ASSIGNMENT ON STUDY OF TRANSITION SPACES

Introduction:

Transition spaces are defined as a link space between two enclosed spaces. Transition spaces in the form of corridors, atriums, stairwells and
other circulation spaces are integral part of design in most of the buildings. Most of the time users have a psychological experience, but are
unaware of the presence of such spaces.

The percentage of these spaces may vary according to the function / type of building. Their functionality also varies accordingly to the
appropriate requirement of the building.

Objective:

The objective of the vacation Assignment aims to explore the following factors of the Transition spaces.

 Influence of Transition space as buffer zone.

 Degree of enclosure/levels/lighting
 The Hierarchy in a Transition space can be at a building level- Transition between/with- in the buildings.
 Direction- Axis , Focus, configurations
 Surface Articulation
 Qualities such as – Permeability (Density of connection), Transparency, Human scale etc..
 Its Typologies such as – Entrances and Lobbies, Courtyards, Staircases, Corridors, Plazas, etc..

Students shall study and analyze all these with Literature and Live case examples which shall help them through their Design Process.

Deliverables: (with the help of a Minimum of 3 case examples)

The study and analysis on Transition Spaces in buildings shall be supported with the following deliverables
to understand its architectural values and its influence in the built space with the help of a Minimum of 3 case examples by Famous Architects.

 A brief Introduction on the Case Example

 The Principles and Ideologies devised by the Architect for the Effective usage of such spaces in the Design
 Plans (at an appropriate Readable scale)
A)Master Plan to Understand the Transition in Zoning of Blocks/Buildings at Site Level
B)Block /Building Plan to understand the transition spaces within a building/Block
 Appropriate Sections (in the same scale as the Plan) relevant to the study intended.
 Questionnaires/Surveys that can be collected during Live case study from the Educational Tour
 Sketches /Models compatible to the Study
 Guidelines and Inferences from the Study

Submission:

 The Date of Submission shall be the January 21st , 2019.

 The Format for the Submission shall be a minimum of - A3 format and can go up to A0 Format size.
 The medium of presentation of study shall be Manual / Digital or Both .
