RECREATIONAL DANCES : HIPHOP

HISTORY OF HIPHOP

 Hip-hop dance originated in Black and Latino communities in both New York City and California in the
1960s and 1970s.
 In the street corners of slightly impoverished African-American and Latino neighborhoods, kids found a
way to break the gloom and the monotony by bringing out beat boxes
and staging dance showdowns, or battles, amongst each other.
 Any kind of moves were appreciated, and unorthodox moves like spinning on the head and
slamming against the ground became synonymous with the music.

Clive Campbell / DJ Kool Herc

 Originated hip hop music in the early–1970s in The Bronx, New York City. Known as the "Founder of Hip-
Hop" and "Father of Hip-Hop"

DIFFERENT STYLES OF HIPHOP

1. Breaking. One of the first pillars of the original hip hop movement. It is traditionally done within a circle or
cypher where b-boys will execute their dances moves.
2. Popping. Often done standing up, in which the body is twitched or jerked in a way that goes with the
beat. These twitches are called “pops” or “hits.” ex. Moonwalk
3. Locking. Characterized by sudden pauses or freezes, often in jive with the beat. Originating way back into
1969 as popularized by Campbellock Campbell and his crew, The Lockers.
4. Boogaloo. A very loose movement, mostly using the hips and legs. This style is closely related to popping,
with dancers involved in rolling the hips, knees, legs, and head.
5. Krumping. It is very improvisational and expressive. It has four basic moves: jabs, arm swings, chest pops,
and stomps
6. Floating. Emphasizes slick ‘floating’ movements that gives the impression that the dancer is dancing in the
air. Its three basic moves are ‘the float,’ ‘gliding,’ and ‘sliding.
