CAT 1 Folio - Making sense of your world through Instrumental Drawing

Throughout the course of this folio, your teacher will introduce you to a range
of drawing systems that design professionals use to describe and design the
world around you.

Achieving this accurately is part of the skill set that you are learning throughout this folio of
drawings and it can take some practice to gain confidence.

The second part we are going to practice is learning how to measure accurately. This is
important skill if you are trying to represent a 3 Dimensional object especially if you would
propose to make it.

The drawing systems and folio pieces are:-

Orthogonal Drawing

Through classroom exercises, your teacher will introduce

you to the Orthogonal drawing system first. You may be
familiar to this concept when you think of what architect do
to describe plan and elevation views of buildings. These
drawings remove any look of depth and only describe in
height and width. Often they are presented as a group of 2
or 3 drawings plan, front elevation and side elevation. The
grouping of 2 to 3 views helps explains the 3 dimensional
data to describe the object or construction.

Paraline Drawing
Through classroom exercises, your teacher will introduce you to paraline drawing systems.
They are named paraline as they simulate the 3rd dimension by using lines receding in parallel to
either a 45 or 30 degree angle. You will notice that set- squares have angles set at either 45 or 30
degree angles. The drawing systems we will cover here are Planometric (set at 45 degrees) and
Isometric (set at 30 degrees). This drawing system suits describing small objects like electrical
appliances etc.

Planometric drawing (lines of recession set at 45 degrees)

Through classroom exercises, your teacher will introduce you to

the Planometric drawing system. Through classroom exercise
where you will draw accurate several given object using the
Planometric drawing system. You will be the same objects or
construction drawn in the Orthogonal drawing exercises so you
can get a greater understanding of what happens when you
describe the same object using different drawing systems.
Isometric drawing (lines of recession set at 30
degrees)

Through classroom exercises, your teacher will

introduce you to the Isometric drawing system.
Through classroom exercise where you will draw
accurate several given object using the Isometric
drawing system. The first drawing will get you to
draw cubes in Isometric. After that you will attempt
an Isometric Maze. There will a third exercise that
will get you to add detail and be more creative
drawing the interior and exterior of a Bungalow.

Perspective Drawing
Through classroom exercises, your teacher will introduce you to One and Two point perspective
drawing. These drawing systems use vanishing points set by the drawer to get lines of recession
to converge towards to simulate the 3rd dimension. This drawing system suits describing large
objects or constructions like buildings etc.

Two Point Perspective drawing

Through classroom exercises, your teacher will

introduce you to the Two Point Perspective
drawing system. You will start by doing some
cubes flying in space and in the next, you will
draw a suburban street view.

One Point Perspective drawing

Through classroom exercises, your teacher will
introduce you to the One Point Perspective
drawing system. You will start by doing an
interior view of a building using the one point
perspective.
