Fusion Welding: Arc Welding (AW)

A fusion welding process in which coalescence of the

metals is achieved by the heat from an electric arc
between an electrode and the work piece

Electric energy from the arc produces temperatures

(5500 C), hot enough to melt any metal.

Most AW processes add filler metal to increase volume

and strength of weld joint.

Fusion Welding: Arc Welding (AW)

A pool of molten metal is formed near electrode tip,

and as electrode is moved along joint, molten weld
pool solidifies in its wake

Two Basic Types of Arc Welding
(Based on Electrodes)
1. Consumable electrodes
Consumed during welding process
Added to weld joint as filler metal
In the form of rods or spools of wire

2. Non-consumable electrodes
Not consumed during welding process but does get
gradually eroded
Filler metal must be added separately if it is added

Carbon Arc Welding
Carbon Arc Welding (CAW) is a welding process, in which
heat is generated by an electric arc struck between
an carbon electrode and the work piece. The arc heats and
melts the work pieces edges, forming a joint.
Carbon arc welding is the oldest welding process.
If required, filler rod may be used in Carbon Arc Welding.
End of the rod is held in the arc zone. The molten rod
material is supplied to the weld pool
The Carbon Electrode is connected to –ve terminal and work
piece is connected to +ve terminal, because +ve terminal is
hotter (4000°C) than the –ve terminal (3000°C)

Electrode holder
The electrode holder is designed for the air carbon arc
process .
The holder includes a small circular grip head which
contains the air jets to direct compressed air along the
electrode
It also has a groove for gripping the electrode
Valve is included in the holder for turning the compressed air
on and off

Carbon Arc Welding Torch

The torch holds an electrode in a swivel head that has one or

multiple air holds. This way the air jet stays aligned with the
electrode regardless of the electrode angle to the torch.
The torch is cooled by air
