short-haul
microwave radios

The Alcatel 9400 AWY family gives a complete range of solutions,

between 7/8 and 38 GHz, as is required to cover the different distances
.
Thanks to their light infrastructure and high compactness, microwave
radios are more advantageous compared to wired lines, because of
their fast and affordable installation as well as their easy turn-on and
operation which allow them to be used by unskilled staff.
The interest and our know how for such product is supported by the
large number of Alcatel 9400 UX family already installed worldwide (
more than 90 countries, for more than 300 customers)
The Alcatel A9400 AWY family is based on technical solutions
providing an homogeneous system design from 7/8 to 38 GHz,
ensuring maximum radio performances in each band.
The design of the equipment is focused on operational flexibility,
providing capacity agility (Indoor Unit frequency and capacity
independent) and wide frequency agility provided by the Outdoor Unit.
The SNMP supervision platform of the Alcatel 9400 AWY family is
compatible with TCP/IP standards and can be used to propose simple
supervision solutions.
The Alcatel 9400 AWY are available with high system gain 4QAM
modulation or high spectrum efficiency 16QAM modulation ( in all
bands) configurable by software with the same hardware .

2 Alcatel short-
haul applications
The Alcatel 9400 AWY family covers the frequency range from 7 to
38GHz, necessary to satisfy the largest range of propagation conditions
as well as network configurations.
It covers the following capacities:
Circuit oriented services :
− ETSI market
• 2x2, 4x2, 8x2, 16x2 Mbit/s,
• 34Mbit/s.

− FCC market
• 4x1.5, 8x1.5, 16x1.5 Mbit/s,
• 45Mbit/s.
Data services
− Ethernet interface
2x10/100BT
The Alcatel 9400 AWY family can be used worldwide in :
• Cellular networks,
• Fixed access networks for Public Telecom or CLECs, including :
− Infrastructure of Wireless IP networks,
− Direct complementary point-to-point access in LMDS
networks,
• Private networks,
• Utility networks, Security/Defense networks…

Typically the distances achieved with 99,999 % of the time of

availability are:
• from 10 to 50km for the 7/8GHz band,
• from 5 to 30km for the microwave frequencies (13 to 18GHz)
• from a few hundred meters up to 10km for the millimeter wave
frequencies (23 to 38GHz)

3DB 06649 AAAA TQZZA 5

Cellular Backhaul Applications :
A major application is related to cellular networks, mainly in urban
and sub-urban areas where an increasing number of small cells are
used to increase the network capacity, leading to a need for a very high
number of radio links inter-connections in the millimeter wave
frequencies (23 to 38 GHz) which are well suited for short distances
and allow to take advantage of increased frequency reuse.
• GSM applications :
Point-to-point microwave is adapted to the BSC to BTS inter-
connections topologies used: star or daisy-chain.

The other applications of Alcatel 9400 AWY are linked to turn-key
offers for CLECs broadband wireless networks
− 9400 AWY is used in networks which are similar to the
standard private networks/business applications of microwave
radios:
In very dense area 9400AWY can be combined with
Alcatel 7390/7385 LMDS family to provide an integrated access
solutions .
The 9400 AWY product provide NxE1/NxDS1 direct
connections (leased lines applications) of subscribers to avoid to
congest the LMDS spectrum in one sector or connection of
subscribers who are out of range of the LMDS cell but whose traffic
does not justify to install a new cell.
− 9400 AWY is used to provide E3/DS3 inter-connections
between Wireless IP base stations or between regional low
traffic potential LMDS base stations, in order to provide a
cost effective infrastructure transmission solution.

