CTG Application, Tracing and Reading

Instructions for use:
- Head Nurse / Clinical Nurse Educator: Please tick applicable box next to each step if the staff proves
competent; if not fill in the box with (NR) meaning needs remediation. The staff must complete
successfully all steps of the competency prior solo practice.
- If the staff does not complete all steps successfully, he/ she must receive remediation, with note of the skill/
step that needs remediation.

Assessment
1. Define Cardio Tocograhic Monitoring?
2. What is the Normal Fetal heart rate?
3. Use of transducer device:
a.) Tocodynomamometer- to monitor
uterine contractions
b.) Ultrasound device- monitor fetal heart
rate
Performance Skills/ Phase
1. Ask the patient to empty the bladder
2. Label the tracing with patient ID STICKER
3. Place the patient in supine position placing
two transducer belt at the bed.
4. Apply the transducer device:
a.) Toco must be placed over the fundus
b.) Ultrasound device must be placed on
the area with loudest spot.
5. Explain to the mother to push the button
when she feels fetal movement.
6. Reposition of the patient as per Doctor’s
order.
Interpretation of CTG reading
1. Recognize Fetal Heart Abnormalities
a.) Early deceleration
b.) Late deceleration
c.) Variable deceleration
d.) Fetal bradycardia
e.) Fetal Tachycardia
2. Relay any abnormalities noted on CTG
result to OB Gyne doctor.
