reliable data to add more information about our study.

As we used this type of data collection, we prepared our interview schedule in advance to give
assistance to us for the flow of the interview. The questions we did were mainly open-ended

because it allows our participants to express more thoughts or feeling and also it can offer further

details about the research topic.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The Common Struggles in Teenage Pregnancy

Struggles in this research paper talks about the events and things that can give a hard

time for teenage mother. After gathering data, the following themes arrive from their narratives:

Physiological Change, Health Problems and Physical Change.

One of the phenomenal biological process is pregnancy that includes continuous changes

in physiological systems just to help the development of healthy baby. These changes involve

weight gain, hormonal changes, immune system modulation, and others, which must all be

coordinate to each other to maintain the good condition of the mother and it’s offspring (Dunlop

et al., 2015). Multitude od physiological changes are incorporate in a plenty of healthy

developmental process such as pregnancy, fetal development and infant development (Koren et

al., 2016).

During pregnancy physiological changes naturally occur to help in nurturing the

development of the fetus sand prepare the mother for labor and child birth (Mebazaa et al.,

2016).

“I feel dizzy every time, and I am so specific with the smell I hate when I smell

something, I don’t like then I hate moving around I prefer to sleep that do something.

Also, I want to sleep all the time. “-Participant 1

“I am always irritated with my surroundings as if they were annoying even,

they did nothing wrong. I also feel so uncomfortable; it was hot

and itchy” – Participant 3

Physiological changes can be difficult to handle as our participant state.

The theme about the Health Problem’s talks about the diseases that give a really hard

time to a teenage mother during and after their pregnancy When the natural metabolism of the

body failed or modified because of pollutant, pathogen, or other object that can be a origin of a Commented [eja1]:

health problem which are treated as disease, health issue can occur (HSJ, 2019).

Some problems begin during the pregnancy, but some women have health problems

before they become pregnant that could arrive to complications. Either a complication is

common or rare, there are process to handle problems that come up during pregnancy (OWH

2019). Health problem like complications can occur during pregnancy. They can affect the health

of the mother. The baby’s health or both that’s why receiving a health care before and during the

pregnancy is very important to those mothers because that can lessen the risk of complication

that may occur during pregnancy (Eckert 2018).

“My blood pressure increases then I experience swollen body especially in my

lower part of the body” – Participant 1

“I experience high blood when I was pregnant, then my feet are totally

swollen” – Participant 4
“I experienced having UTI when I was pregnant and that is my first time”

– Participant 6

Woman’s physical body undergoes a lot of transformation in the process of pregnancy.

Some of physical changes are visible in every pregnant woman such as expanding belly and

weight gain, while some are commonly known, like enlarged uterus, morning sickness and

backaches. And some other changes can occur unexpectedly and can catch women by surprise

(Nierenberg 2015).

Physical Changes in this research talk about the possible changes in woman especially

teenage body when they undergo in a process called pregnancy. Hormonal fluctuations can be a

cause of physical changes that happening in a pregnant woman also the development of the baby

(Lumen 2019).

“I mean my tummy is getting bigger as time goes by then my craving stop

as my tummy gets bigger” – Participant 2

“My face features change, then I always vomit and you can observe that

my body is getting bigger, I’m getting fat” – Participant 4

“I feel that my face is swollen up, then I getting fat” – Participant 7

There can be a lot of changes in women’s body during pregnancy but most of them

disappear after the child birth. These changes can cause some symptoms which are normal

during pregnancy (Brown 2016).

Daily Practices they Applied throughout the Pregnancy

Daily practices are a big factor that can affect the process in pregnancy. In this paper daily

practices are what the teenage mother usually does in their everyday life during and after

pregnancy. After we finalized the data that we gather the following themes came up: Medication

Adherence and Healthy Lifestyle.

Medication adherence defined as the ratio of the number of drug doses intake to the

number of doses recommended over a given time period as the medication possession ratio

(MPR 2015).Medication Adherence in this research talks about the medicines, vitamins and

supplements taken by the teenage mother throughout their pregnancy journey to accommodate

the needs of her body and baby.