The main characteristics/constraints are:

• Ethernet transport over PDH is considered only for the access part
of the network and the only implemented connection is point-to-
point;
• flexible Ethernet throughput.
• mixed mode: data traffic (Ethernet) can be mixed with voice traffic
(up to 8xE1or 8xDS1);
• interface type 10BaseT - 100 BaseT with autonegotiation.
• no MAC address filtering: all what is received from the line is
transmitted. Local traffic can be rerouted only by an external
switch/router.
• bandwidth compression: a mechanism of bandwidth compression
has to be implemented, because the bandwidth of a PDH link is in
general less than the max bandwidth of the Ethernet interfaces.

3.2 System
characteristics
3.2.1 Unprotected configuration
An Alcatel 9400 AWY unprotected (1+0) radio terminal is made
up with the following elements:

• An Outdoor Unit (ODU) incorporating the complete RF

transceiver (modem, RF units, branching filter) and an integrated
or separated antenna.

The ODU is capacity independent

• A Main Indoor Unit (IDU) incorporating the base-band
processing and offering tributaries interfaces as well as service
channel and supervision.
The IDU is frequency independent (same unit from 7 up to
38GHz)
Different IDU configurations are available from factory
An 8 E1/DS1 hardware maximum
configuration which anyway could be
upgraded later by the means of the dedicated
board to 16 E1/DS1 or E3/DS3 Or Ethernet 2x
10/100 BaseT configuration (with also the
appropriate software key see §3.5).
A 16 E1/DS1 hardware configuration
An E3/DS3 hardware configuration
An Ethernet 2X 10/100 baseT allowing to mix
with up to 8E1/DS1 physical input

All those configurations could evaluate to protected

configuration by the simple addition of the missing
hardware ( see § 3.2.2 )

• a single coaxial cable available with lengths up to 300 m.

3.2.2 Protected configurations

Protected configurations are also available :
These configurations allow to protect the most critical transmission
paths or permit to ensure better availability on difficult link
offering radio counter measures. , The following implementations
are available:
(1+1) Hot Stand By with a radio coupler and
one antenna or symmetrical with two
antennas o,
A 1+1 space diversity configuration

A 1+1 frequency diversity configuration

The (1+1) configurations include a multiplex protection(1)

as standard feature and an automatic errorless Rx switching .
If the link is protected, main traffic and auxiliary channels are
automatically protected.

(1) except the Ethernet interface .

3DB 06649 AAAA TQZZA 17

3.3 Equipment
flexibility
Software configurable frequency:
The in-field agility of the 9400 AWY is provided at least on a quarter
frequency plan (synthesizer step 250 kHz). Only up to four different
ODUs are needed to cover the full frequency band.
The synthesized, software controlled, RF local oscillator allows an
easy frequency setting.

Software configurable capacity:

The Alcatel 9400 AWY system provides unique capacity agility
features, controlled by software up to a maximum bit rate.
If the Hardware (and the software key contained on the flash card )
permit it the system capacity can be configured by software , from
2xE1 or 4xDS1 up to the maximum authorized capacity (16xE1/DS1
or E3/DS3 )
Moreover, capacity upgrade can be easily made changing flash
memory associated with software license and/or upgrading the
hardware adding the dedicated plug in board (9 to 16E1/DS1, E3/DS3
or Ethernet ) .

Transmit power control:

In certain cases, the output power of the equipment has to be
decreased, to reduce interferences towards other links in case of very
short hops. This could be done for once when you install the
microwave link from the craft terminal parameters settings (Remote
Transmitter Power Control ), or can be programmed to be done
dynamically by the system to obtain a wanted received level even in
case of changes on the propagation conditions ( Automatic Transmit
Power Control ). Those features improve the flexibility of the network
design and increase the frequency re-use.
The 9400 AWY provide in all frequency bands and modulation :
• a locally software transmit power control RTPC dynamic 30dB
• an automatic transmit power control ATPC dynamic 20dB

Link Identity Coding:

The amount of microwave links, especially in urban areas puts the
problem of possible interferences during installation and turn-on phase.
The digital frame incorporates Link Identity coding capabilities to
prevent the capture of an unwanted signal.

