Community College does
not have a policy to hire

tary of Transportation, Julie
Lorenz, announced eight
local consultation meetings
in several state communities
to discuss the new Kansas
Long-Range Transportation
Plan that replaces the previ-
ous T-Works program elimi-
nated by past Republican
Governor Sam Brownback.
“These meetings are
an important opportunity
for stakeholders to share
information about needed
transportation projects, and
help shape the future of
transportation in Kansas,”
Lorenz said in an email sent
to the Kansas Media.
According to Lorenz, during
a joint legislative transporta-
tion vision taskforce meet-
ing, last fall, the participants
testified about project needs
in Kansas communities that
totaled more than $18 bil-

President
The Dodge City Area Cham-
ber of Commerce has a new
President and Chief Execu-
tive Officer: Anna Bjerken.
She was born in Leoti, Kan-
sas and then called Alaska
home for many years of her
childhood and beginning of
her post-collegiate career.
In 2016, Bjerken, her hus-
band Corey, and son Lincoln
rooted their lives in Dodge
City. She is a graduate of
Dodge City High School
and Dodge City Community
College. She obtained her
Master Degree in Business
Administration after complet-
ing her Bachelor Degree in
Medical Diagnostic Imaging
from Fort Hays State Univer-
sity. Following a clinical posi-
tion at a hospital in Alaska,
Bjerken managed the largest
privately-owned medical
practice group in Wasilla.
Bjerken has worked in the
medical field for both West-
ern Plains Medical Complex
and Century Health.
“Over the past three years,
the Chamber Board of Direc-
tors and staff have worked
hard to create a new identity
for our organization,” said
Michael Burns, Chairman of
the Board of Directors. “Find-
ing a driven, community-
oriented leader that would
continue our momentum
was a top priority.”

Chamber and be influen-
tial in nurturing a healthy

Desayunos Y Almuerzos Escolares
La Oficina de Información Pública del Distrito Escolar de Dodge City informó que varias
escuelas recibieron subsidios para los comedores escolares. La escuela Linn recibió un sub-

documento ahora es más
largo, tomando de 6 a 8
meses y medio. Debido a

trabajos, porque la espera
es larga.
Feltman aconsejó renovar
los permisos de trabajo a

TRiO Student Support
Services, a Dodge City Com-
munity College program
designed to help specific
students who often struggle
in higher education, report-
ed high rates of success in
2018. This program provides
mentoring for nearly 150
students at DC3 who are
first-generation college stu-
dents, are from low-income
families, or have disabilities.
The program has seen
steadily rising student suc-
cess rates, including this
year’s 94 percent of stu-
dents participating in the
program in good academic
standing and 88 percent
either graduating or return-
ing to school the next year,
what the government calls
the “persistence rate.”
Analysis shows that stu-
dents who are the first in
their family to go to college
are often less prepared
for the rigors of college.
Researchers agree that
first-generation college
students are at a disadvan-
tage. Studies have found a
gap between what first-gen
students expect from col-
lege and the reality that hits
them once they’re enrolled.
The college program bridges
that gap for many students.
TRiO provides eligible DC3
students with a centralized
location for assistance with
just about every facet of col-
lege life.
“First-generation students
don’t have a parent or sib-
ling who’s navigated college
life. There are lots of details
they can miss, simply be-
cause they aren’t aware all
of their resources,” said DC3
President Harold Nolte.
Vanessa Hernandez from
Dodge City started her col-
lege journey as a freshman
at DC3. She is the first per-
son from her family to attend
college. “When I first started,
I really didn’t know where to
go to even get started,” Van-
essa said. “I was nervous,
very nervous,” she said.
Vanessa transferred to a
technical college in Manhat-
tan after her first semester,
seeking a big-city experi-
ence, but soon returned to
Dodge City. She discovered
that bigger doesn’t always
mean better.
The staff of TRiO has
helped set Vanessa in a
better direction, making sure
her degree track was meet-
ing her goals and helping
her develop study skills and
time management. “Now I
know how to make time for
my schoolwork and job and
dance – and still be able to
schedule time just for me,”
Vanessa said.
TRiO provides academic
tutoring, advice in course
selection, financial aid and
scholarship assistance,
economic literacy, and help
in applying and transferring
to four-year universities. The
program also facilitates trips
to four-year schools so stu-
dents are able to see first-
hand their future facilities
and instructors.

