THE EFFECTS OF HAVING AN OPPOSITE-SEX FRIENDS WHILE IN A

ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIP

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

They say a stranger stabs you in the front, a friend stabs you in the back; a lover stabs you in
the heart, but best friends only poke each other with straws. Some nice words that when we ponder on
them as they make us hold on to those people we consider close friends.

The purpose of this research is to provide knowledge and to know about the effects of having
an opposite-sex friends while in a romantic relationship of the Senior Highschool Students in Alicia
National High School.

This Study can be your guide on your way of life. The researcher can acquire learnings that can
apply in our life. The researcher will study about having an opposite-sex while in a romantic relationship.
The researcher will help you learn how to balance and manage the Time between your relationship and
Friendship. The researcher aim to reach out to all teenagers to tell and to explain to them what will be
the outcome of having a Opposite sex while in a romantic relationship. This study will figure out many
effects that may lead you positive or negative outcomes that is useful to the students Themselves.

Despite trying to differentiate between friendships and relationships, we often make the
mistake of placing the same value to our partners to that of our friends. We clearly do not see how this
can, or does negatively affect our love life. Linda Mgwadira, a student at National College of Information
and Communication Technology (Nacit) in Blantyre says it is okay to have friends of the opposite sex
when one is in a relationship as there is no harm in doing so. She says what matters is how one conducts
himself/herself when they are in such circumstances. Fred Kantande, a second-year student at College of
Medicine in Blantyre, however, says it is not proper for people in relationships to have friends of the
opposite sex as it leads to loss of value of the relationship at hand. Chancellor College sociologist Charles
Chilimampunga, says it is harmless in having friends of the opposite sex while in a relationship despite
there being challenges that can come as a result of such friendships. He says it is socially acceptable for a
male or female to have friends of the opposite sex outside relationships, but emphasises that things
have to remain on the friendship level and not more than that.

Some maintained friendships with the opposite sex while in a relationship, but for some
people, their partner's friendships can turn into relationships, and then there are other people who
insist their partner shouldn't have any friendships with the opposite sex at all. Figuring out what is
healthy and what's risky can help couples come to terms with their own insecurities and discover new
strengths.
 Many of the Students of Alicia National highschool has engaging in romantic relationship. People
nowadays, has boyfriend!/ Girlfriend and some of the reason of their breakup is because of their
opposite -sex friend. There’s evidences showing that having an opposite-sex friend had an effect to the
relationship. Therefore, the researchers decided to conduct a study about the effects of having an
opposite-sex friends while engaging in romantic relationship in Senior High School at Alicia National High
School.

METHOD AND PROCEDURES

Research Design and Methodology

The researchers will use descriptive design to conduct study entitled “The Effect of

Social Media on the Academic Performances of ABM 12 S.Y 2018-2019.

Survey questionnaire, interview and Field notes will also be used in the study .

Selection Criteria and Participant

The respondents are 20 students that Are selected in Senior High School of Alicia

National High School. Both male and female, transferee, old student, that are engaging in

romantic relationship.

Data Collection

In this study, Interview, Observation and questionnaire will use as the main instrument

of the study to determine the effects of having an opposite-sex friends while in romantic

relationship in Alicia National High School S. Y 2019-2020.

Survey questionnaire- this was employed to collect information regarding the subjects and

effect of having an opposite-sex friends while engaging in a romantic relationship in Senior

Highschool of Alicia National High School.

Interview- researcher use this strategy to collect more information in one-one / personal Conversation.

observations- researcher intend to Observe the behavior of having an opposite-sex friends while in a

relationship.

Data Gathering Procedures

The researcher asked permission to conduct a survey, after approval, the researchers

will conduct the survey during vacant time of the respondents, the researchers will randomly

choose all students who has in a romantic relationship in Senior High School to complete the

respondents.

After the survey, the responses will tallied, analyzed and interpreted accordance to the

items found in instruments.

ETHICAL CONSIDERATION

Humans have diverse role in society. The role playing defines their role in society. With each

social role, one adopts one’s behaviour changes befitting the expectation of one’s own self and of others
(Reddy, et, al., 2015). Ethics is related to the concepts like right or wrong, or good or bad human

behaviour in different social and organizational settings. In specific term, it is set of criteria by which the

decisions are being made about what is wrong (Gower, 2003).

Many things should consider to this study, first is their personal information or Confidential

information . We the researcher will promise to keep the information of the respondents.