Medication Adherence is the degree to which the person’s behavior towards the agreed

recommendations from the doctor (WHO 2015). Medication Adherence usually refers to the

number of drug intake of a patient as prescribed by their doctor, as well the decision if they want

to continue the prescribed medication (Bryson et al., 2009).

“My assigned doctor recommends me some vitamins that can help me

in my needs” – Participant 7

“The doctor gave me some medication for my pregnancy” – Participant 5

As our participants say especially participant 7, doctors require a pregnant woman To

have medications for them to have a better condition throughout the pregnancy.

Healthy Lifestyle in this research talks about the healthy routine a teenage pregnant

woman does during and after her pregnancy that is a big factor in her health status. The way of
living that lowers the chances or the risk and developing some illness is called Healthy Lifestyle.

When it was adopted, a person can be a positive model that can be a role model to other people

in the family, particularly children (WHO 2017).

Embracing healthy lifestyle can help a pregnant woman to be fit, energetic and healthy,

based on the choices that a pregnant woman to be daily practices. Good Nutrition, exercise, and

enough sleep are the foundations for the continuous good health (Clarke 2017). Healthy diet is

one of the important parts of the healthy lifestyle and more important during pregnancy. Healthy

eating can give you enough nutrients for you feeling good and for the health of the baby while it

was still in the womb (PBO 2018).

Some of our participant states the important of having a good lifestyle in the time of their

pregnancy.

“It the same in my normal days but I was more careful with the food I eat

I maintain in eating nutritious food the check-up” – Participant 1

“I woke up early to start my household chores it simple was my exercise

every morning” -Participant 3

“Every day I eat healthy foods, because I need to be healthy for the sake

of the baby” -Participant 5

The Ways of Handling their Health Status During Pregnancy

A teenage pregnant woman is said to be prone to different health problem. In this

part we will discuss how teens handle their health status throughout their pregnancy period.
From the data we gathered, we made six themes: The Antenatal care, healthy eating and

nutrition, immunization, and last Family planning.

The monitoring of the health of the pregnant woman is necessary to do for the sake of

the baby and the mother as well. We have arrive the theme "antenatal care wherein this theme

talks about the regular check-up of pregnant woman in her pregnancy period to know their

current health condition and get some medical advises from the doctor. According to E. Abalos

et al. Antenatal care is the care provided by health practitioners to all pregnant women to ensure

that these women and their babies will have a better condition throughout the pregnancy period.

The basic components of the antenatal care include the risk identification, prevention and

management of pregnancy specifically diseases or health problem that may occur and as well as

the health promotion. Through antenatal care the pregnant woman can know if there is a health

complication that is involve in her pregnancy. This health complication can be solved with regards

of agreeing with the recommendations of the health care provider called as medication

adherence (Charlotte A. et al., 2005).

” I went to the hospital and the doctor advised me to take medicine (Neozep), drink a

lot of water and take rest to cure my corticipant 3

“Every month I go to the doctor to check my condition, with that checkup the doctor

ask me to take vitamins due to having Urinary tract infection or UTI” - Participant 7

The condition of the baby inside the womb of a mother is fully dependent with mother

thus; the health status of the mother is affecting the condition of the baby.
The next theme is about healthy eating and nutrition. The foods taken by the pregnant

woman is affecting the condition of the baby so in order to give the baby a good condition, the

mother should be aware about her nutrition. Nutrition is the sum of the total substances’ intake

inside of our body and the utilization of food substances wherein the growth, repair and

maintenance of the body are completed. It involves ingestion, digestion, absorption and

assimilation. Nutrients are stored by the body in various forms and drawn upon when the food

intake is not enough. (Adam Brookover, April 16). Human can have enough nutrients through

healthy eating. Healthy eating is a pattern of eating that supports our physical, mental and even

the emotional health. It includes making the diverse and balances our food that meets our

needed nutrients and energy. (Breastcancer.org 2019). Healthy eating involves the practice of

proper diet and consumption of vitamins.

“I had lessened the eating of rice and drinking of cold water to reduce my weight.

