GEC401: ENGINEERING STATISTICS

SOME PRACTICE PROBLEMS ON PROBABILITY

1. A bag contains 7 white, 6 red and 5 black balls. Two balls are drawn at random.
Find the probability that they will both be white. Ans: 7/51

2. A card is drawn from a well-shuffled pack of playing cards. What is the probability
that it is either a spade or an ace? Ans: 4/13

3. An integer is chosen at random from the first two hundred positive integers. What
is the probability that integer chose is divisible by 6 or 8. Ans: 1/4

4. A problem in statistics is given to five students. Their choices of solving it are 1/2,
1/3, 1/4, 1/4 & 1/5 respectively. What is the probability that the problem will be
solved? Ans: 17/20

5. An urn contains nine balls, two of which are red, three blue and four black. Three
balls are drawn from the urn at random. What is the probability that:
I) the three balls are of different colours? Ans: 2/7
II) the three balls are of the same colour? Ans: 5/7

6. A die is thrown three times. Events A and B are defined as below:

A: 4 on the third throw
B: 6 on the first and 4 on second throw
Find the probability of A given that B has already occurred. Ans: 1/6

7. A die is thrown twice and the sum of the numbers appearing is observed to be 6.
What is the conditional probability that the number has occurred at least once?
Ans: 2/5
