Calculations for Redox Titration Lab

Part I

Calculate Molarity of Na2C2O4 grams to moles then moles divided by volume (L)

1.065 g was weighed out then dissolved in 100.00 mL (0.1 L)

Part II Molarity of KMnO4

10.00 mL of Na2C2 O4 went into titration – determine moles of Na2C2 O4 from volume and
molarity (Part I)

10.00 mL is equal to 0.01000 L

0.07948 moles/L x 0.01000 L = 0.0007948 moles of Na2C2O4 went into the titration

Use moles of Na2C2 O4 to determine moles of KMnO4 using balanced equation.

Oxalate is in acidic form because we added sulfuric acid (H2SO4) to the titration.
2 moles MnO 4 −
0.0007948 moles Na 2C 2O 4 x = 0.0003178 moles MnO 4 −
5 moles H 2C 2O 4

0.000318 moles MnO4

Divide moles of KMnO4 by volume (average) of KMnO4 used in titration

Now you have molarity of KMnO4

Part III Percent Purity of K3Fe(C2O4)3

To determine percent purity you are going do first determine the moles of K3Fe(C2O4)3 based on
titration then based on calculation and compare the two values.

1. Moles of K3Fe(C2O4)3 based on titration.

Use the volume of KMnO4 (average) from your titration (Part III) and the molarity of KMnO4
(Part II) to determine how many moles of KMnO4 you used in the titration.

Convert moles of KMnO4 to moles of K3Fe(C2O4)3 using the second balanced equation

Now you have the experimental moles of K3Fe(C2O4)3.

2. Moles of K3Fe(C2O4)3 based on calculation.

To calculate the moles of K3Fe(C2O4)3 determine the concentration of the solution you made
(moles/volume)

1.555 g was weighed out then dissolved in 100.00 mL (0.1 L)

Remember that you only used 10.00 mL in your titration Molarity x volume = moles

0.0317 moles/L x 0.01 L = 0.000317 moles K3Fe(C2O4)3 based on calculation.
