Simonds International’s (SI) 60” & 72”

Carbide Insert HanFab Slasher Blade
Precautions, Requirements, and Maintenance Recommendations

CARBIDE INSERT TEETH:

 Badly worn teeth increase stress to the slasher saw plate. Consequently, worn
teeth require more horsepower to cut than sharp teeth. Set-up a scheduled
removal time for the slasher saws—before the teeth are dull. If a proper
maintenance plan is in place, the slasher saw blade will last longer, give you a
better cut, cut closer to the target size and will cost less to operate.

 Check for loose, broken, chipped, dull and/or missing teeth prior to each
operation of the saw.

 Tighten all loose teeth by hammering and/or replacing the rivets.

 Replace all broken, chipped and/or missing teeth.

 Sharpen and/or replace all dull teeth.

CARBIDE TIPS:

 Carbide is very hard: When a slasher saw is rotating at its recommended RPM,
and, at the same time, comes into contact with a hard surface; for example, steel,
the integrity of the saw is compromised. For instance, a crack may develop
around the saw hub/arbor, the hub/arbor bolts can loosen, the insert teeth can
become damaged, SI’s factory certified blade tensioning specifications are
destroyed, etcetera.
Simonds International’s 60” & 72” Carbide Insert
HanFab Slasher Blade Precautions, Requirements, and
Maintenance Recommendations (continuation)

REVOLUTIONS PER MINUTE (RPM):

 Saw blades are hammered by SI to operate at a specific RPM. Deviating more

than 25 RPM from the hammered speed may cause the saw blade to become
unstable and cause the saw to wobble.

 Saw blade wobble more than two inches, while the saw is idling, is considered
excessive. The saw should be removed and hammered by a SI approved
professional to replace the lost tension.

 Excessive wobble will generate heat in the saw blade plate, rapidly
accelerating the loss of tension. The overheated saw will then rub against the
logs as it is cutting, again increasing the heat in the saw and intensifying the
wobble. The saw may then crack and/or catastrophically fail. Never run a saw
that is cracked or bent.

 A slasher saw blade should be allowed to cut its way through the logs, never
forced or overfeed. Failure to allow a slasher saw machine to cut through the
logs will choke the saw blade. In turn, the saw blade RPM may cause the saw
to wobble, bend and crack. Saw blades driven by hydraulic motors lose RPM
rapidly. The operators must allow the saw blade a few extra seconds to build
up RPM and stand up straight before making the next cut.

SAW ARBOR/COLLARS/HUB:

 Check the collars every time you change the slasher saw blade, maintaining a
.003 taper on the face and always clean them before mounting another saw
blade. Have them re-machined if they are worn.

 Inspect the arbor/collar bolts daily for proper torque.

Parker F11-150 saw motor shaft bolt: 16MM-2.0, 10.9 require 200 FT LBS.
Two Piece Hub/Collar bolts: 3/4 NF GR8 require 350 FT LBS.
5/8 NF GR8 require 200FT LBS

GENERAL CARE:

 Setup an ongoing maintenance plan. Inspect saw blade and arbor bolts daily.
Remove saw blade and have it certified by a professional every 500
hours of operation.

When handling a saw blade never roll a saw on any hard surface, or allow it
to strike a hard object. Set it down on a piece of belting or wood to avoid
damaging the carbide insert teeth.

The general condition of the unit can be established by checking the drain flow. Remove the
drain line and keep the drain port above a suitable container. Run the unit at normal speed and
pressurize the system to 2000-3000 psi. (150 - 200 bar)
Measure the drain flow for one minute; if it exceeds the maximum figures shown below, the unit
is worn or damaged internally and should be replaced or repaired. Also, check for leakage at
the shaft seal and between the bearing and barrel housings.
