CHAPTER I

PROFILE AND HISTORYOF

MALIOBORO AND PRAWIROTAMAN

A. PLACE 1
MALIOBORO

Malioboro is a legendary shopping area that is one of the pride of the city of
Yogyakarta. Malioboro name comes from the name of a British colonial member who
once occupied Jogja in 1811 - 1816 AD named Marlborough. The Dutch East Indies
colonial built Malioboro in the center of Yogyakarta in the 19th century as a center of
government and economic activity.
The location of Malioboro is at 0 kilometers Jogja, Yogyakarta City Special
Region of Yogyakarta. malioboro has an area of about 2 kilometers, visitors who come
every day around 9600 people.
The purpose of Malioboro is as an alternative way for tourists to look for
souvenirs. Facilities and accommodation as supporting facilities that support the tourism
sector in this place are very complete. Five-star hotels up to jasmine class hotels are
widely available around this location such as on Mangkubumi street, Dagen Street,
Sosrowijayan Street, Malioboro Street, Suryatmajan Street and Mataram Street Or look
for lodging in the western part, i.e. on Ngasem street and Wijilan street area which is
located not far from Malioboro.
Many restaurants are spread in this region with a very diverse menu and tastes
ranging from angkringan stalls (wagon-shaped warungs that provide local food),
Yogyakarta specialties served in lesehan atmosphere such as gudeg, fried rice, sauce +
vegetables and so on. There is also a restaurant or cafe that provides Chinese food, fast
food or western cuisine in the form of steaks, beef lasagna and others.

5
B. PLACE II
PRAWIROTAMAN

Prawirotaman is a Gift Village of the Palace. A noble palace named Prawirotomo

received a gift from the Yogyakarta Palace in the form of a plot of land known as
Prawirotaman. From the 19th century onwards the Prawirotaman village began to
develop and was widely known to the wider community.
With the development of time, starting in the 70s the batik industry began to fade
so that the descendants of Prawirotomo stopped the batik business and changed to
become lodging service providers and then the Prawirotaman village was known as a
tourist village. The nuances of the village in the middle of the city if you enter this place,
greeting people who speak English is common because most tourists who stay in this
village are foreign tourists. Along the Prawirotaman road both on the right and left of the
road lined with inns and hotels with a variety of architectural styles, ranging from classic
Javanese style, unique to the style of today's buildings.
Prawirotaman Village can be an alternative to finding lodging at an affordable
price when you are confused about finding a place to stay. In the village there are many
artshops, cafes, traditional markets and bookshops that can complement your tourist
atmosphere. Prawirotaman Village was given the nickname of Kampung Bodypacker or a
tourist village because at any time it was visited by foreign tourists who stayed at hotels
or inns in the region
Artshops lined up along the Prawirotaman area provide unique art pieces. Antique
objects that are quite popular among tourists, one of them is batik stamp. This object is
then used for decoration of wooden house ventilation holes, table leaf ornaments or as
collections because it has artistic value in the form of beautiful batik motif details with a
very valuable historical value of batik. One of the uniqueness in this village is that most
pedicab drivers in this area can speak English, so it is not surprising that there are pedicab
drivers who use the Facebook website that offers services to foreign tourists to drive
around the city of Yogja.

6
Prawirotaman Village is about 5 km from the city of Yogyakarta. To get to this
village, tourists can use private vehicles or public transportation. If tourists use public
buses take the Yogya-Parangtritis route or line 12. If tourists use private vehicles from
the Pojok Beteng area, Wetan goes south, namely Parangtritis road to find a market in the
east of the road. In that area Prawirotaman is located.
