Beginner Instrumental Lesson Plan for Ode to Music

Known:
Students can play with good posture, and instrument playing position.
Students can play a range of 5 notes in concert C. (C-G)
Students can play notes in stepwise patterns.
Students know quarter notes, half notes and eighth notes.
Students know solfege.
Students know the rhythm system: do, and day for quarters, halves and eighth notes.

Goals:
1. Students will be able to play Ode to Joy with correct notes and rhythms.
2. Students will be able to play the dotted quarter, eighth rhythm.

Objectives:
1. Students will be able to play stepwise tonal patterns from concert C-G.
2. Students will be able to play starting on Mi.
3. Students will be able to say the rhythm on our known counting system.
4. Students will be able to solfege with correct pitch and rhythm.
5. Students will be able to sing the song with the lyrics.
6. Students will be able to play the 8 bar melody with correct notes and rhythm.

Teaching Sequence: All by rote, not using sheet music until after learned.
1. Echo simple rhythm patterns with quarters and eighth notes, and half notes.
1. hh, qqqq, eeeeeeee, qqeeq, qeeqq, {eeeeqq, jeqq} jeh.
2. Play rhythms, and echo with solfege with rhythms making sure to keep stepwise motion,
starting on do, mi, and sol, and moving on the and of 2 when appropriate.
1. qqqq, qqqee, qqeeq, qeeqq, qeeh, eeeeqq, eeeeh, jeqq, jeh.
3. Same sequence as with solfege, but now playing instruments.
4. Play bar 1.
1. Have students sing on solfege
2. Have students play on instruments.
5. Repeat step 4 with bar 2.
6. Put two bars together playing.
7. Repeat steps 4 - 6 with bars 3-4.
8. Put bars 1-4 together.
9. Play bars 5 + 6.
1. Ask are the the same?
2. Have students play.
10. Play bars 7 + 8.
1. Ask are they the same or different.

2. Play bar 8.
1. Have students sing solfege and then play.
11.Play second half all the way through.
12. Teach lyrics in parts.
13. Sing entire song with lyrics.
14.Play entire song.

Materials: Ode to Music sheet music, piano (or other band instruments)

Assessment: Formative Assessment:
Have students play in groups of 2-4 (depending on size of band). Go around the band having
each group playing one measure and then moving on to the next group (train exercise). Repeat
song a few times.