5-year average on bushels,

Pottawatomie County in the

ing an environment for qual-
ity education and lifelong
learning opportunities than
to hire the best qualified fac-
ulty that we can,”? Holwerda
said.
Lange said acres that were
planted late were not as
good as the early planted.
He predicts that acres may
go up slightly in MKC’s trade
territory this fall, but he is
skeptical on how many acres
there is, saying “If corn and
beans come off in a timely
manner, there may be some
more wheat planted this fall.
Weather played such a fac-
tor in acreage this year.”
Eric Sperber, GM/CEO at
Cornerstone Ag, in Colby,
said this was “one of the
quickest harvests we’ve
had in a long time,” report-
ing that they took in 95% of
their receipts between July
10-19. He said that yields
were excellent in northwest
Kansas, with customers call-
ing it their “best crop ever”
and a “once in a lifetime
crop.” Test weights were also
very good, averaging 61.5
to 62 pounds per bushel.
He reports that the proteins
were the lowest average he
has seen in his 15 years with
Cornerstone, averaging 10.7
percent.
Sperber said they took in
more hard white wheat this
year than in the previous
three years combined. He
said the majority of the hard
white wheat was the Kan-
sas Wheat Alliance variety
Joe, and that farmers were
pleased with Joe. Some
farmers reported that they
planted Joe last fall because
of concerns about wheat
streak mosaic virus and its
resistance to the disease.

Afflictions
Las aflicciones político-
moral en que ha caído
nuestra nación, tiene raíces
profundas. Es fácil apuntar
el dedo buscando culpables,
pero identificar la causa es
más difícil porque se requi-
ere conocer algo de historia
para analizar y emitir opinio-
nes serias sobre esto.
Esta decadencia político-
moral se agudizó con los
escándalos de la era Clinton;
continuó con la invasión
injustificada de Irak, bajo la
administración de George
W. Bush, siguió su curso
durante la administración de
Barack Obama y empeoró
con la subida al poder de
Donald Trump. Y si ahonda-
mos mas en la historia,
retrocedamos a la era Nixon.
Desde la controversial
elección presidencial de
2016 que dividió profunda-
mente al país, da la impre-
sión que la aparición de
candidatos con un record
moralmente aceptable, un
destacado nivel educativo
y experiencia política, ya es
cosa del pasado. Si el anti-
guo filósofo Diógenes viviera,
probablemente andaría
caminando por las calles de
nuestro país con su linterna
en mano diciendo que busca
un hombre honesto para
practicar política.
En el pasado reciente
fuimos testigos de la subida
de políticos quienes todavía
tenían un record moral-
mente aceptable. Uno de
esos fue el ya desaparecido
Senador John McCain. Esta
clase de políticos habían ya
servido a su nación en dife-
rentes terrenos y tenían la
experiencia política que les
ayudaba a hacerse una idea
clara sobre las necesidades
de la nación.
El vacío dejado por esos
políticos fue el terreno fértil
que permitió que nuestro
actual Presidente llegara a
la Casa Blanca. Trump fue
muy astuto y tomó ventaja
de la reducida capacidad
político-moralde sus oponen-
tes y lanzó exitosamente una
plataforma política contra
los inmigrantes echando
mano del nacionalismo.
Su llamado repercutió
tremendamente entre un
sector de la población que
permanecía políticamente
dormida.
Actualmente, los políti-
cos de ambos partidos
están más ocupados en
buscar sus pecados para
enrostrárselos entre ellos
mismos. Entonces tienen
pocas cosas positivas que
ofrecer para aliviar las he-
ridas morales de esta gran
nación. Lo que me preocupa
es la manera en que estos
nuevos políticos hacen sus
campañas, porque estas se
parecen más y mas a las
contiendas electoreras de
los países del tercer mundo,
donde generalmente los
políticos imponen su volun-
tad asumiendo actitudes
egoístas que degeneran en
tiranías.

The political-moral afflic-
tions the U.S. is passing
through, have deep roots.
It’s easy to point the finger
seeking who to blame. To
identify the cause is more
difficult, because it is neces-
sary to know some history
to analyze and issue serious
opinions about it.
The political-moral decline
increased with the Clinton’s
era scandals. It continued
with the unjustified invasion
of Iraq under the George W.
Bush administration and
under the Obama adminis-
tration, and it worsened with
the rise of Donald Trump. If
go back, we need to mention
the Nixon era.
Since the 2016 controver-
sial presidential election that
divided the country deeply,
it seems also that candi-
dates with a fair moral and
educational background are
no longer available. If the
ancient Greek philosopher
Diogenes lived, he prob-
ably would walk on the U.S.
streets with his lantern,
saying: “I seek for an honest
man.”
In the recent past, we
witnessed the rise of politi-
cians who had an accept-
able moral background. One
of those few, was deceased
Senator John McCain. Many
of those politicians had
already served their country
and they had political experi-
ence that helped them to
have a clear picture of the
country’s needs.
The void left by those men
was the fertile terrain that
allowed Mr. Trump to win the
office. Trump was very astute
to take advantage of his
unqualified contenders by
launching a political platform
biased against immigrants,
appealing to nationalism.
His call reverberated among
a population sector that was
politically asleep.
The current politicians of
both parties remain busy
looking for each other’s sins,
so they have few positive
things to offer to this great
country. With such political-
moral decadence, political
stability looks blurry. What
worries me is that the way
politicians are campaigning
is more and more like the
political contests of the third
world countries.
The current way the U.S.
politicians are practicing pol-
itics is not the historic and
traditional civilized way this
country showed the world
every four years in each
presidential election. Unfor-
tunately and apparently, that
era seems to be over.