18 3DB 06649 AAAA TQZZA

3.4 Easiness of
installation

The Alcatel 9400 AWY systems have been designed to allow quick
installation and turn-on.

Compact Outdoor Unit:

The Outdoor unit (ODU) is housed in a very compact and robust
weatherproof (IP 67) container; it is designed to be compatible with
hot and very sunny climatic zones.
The Outdoor Unit (1 or 2 depending on the configuration 1+0 or 1+1)
can be rapidly installed on standard poles with an appropriate fastening
system.
9400 AWY family uses a very compact pole mounting equipped with
an accurate alignment system - rough and fine “elevation” and
“bearing” tuning - to permit easy pointing with the integrated antenna.
This pole mounting is the same for 1+0 or 1+1 configurations from 11
to 38GHz .
The 9400 AWY outdoor unit can be used with an integrated antenna
300 or 600 mm diameter or separate antennas if a larger diameter is
needed.
The ODU is fixed by means of quick latches. This system allows to
change the ODU without altering the antenna alignment
The alignment of the antenna can be easily performed with the use of a
dedicated service kit. This kit , when connected to the ODU, is able to
provide the receive signal level, and the connection to the other end of
the link through a telephone service channel (when applicable).

Different IDU mechanical versions:

The IDU dimensions are 1U for the 1+0 configuration and 2 times
1U for 1+1 high for all capacities. This allow easy installation in
standard 19” or ETSI/N3 racks and saves a lot of space where there are
tight constraints like shelters

The IDU can also be installed as a desktop unit.

The design of the 1+1 configuration permit the replacement of a faulty

Unit (Main IDU or extension IDU ) without any disconnection of
tributaries so no interruption of the traffic.

Single coaxial cable:

A single coaxial cable of up to 300 m achieves the connection between
the ODU and the IDU, so that a high flexibility is left for locating the
radio and antenna.

3DB 06649 AAAA TQZZA 19

Simple commissioning:
All the standard Site Acceptance Tests can be done with a single PC to
commission the link, making extensive use of built-in supervision
features :
• Continuous performance check and alarm status overview
• numerous base-band loop-back facilities
• Built-in PRBS generator and error counters
The transmit side incorporates a built-in PRBS (Pseudo Random Bit
Sequence) generator able to insert a standard test signal for the link Bit
Error Rate measurements, in order to facilitate initial turn-on.
This is by means of craft terminal software .
3.5 Equipment Software
features
The Alcatel 9400 AWY terminal provides:
• interface RS232C to a PC (Craft Terminal), which enables alarm
monitoring, quality measurement, as well configuration of the
equipment
• one interface to a higher NMS level :
− Ethernet 10/100 base T
− hierarchical management structure based on the Simple
Network Management Protocol (SNMP), which can manage
the 9400 AWY equipment
• embedded data communication channel for management
information 64kbit/s with RS422/G703 interface
3.6 Reliable design
The high reliability of the indoor and outdoor equipment is obtained
through the use of advanced technologies, highly qualified components
and severe test procedures in factory.
The high value of the MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) limits the
maintenance to routine visits.
The equipment operational MTBF traffic affecting reaches more than
30 years.

Digital Cable Interface
The cable interface between IDU and ODU allows to carry over the
coaxial cable:
• the transmit and receive data streams (and interface these streams
to the modem on ODU side),
• the control signals and service channel.
• the DC power supply from the IDU to the ODU

Modem and IF unit

The modem performs the 4 QAM or 16QAM modulation and
demodulation functions, with embedded digital filtering and
equalization. It also incorporates the analog to digital and digital to
analog conversions.
The IF part incorporates the quadrature modulator (respectively the
quadrature demodulator) for the up-conversion (respectively down-
conversion) to a transmit IF (respectively from a receive IF). It
performs base-band filtering and AGC.
IF frequencies are variable in order to cope with all frequency spacing .

