Confusion Between the Speaker and Listener

Confusion is the quality or state of being bewildered or unclear. This is the situation
which people are uncertain about what to do or are able to understand something clearly.

Obviously, misinterpretation to each other can lead to the point of total confusion. The
most typical example was the native speakers and listeners. The term ‘native speaker’ is an
implication of someone who has ‘internalized’ a language rather than learning it deliberately.
Their language is usually the language of their parents speak and or the language of their country
of origin. It is the only language of monolingual person, and likely the first language of
multilingual person which acquired naturally in their native environment. It may serve as the
basis for their sociolinguistic identity. This include the characteristics of mastery in idiomatic
forms, learnt the language in childhood, comprehension of regional and social variance.

This causes a great deal of confusion for native Chinese to understand the native English
because the two languages have opposite logic with the combination of text. Thus if a native
Chinese is not much familiar with English, they’ll definitely misinterpret a conversation
involving those raised words by the speaker. This native Chinese and English differ in the types
of information they used to convey meaning in words: unlike English, Chinese uses lexical tones
to contrast word meanings. The difference between Chinese and English, poses word recognition
difficulties for English-speaking learners of native Chinese.

Moreover, all learners of English are worried who speak grammatical English can still
sound very un-English to the native speakers of English. In fact, they often misunderstand or get
them misunderstood with native speakers of English. The understanding of the nature and
sources of verbal miscommunication between the native English speaker and the Chinese learner
of English might happen worst when they will have face-to-face conversation.

Confusion happens in the communication because of the language used. Native speakers
are at a disadvantage when they are in a lingua franca situation. ‘Lingua franca’ is also known as
the bridge of language, common language, trade language, vehicular language, or link language
is a language or dialect used to make communication worldwide, which in the case of
conversation between English and Chinese they are native speaker that’s why they misuse and
misinterpret the spoken English due to inadequate linguistic competence, pragmatic competence,
and intercultural competence or social differences.

Then, the only thing we can think as a disadvantage of native English is that, because at
this brief moment in time English is the Lingua Franca, It encourage some native English
speakers to not bother learning a second language and because native English speakers has a
fluent English speaking they are being rude to those who do not speak English to them.

To avoid communication confusion and frustration we need to took our time to look up
the word “flexibility” means we must considerate each other, and if interpretation is needed, why
not?. In this matter we can have a good communication.
