Chapter I: The Communication Process
Oral Communication
Communication is the process of sending and receiving message in order to share
meanings. In order to have communication, there needs to be at least two people. These
two (or more) people interact with each other over a course of time, trying to understand
each other.
Communication has different forms, it could be oral or written (just like this one). Though,
this does not emphasize on that, but rather oral communication which involves speaking
and listening.

A Process

Communication is a process because it progresses from a starting point. This starting

point could be considered as the first time you ever meet a person. If you continue
communication with a certain person, then this process continues.

Verbal and Nonverbal Messages

A message is the way meaning is conveyed. Messages are at the center of the
communication process and without this, communication won't exist. There are two types
of messages, verbal and Non-Verbal. Verbal messages are spoken messages. Non-
Verbal messages are the ones that are sent or expressed without words. They rely on
facial expressions and body movements while Verbal messages rely on words.

When two people are communicating, both the speaker and the listener share the
responsibility of being good communicators.

Below are illustrations of how they can be good communicators in both Verbal and Non-
Verbal communication.
Communication In Your Life

Meanings

Common meanings for words, gestures, and facial expressions make it possible to
communicate. Meaning is the interpretation you place on Verbal and Non-Verbal
messages. If you and the person you're talking to does not have the same meaning
interpreted from something, then communication will be quite complicated. This is
especially more difficult when faced with abstract words, or something that usually lies in
someone's own opinion.

To find the meaning, one must also need to have the sense to interpret something in a
correct manner as the English vocabulary gives out a wide range of meanings for a word.

Family
A person's ability to speak and listen carefully has a great effect on life at home. If a
member/a number of family members do not know how to communicate properly,
whether it be speaking or listening, then it will cause minor to major problems at home.
This will be a problem since communication is quite important in a family. Good
communication gives family members a sense of belonging.

Friendship
Some of the most important people of our lives are our friends. People know the good
traits of being a friend and of course, a kind of friend they want but others have a hard
time keeping a friend because of complications. One complication for this is
communication. In friendship, clear communication is important if you want to help each
other out. You cannot be a good friend if you don't listen to them well- and it goes the
other way around too. Remember that communication is a two way process and
friendship is not excluded from that process.

School
School demands a lot of oral communication in different kinds of ways. It could be a class
report, recitation, a teacher asking you to lead a prayer, a school presentation, etc.
In this case, you need to be comfortable in speaking in front of a lot of people to get
through from this. If you cannot talk and listen comfortably or openly, then you might feel
like an outsider. As a student, you spend more than 50% of the class listening to the
teacher, and even then, during breaks you spend time talking and listening to your
classmates.
Work
A whole new world comes after graduation, and that's when you get to work. The
process of speaking and listening only levels up at this point since it also helps with your
career and future. When at work, you listen to different people, depending on the job
you're on.

You listen to your boss, co-workers, and your clients in general. In listening to these
people, the skill receiving the highest rating was a listening skill, and that is following
directions.
Citizenship

Communication, as we say, is very important. As a citizen of a certain country, and

community, communication is bound to happen at some point, especially when it comes
to electing the officers that will govern the people. These candidates will speak one by
one about their platforms while people listen. In turn, these people will speak out on the
things they want and these candidates must listen and heed to their needs and wants
especially if they want to get voted.

It is an important life skill as with communication, you can learn more about yourself and
others in the process while sharing feelings, opinions, and ideas. Communication is the
means by which you reach out to the rest of the world, and by which the world reaches
out to you.

Types of Communication

Interpersonal Communication
The word interpersonal means "between people". In this type of communication you are
in a conversation with another person. There are only 2 people involved.

Group Communication

In a group communication, there are more than 2 people involved. They work best when
members follow certain rules or patterns so there can be organization. especially when
there are assigned leaders to help the members communicate.
Public Communication

Just like having a school presentation or a candidate delivering his speech for elections,
these types of talks or communication is called public communication. You are not only
speaking to specific people or a person, but rather an audience, in which you have to
connect with to make the communication effective. Luckily, there are ways to study on
how to deliver a public speech nicely.

Interpretive Communication

Interpretive communication involves bringing literature to life for your audience. In the
end, it's not just about the literature itself, but it's about how you deliver it. It is specially
important because how you interpret/deliver the said piece will grab your audience's
attention. Unlike public communication, interpretive communication gives more
importance to the execution.