RF Local Oscillator (LO)

There is one single Local Oscillator both for transmit and receive RF
units.
It is electronically tuned, by software, to the requested frequency,
providing frequency agility over a quarter of frequency plan.

Front End
• RF transmitter (Tx)
This module up-converts and amplifies the RF signal and sends it to
the duplexer.
The output power is regulated with a feedback loop.
The module incorporates a mute function in case of transmitter failure.

• RF Receiver (Rx)
The receiver performs low noise amplification of the received RF
signal and down-converts it by mixing with the LO in a mixer. It feeds
the IF resulting signal to the IF module.

22 3DB 06649 AAAA TQZZA

Branching
The duplexer separates the transmit and receive signals at the RF
antenna port.

Power supply
The power supply provides DC/DC conversion to generate the
secondary voltages from the remote supply voltage. It interfaces with
all active modules of the transceiver.

Monitoring
This feature provides monitoring of Outdoor Unit configuration and
alarms.
The ODU of the Alcatel 9400 AWY features are :
• Transmit Power Control :
a software controlled attenuation of up to
30 dB in static power control
or 20dB in ATPC
can be applied.

• RF local loop
The ODU is provided with an RF local loop, permanently
installed within the container. This function allows to loop back
the RF signal from the transmitter to the receiver of the same
transceiver after frequency conversion, in order to test the
installed local terminal without using the antenna or the remote-
end terminal.

4.2 ODU configurations

ODU can operate with :

3DB 06649 AAAA TQZZA 23

• integrated antenna of 30cm or 60cm
• separated antenna if larger diameters are necessary. In this case,
the antenna is interconnected by the means of an adaptor (pole
mounting for external antenna ) and a flextwist directly to the
ODU, or the coupler, depending on used configuration.

For the outdoor part, different 1+1 configuration can be realized:

− HSB with 2 antennas in the same polarization: this
configuration could be use for Space Diversity counter
measure ( in this case the antennas separation should be
higher than 10 wave lengths ) or as simple HSB (with the
two antennas collocated ) as it improves the link budget
avoiding coupler losses on the stand-by path (useful when
integrated antennas are needed).
− HSB with a 10 dB coupler and 1 antenna : this configuration
optimizes the infrastructure using only one antenna, a 10dB
coupling has been chosen to minimize the losses on the
normal path.
− HSB configuration is also available with a 3dB coupler and 1
antenna
− With 2 antennas with different polarization : in this case the
two ODU will transmit at the same frequency ( in 4 QAM
only ) in the same time (identical to frequency diversity) and
will permit an hitless switching in both direction in case of
failure
− with 2 external antennas adaptors and 1 dual polarized
antenna : to permit the same behavior than in the previous
chapter when the gain of integrated antennas are not
sufficient or to optimize the number of antennas on a pole.

5 User Interface
Alcatel 9400 AWY
indoor unit (IDU)

5.1 IDU Functional

Description

Indoor Unit (IDU) performs all customer interface needs both as voice
and data respectively
• NxE1/E3 for ETSI market
• NxDS1/DS3 for US market
• 10/100 BT Ethernet/fast Ethernet
• EOW
• service channel
• OS-TMN
and feeds the Outdoor Unit (ODU) via a single coaxial cable carrying
on
• Base Band Transmission Signal (from IDU vs ODU)
• Base Band Receiver Signal (from ODU vs IDU)
• ODU Supply Voltage

2 different IDUs are needed to built all the configuration 1+0 & 1+1 :
• A Main IDU : which is only one needed for 1+0 configuration
and will be the base for the 1+1 configurations. This IDU main
could be ordered in 4 different configurations all expandable to
1+1 with the addition of an extension IDU and all able to be
transformed to an other introducing the dedicated plug-in board
(or unplugged one ). The four possible configurations are :
The basic Main with only 8E1/DS1 interfaces :

The Main with up to 16E1/DS1 interfaces :

The main IDU with Ethernet connections :

The main IDU with E3/DS3 connection :

• An extension IDU : which permit with the addition of the

appropriate cables to obtain all the 1+1 configurations. For this
raison it is available in four configurations duals from the ones
from the main IDU.