Warning To
Livestock
Owners
With Texas, Colorado and
New Mexico reporting mul-
tiple confirmed cases of ve-
sicular stomatitis virus (VSV),
the Kansas Department of
Agriculture is encouraging
livestock owners to be aware
and take precautions, partic-
ularly with animals that may
be comingling with other
animals at competitions and
similar events. At this time,
there have been no cases of
VSV reported in Kansas.
VSV is a viral disease
which primarily affects hors-
es, but can also affect cattle,
sheep, goats, swine, llamas
and alpacas. The disease is
characterized by fever and

may refuse to eat and drink,
which can lead to weight
loss. There are no USDA-ap-
proved vaccines for VSV.
The primary way the virus
is transmitted is from biting
insects like black flies, sand
flies and midges. Owners
should consider treatments
to reduce insects where
animals are housed. VSV
can also be spread by nose-
to-nose contact between
animals. The virus itself usu-
ally runs its course in five to
seven days, and it can take
up to an additional seven
days for the infected animal
to recover from the symp-
toms. Premises with animals
diagnosed with VSV are
quarantined until at least 14
days after the last affected
animal is diagnosed.
VSV is considered a report-
able disease in Kansas.
Any person who suspects
their animals may have VSV
should contact their local
veterinarian or state animal
health official.

a lot from her father. The
teaching of her father
started early and continued
daily until her father retired
in 1999. She and her father

her father’s commitment
to serve the needy. During
her career, she traveled to

free to the poor. “My father
taught me that every human
is an individual with needs,
and that we should be

the community and with col-
leagues,” White said.
Through her long career
and long experience, she
also witnessed the changes
brought by technology into
the optometry field. She
said most treatment plans
changed, since the new
technology helps now to
diagnose glaucoma and
macular degeneration early.
“Medicine in the form of ge-
netics is less expensive than
ever before,” she said.
White said after her retire-
ment, she will continue her
mission trips to provide
eyecare to the less fortunate
of Central America. She
wants to spend more time
with her grandchildren and
also travel with her husband.
Doctor White’ clinic will now
be owned by two profes-
sional optometrists: Doctor
Lois Vierthaler Kessen and
associate Doctor Katherine
Burns. Doctor Vierthalen
Kessen own the optometry
clinic.
“You will be locking in the
dollar amount for the bud-
get,” Layton said, and he
added: “At the next hearing,
if you decide to add expendi-
tures, you will need to offset
that with reductions.”
Despite tax and other
revenue increases, the city
is projected to have General
Fund deficits in the near
future; $1.7 million in 2021,
$1.6 million in 2022, and
$2.4 million in 2023. Mark
Manning, Budget Officer for
the City of Wichita admit-
ted that debt is likely to
increase.
“We do expect our debt
levels to increase and our
metric go to increase over
the next several years, but
we do expect to be within
the benchmark level,” said
Manning.
Total expenditures pro-
posed for 2020 is $624.5
million; that’s a 10.3%
increase over this year’s esti-
mated $566.1 million, which
would be 12.1% higher than
2018 actual spending of
$504.9 million.The next
steps for the budget are
an August 6th hearing and
August 13th adoption at the
City Council.

Ford Motor Co. said biggest
trucks sale has increased
since the company shifted
production to Ohio from
Mexico in 2015. This change
helped sales reach their
highest level in more than
20 years.
Combined sales of the
F-650 and F-750 rose 83
percent in the first half of the
year, according to Ford. The
company said it had gained
nearly 5 percentage points
of share through April in the
Class 6 and 7 chassis-cab
segment. With almost 20
percent of the Class 6 and 7
chassis-cabmarket, the au-
tomaker now trails only truck
manufacturers International
and Freightliner.
The medium-duty trucks,
commonly used by construc-
tion and utility companies,
make the F-150 and even
some Super Duty models

But the number of Ford
dealerships that have made
room on their lots to sell the
high-margin behemoths has
risen 25 percent this year.
About 500 dealers now ser-
vice them, up from roughly
100 in 2015.

and servicing the medium
trucks last year after a facili-

Sales of the trucks have

in a post-peak market as

A majority of Americans
continue to think Donald
Trump is “un-presidential”
despite his approval ratings
hitting the highest point of
his time in office, a new poll
has found.
The survey highlights the
degree to which Mr. Trump
has a narrow but real path
to re-election. His approval
rating on most issues is net
negative, and more than
six in ten Americans say he
has acted in ways that are
un-presidential since he was
sworn into office.
Still, roughly one-fifth of
those who say he is not
presidential say they ap-
prove of the job he is doing,

and perceptions that he has
dealt with it effectively.
Mr Trump’s approval rating
among voting-age Americans
stands at 44 percent, edg-
ing up from 39 percent in
April, with 53 percent saying
they disapprove of him, the

Among registered voters,

of Trump while 50 percent
disapprove. In April, 42
percent of registered voters

the general election and