The doctor gives me vitamins like calcium for my blood.” ~ Participant 1

“The doctor advised me to eat healthy foods especially the vegetables, take rest and

lastly take vitamins for the baby” - Participant 4

The life of the baby is the priority of every teen mom. They protect their child during their

pregnancy and even after giving birth. During their period the only way to protect their child is

to keep their self-safe from their surroundings. Personal safety is the next theme, which talks

about the actions of a teen mom on how they protect their child inside their womb. Pierre

Maurice et al. defined Safety as a state wherein hazards leading to physical, psychological or

material harm are under control in order to preserve the health and well-being of individuals.
Meaning, personal safety is the freedom from physical harm and freedom from hostility,

aggression, and harassment by members of the community or even its surroundings. (Thompson

Rivers University).

“I keep out my womb with the dangerous thing to avoid it from hitting.” - Participant 3

“I keep out my baby to things that he might get sick” - Participant 4

“I prefer Breastfeeding to my baby to have stronger body” - Participant 5

The next theme is the practice of immunization. In this theme, it will talk about the

immunizing of the baby. According to the world health organization (WHO) when we say

immunization, this is the process where the person made immune or resistant to the infectious

disease. This is the tool for controlling, preventing and the eliminating the infectious disease

through injecting vaccine. This immunization was takes place after giving birth.

“For the health condition of my son we do a regular immunization in the clinic”

- Participant 1

“To protect my child, we immunize her and do check- up with the doctor”

- Participant 2

At last, the family planning. This is talks not only about the birth control but the also the

health of teenage pregnant woman. Family planning enables a woman to know and identify the

time, spacing and the frequency of pregnancy with a range of methods for preventing while

maintaining the normal sex life (Theodore H. et al 2014). In addition, information, some women
are not good at delivery of their baby as a consequence they tend to give birth in cesarean or

other health complications involve in delivery.

“The doctor said to me “please do family planning so you can avoid the large number

of children because you have a hard time to give birth” - Participant 3

Their ways to cope up with the difficulties they experience in childbirth

We had discussed their struggles, for this time we will discuss how they cope up with

those struggles they experience within their pregnancy period. From the data we gathered we

arrived at one theme the self – efficacy.

Self-efficacy refers to the individual own belief, their belief about their capacity to execute

behavior needed to produce specific performance attainment. Self-efficacy is the ability of

human to exert control over a situation, their behavior and even their social environmentt

(Bandura, 1977, 1986, 1997).

The self-efficacy of the teenage pregnant woman can lead them to cope up their

difficulties through the pregnancy period in a way that teen mom to act as mom, daughter, wife

and even as a student. The self- efficacy can be seen in many ways like for example the time

management of teens, teen moms are expected to be at school not taking care of her own child

but then due to the self-efficacy they tend to do that both because they have an ability to control

their behavior and execute it properly to achieve or to meet their goals. If the mom wants or

need to make their delivery normal, they can make it through self-efficacy as well, in a way that

mom will wake up in the morning and walk. In short, this so-called self-efficacy is tantamount to

the word self-productivity.

” I walk every morning, to lower my uterus so I can easily give birth” - Participant 6

“I'm feeling lazy, but I solve this situation in a way that, I will wake up early

in the morning and do all the house old chores after that I have enough time

to sleep.” - Participant 3

“At first it really gives me a hard time to take care of my child because I have to

wake up every night but as time pass by I am used to be in that way”. -Participant 6
CHAPTER 5

CONCLUSION

After analyzing the data, researchers came up with the conclusions and the answers to the main

questions of their study.

 The common struggles that the teenage pregnant woman within their pregnancy period

are the physiological changes that is only natural to happen, health problems that may

come up during the pregnancy and the physical changes that only happen as the mother

providing the need of the baby.

 Medication Adherence and Healthy Lifestyle are the daily practices that teenage pregnant

woman need to practice throughout the pregnancy period.

 The teenage pregnant women handle their health status through having antenatal care

and medical adherence, the practice of healthy eating and nutrition, the immunization of

the newborn baby and lastly the family planning.

 The teenage pregnant women cope up their difficulties having self- efficacy.

kabataan na baka sakaling may pumasok sa ganoong sitwasyon?

Respondent Para sa akin sa ngayon sa panahon ngayon sa mga kabataan, kung di naman natin
mapigilan yung pakikipag boyfriend, alamin muna nila yung advantages at disadvantages
Tawag dito, noong first baby mo diba

asawa.

Interviewer Ayun lang salamat.