The Main IDU performs all the following functions:

Multiplex/Demultiplex of the Tributaries signals insertion/extraction
from the main stream of the following signals:
• EOW
• Service Channel
• Network Management System
• ATPC control signal
• Data stream(In the case of the use of dedicated plug-in board)
The Multiplexed/Demultiplexed signal toward the ODU interface is
Framed/unframed implementing the following processes:
• Scrambler/Descrambler
• Coding/Decoding (Reed-Solomon) +Interleaving
Cable Interface circuit adds at this signal the ODU supply voltage and
feed the “N” connector available on the front panel of the board.

Flash Card , removable by the back of the IDU, store configuration of

the terminal as well as the software key permitting or not the use of all
the hardware possibilities. It is always possible to upgrade this set of
maximum features available by changing the software key

Extension IDU performs all the following functions:

Hitless Equipment Protection Switch. permitting to have Rx errorless
switch in protected configuration.
Multiplex/Demultiplex of the Tributaries signals, insertion/extraction
from the main stream the following signals:
• EOW
• Service Channel
• Network Management System
• ATPC control signal
• Data stream(depending of the us of the plug In)

The Multiplexed/Demultiplexed signal moving versus the ODU
interface is framed /unframed throws the functions:
• Scrambled / descrambled
• Coding/Decoding (Reed-Solomon)
+Interleaving
The Cable Interface circuit adds at this signal the ODU supply voltage
and feed the “N” connector available on the front panel of the Unit.

5.2 Functional details

about data and
PDH mux/demux

Two functions play an essential role in the Ethernet data transport: the
standard PDH mux/demux and the data encapsulation/buffering.
The two functions have been decoupled as much as possible:
• the standard PDH mux/demux offers a transport capability to the
data traffic
• the data encapsulation/buffering uses the transport capability
offered by the mux, but doesn’t know what is the current mux
type/frame.

3DB 06649 AAAA TQZZA 27

The nxE1/DS1 Framing block is implemented into the Mux/demux.
The Ethernet Data Encapsulation block is implemented into the Data
plug-in.
The connection between the two functions is simply realized with three
wires:
• Data valid: Mux/dem tells to Ethernet Data when it is possible to
insert Ethernet data into the PDH frame
• Frame bit CLK: the clock for the transmission of Ethernet bits;
• Data: Ethernet bits to be inserted into the PDH frame.

The design of the PDH Mux is completely decoupled from the

encapsulation strategy of the Ethernet Data;
It is easily possible to implement any combination of voice (E1, DS1)
and data with the limitation that we have only Height physical inputs
for E1/DS1.

5.2.1 Bandwidth
compression

A compression mechanism has to be foreseen, because -with a Fast

Ethernet interface- the PDH transport capability is always less than
the maximum input bit rate
Note also that with a 10BaseT input interface the PDH transport
capability can be sometimes larger and sometimes smaller than the
maximum input bit rate.
Given a gross bit rate at the output of the Mux, several possible
combination of voice and data(2x10/100Base T) are available.
In the following drawing a few examples of band allocation to data
transmission with compression technique is shown.

6 Alcatel 9400 AWY
System
Configurations
The 9400AWY family offers unprotected (1+0) and protected (1+1)
configurations.
Two types of problem can impact the availability of a radio link :
equipment failures and propagation problems.
1+1 protected configurations are used to increase the availability of the
link compared to 1+0 unprotected configuration, by adding redundant
functions to the equipment:
• To secure the link in case of temporary (transient alarm) or
definitive (equipment failure) malfunctioning,
• To improve the performances of the equipment towards
propagation problem (in some outdoor units configurations only).
Various configurations are available with the following applications:

