PART- B

1. Derive the Fourier law of Heat conduction equation for Hollow cylinder.
2. Derive the Fourier law of Heat conduction equation for Sphere.
3. A steel pipe of 170mm inner dia and 190 mm outer dia with thermal conductivity 55 W/mK is covered with two
layers of insulation. The thickness of the first layer is 25mm (K=0.1 W/mK) and the second layer thickness is
40 mm (K=0.18 W/mK). The temperature of the steam and inner surface of the steam pipe is 320 oC and outer
surface of the insulation is 80oC. ambient air temperature is 25oC. the surface co-efficient for inside and outside
surfaces are 230 W/m2K and 6 W/m2K respectively. Determine the heat loss per meter length of the steam pipe
and layer of contact temperatures and also calculate the overall heat transfer co-efficient.
4. Air at 900C flows in a copper tube of 5 cm inner dia with thermal conductivity 380 W/mK and with 0.7 cm thick
wall which is heated from the outside by water at 1200C. A scale of 0.4 cm thick is deposited on the outer
surface of the tube whose thermal conductivity is 1.82 W/mK. The air and water side unit surface conductance
are 220 W/m2K and 3650 W/m2K respectively. Calculate
1. Overall water to air transmittance.
2. Water to air heat exchange.
3. Temperature drop across the scale deposit.
5. A hollow cylinder 5 cm inner dia and 10cm outer dia has inner surface temperature of 2000C and outer surface
temperature of 1000C. determine heat flow through the cylinder per meteer length also determine the
temperature of the point half way between the inner and outer surfaces. Take K=1W/mK.
