Target

Hello learner! In your previous module you have

learned how to explore probability experiments. Did you
have fun answering those activities? Well, this time you
are going to work on different activities. We have lesson
on problem solving as application of your knowledge and
skills on probability. Just concentrate, have fun, put
yourself in each problem, and enjoy solving.

When you are done with this module, you are

expected to attain this learning competency:
• Solves routine and non-routine problems
involving a simple experiment.

Let’s start!
Directions: Read each problem and choose the correct answer
from the box.
1 1 1 1 1 1 1
7 4 5 10 2 6 3

1. A number from 1 to 10 is chosen at random. What is the

probability of choosing any of the numbers?
2. If a die is rolled once, what is the probability that 2 comes
out.

3. What is the probability that a letter E is drawn from a deck

of cards of vowel letters?

4. A spinner has 4 equal sections colored yellow, blue, green

and red. What is the chance of landing on blue after
spinning the spinner?

5. From a set of 7 cards lettered A, B, C, E, I, O, and U. What

is the probability that a letter U is chosen?

6. Jinky is spinning a spinner with 6 equal sections, what is

the probability that she spins a 4 on his next turn?

Problem 1

While Lyndon is waiting for his friend, he is spinning a

spinner like the one shown at the right.
1

2
5

3
4

What is the probability that he spins a 3 on his next turn?

You can solve the problem using the 4-step plan.
UNDERSTAND:
• Know what is asked: The probability of getting a 3 when
Lyndon spins the spinner.
• Know the given facts: There are 6 equal sections in the
spinner.

PLAN:
There are 6 equal sections. One of the sections is labelled
with a 3. Use the formula to find the probability of getting a 3.

number of times an event can occur

P (E) = Total number of outcomes

Where E refers to the event

SOLVE:
IF E is the event of getting a 3, then the formula becomes

1
P (3) = 6

1
The probability that Lyndon can spin a 3 is 6

CHECKED AND LOOK BACK:

• Since the spinner has 6 sections, the probability of
1
occurrence of each section is 6

• Since one of the sections is labeled with a 3, the probability

1
that you spin a 3 is .

Problem 2

Your brother puts 4 black balls and 3 white balls in

a bag. Without looking, what is the probability of drawing
a black ball?
Let’s solve the problem following the steps.

UNDERSTAND:
What is asked?
• The probability of drawing a black ball.
What are given?
• There are 4 black balls and 3 white balls.

PLAN:
What will you do to solve the problem?

Illustrate:
4 black balls 3 white balls

7 balls in all
There are 4 black balls out of 7 balls in all.

Use the formula to find the probability of getting a black ball.

SOLVE:
4
P (Black ball) = 7

4
Answer: The probability of getting a black ball is 7

CHECK AND LOOK BACK:

Since there are 4 black balls out of 7 balls, the probability of
4
occurrence of each black ball is 7.