7 Supervisory
system
The Alcatel 9400 Terminal features very advanced supervisory
functions which are optimized for operation and maintenance, offering
solutions from very small to very large networks in an evolutionary
path :
• for local management of a single link (local and remote
equipment), a F interface to a craft terminal (ECT) is provided,
allowing diagnostic and configuration of the network elements
through a user friendly man-machine interface (Windows™
environment),
• for small to medium sized networks, from isolated radio hops up
to networks composed of maximum 128 radio equipment, based
on RECT
• for more complex networks composed of numerous PDH and
SDH radio links integrated in a transport network a global solution
is proposed, operating with one or more Operation Systems on
workstations (cf. 1353NM documentation), with network
management capabilities in a various field of fault locations,
performance measurements, configuration and security
management.

7.1 Network
management
protocols
The network management protocol offered is :

3DB 06649 AAAA TQZZA 33

SNMP protocol:
ALCATEL proposes a concept of NMS to manage the 9400 AWY
Indoor-Outdoor equipment, using a hierarchical management
structure (Management Information Base MIB) based on the Simple
Network Management Protocol (SNMP).
The ALCATEL 9400 AWY SNMP Terminals exhibit the main
following advantages :
• Open protocol :
It provides a standardized open protocol ; its management
interface allowing management by other OS vendors or
integration in Alcatel TMN through a TCP-IP data
communication network.
• Re-routing capability :
It benefits of the TCP-IP re-routing capability even in the
standalone management solution.
This means that the Supervision Bus can be looped or meshed
(and it is recommended to do so when it is possible) via NMS
interfaces, using a dedicated Service Channel of the Transmission
Equipment or external leased lines (synchronous RS485/V11 at
64 Kbit/s) or using a time slot of E1/DS1tributary .

7.2 Network
management
solutions

7.2.1 Local monitoring

The local craft terminal (ECT) allows to access to different domains
given hereafter :
• Configuration
• Diagnosis
• Equipment
• External points
• Line interface
• Performance
• Radio
• Protection Schemes
• Loop back
• Software Download

These domains accessibility depends on the operator’s profiles :

• Administrator /Constructor : Full
• Operator : Read only or full
• Viewer : Read only
To facilitate the system configuration to the operator , a Wizard tool is
used ; this tool could be activated from the menu bar .

Some screens related to different domains are given hereafter :

networks : RECT
For networks up to 128 Network Elements (called a cluster), a stand-
alone solution based on RECT functionality is proposed. It allows to
access the remote NE display the global synthesis view as well as the
NE view of each equipment of the cluster (as described here-above).
All applications available in the local management chapter
are available for each Network Element of the Cluster
The view given hereafter indicates that :
− it is possible to have a Map composed up to 128NE
− this view is available for each NE , each submap and each
Map
− for each selected NE (on the left) there is the indication on the
right of how many alarm are active (2 Major, 2 Minor, 1
Warning); the status of the single NE (Major alarm) is
propagated to the superior Submap till to Map.
− It is possible to execute the “Log in” command to have a
further zoom inside the NE

38 3DB 06649 AAAA TQZZA

7.2.3 Large mixed network :
TMN
For large/mixed networks composed of 9400 AWY SNMP terminals,
associated with other types of equipment, 2 types of application are
proposed :
• The first application is the one allowing the Customer, who wants
to have a multi-vendor environment at the Network Element level,
to homogenize the NE interface, whoever the equipment provider
is.
• The second application is the one where the full NMS is provided
by ALCATEL. The 9400 AWY SNMP terminals will be managed
by the ALCATEL Operation System 1353NM together with other
type of NE’s (SDH radios, ADM ) even if they are using different
protocols as Q3 .
The 1353NM provides real time monitoring and controls of all
Network Elements entering in the configuration of the managed
network.
The following picture illustrates the two applications proposed for the
management of the ALCATEL 9400 AWY/SNMP equipment.
