What is Data?
- is a set of values of subjects with respect to qualitative or quantitative variables.
- Data and information or knowledge are often used interchangeably; however data
becomes information when it is viewed in context or in post-analysis. While the concept
of data is commonly associated with scientific research, data is collected by a huge range
of organizations and institutions, including businesses (e.g., sales data, revenue,
profits, stock price), governments (e.g., crime rates, unemployment rates, literacy rates)
and non-governmental organizations (e.g., censuses of the number of homeless people by
non-profit organizations).
What is Information?
- is the resolution of uncertainty; it is that which answers the question of "what an entity
is" and thus defines both its essence and nature of its characteristics. Information relates
to both data and knowledge, as data represents values attributed to parameters, and
knowledge signifies understanding of a concept. Information is uncoupled from an
observer, which is an entity that can access information and thus discern what it
specifies; information may exist beyond an event horizon, for example. In the case of
knowledge, the information itself requires a cognitive observer to be obtained.
What is Knowledge?
- is a familiarity, awareness, or understanding of someone or something, such
as facts, information, descriptions, or skills, which is acquired
through experience or education by perceiving, discovering, or learning.
What is Database?
- is an organized collection of data, generally stored and accessed electronically from a
computer system. Where databases are more complex they are often developed using
formal design and modeling techniques.
What is DBMS?
- is a system software for creating and managing databases. The DBMS provides users and
programmers with a systematic way to create, retrieve, update and manage data.A DBMS
makes it possible for end users to create, read, update and delete data in a database. The
DBMS essentially serves as an interface between the database and end users or
application programs, ensuring that data is consistently organized and remains easily
accessible.
Roles of Database Management System
- Data management system is needed for data access within the company
- It is needed to maintain strong relationships between data
- This system allows newer and better updates
- It helps brand managers to search data in a better manner
Advantages of Database Management System
- Improved data sharing - Improved decision making
- Improved data security - Increased end-user productivity
- Better data integration
- Minimized data inconsistency
- Improved data access
