1. INTRODUCTION AND HIGHLIGHTS
The MAX-NG Access Network provides universal access to NGN Core for
subscribers reachable over copper for ordinary subscriber line, V5.2 interface
and ISDN interface. It consists of approximately 2000 C-DOT MAX technology
exchanges in the BSNL network which will be migrated to VoIP Gateways by
upgrading hardware and software in each MAX exchange. Each MAX
exchange consists of a Central Module (CM) which inter-connects up to 32
Base Modules (BMs) in the exchange.
Migration of MAX exchange to MAX-NG involves complete removal of the
Central Module and upgrade of hardware in the Base Module. Hardware
upgrade in the Base Module involves replacement of 24 card controller complex
with redundant pair of VoIP Line Access Gateways (LAG). The LAGs sit behind
the Line Termination Units (LTUs) of existing Base Modules. There will be no
change made to the existing LTUs of the Base Module. As a consequence,
subscribers of MAX exchanges shall remain completely unaffected by the
migration exercise.
Various types of subscriber and trunk units in existing MAX exchanges which
terminate E1 Links shall be replaced with corresponding VoIP Gateways in a
manner completely transparent to the equipment installed at remote end of the
E1 Link. As a consequence, equipment at the remote end of the E1 link shall
remain completely unaffected by the migration exercise. As PSTN MAX
exchanges implement several legacy protocols which were introduced in
telecom networks in over two decades of MAX deployment, each legacy
protocol requires an explicit protocol gateway for connectivity to standard NGN
Core network. These gateways covert signaling and media flows to SIP over IP
and RTP-over-IP flows respectively. Different types of protocol gateways are
used for upgrading MAX exchanges to MAX-NG.
In essence, the modifications in MAX hardware and software are confined to
handling the subscriber interface and the remaining call processing is carried
out by the other NGN core components of MAX-NG solution. This architecture
permits retention of existing terminal units for only as long as they are
necessary in the BSNL network without having to retain the associated back
end processing modules.

1.1 MAX-NG ACCESS NETWORK

The MAX-NG Access comprises of mainly two types of Systems as mentioned
below.

2
1.1.1 CENTRAL ACCESS CONTROL UNIT (CACU)
Every Central Module of MBM system will be converted to CACU System with
6-Slot Chassis which will house 02 Nos. of Network Access Gateway(NGTJ)
Cards (for SG/MG/V5/PRI applications), 02 Nos. of Main LAN Switch (C-DOT
Aggregator) and 02 Nos. of Ethernet to E1 Main (EBM) Card. There are 2
additional slots of smaller form factor with two Shelf Manager (SLM) Cards.
The CACU Chassis is fed with two independent pair of redundant -48V power
feeds in the backplane. There is a Fan tray at the bottom housing four Fans for
cooling the Chassis and the temperature sensor card with digital temperature
sensing for each slot at the top of the CACU Chassis.
The front plane face plates of the CACU Chassis cards have mainly the LED
indicators for status and the motherboard at the backplane of the Chassis has
mainly various connectors like RJ45 Ethernet ports, Euro E1 connectors, RS232
serial ports and power feed connectors. In the front face plate of MLS cards,
apart from the LEDs, there are two optical SFP connectors for uplink
connectivity with BSNL MPLS router.
All gateways use the NGTJ card (NGTJ card version APC-NGTJ36/D-SE3) and
differ only in the functional software release loaded on the card. Besides these
gateways, two copies of Ethernet to E1 conversion modules with each card
supporting up to 16/32 E1s can equipped in the other two universal slots for
providing E1 connectivity to LAGs at remote BM sites. Uplink to the NGN Core
Network provided with 1 Gbps dual redundant links from each Aggregator
(MLS card).
Following Gateway applications can be loaded over the NGTJ cards over
CACU:
 V5.2 Access Gateways (V5AG) for converting bi-directional V5.2 circuits
landing on C DOT MAX exchanges over E1 links to SIP based VoIP calls
in the MAX-NG network.
 PRI Access Gateways (PRIAG) for converting bi-directional ISDN PRI
links landing on C DOT MAX exchanges to SIP based VoIP calls in the
MAX-NG network. The requirement of PRI AG is dependent upon the
total number of ISDN PRI links working in the exchange.
 Signaling Gateways (SG) for converting bi-directional SS7 signaling
channels landing on C-DOT MAX exchanges over E1 links to SIP based
VoIP calls in the MAX-NG network.
 Trunk Media Gateways (TMG) for converting bi-directional A-law
circuits landing on C DOT MAX exchanges over E1 links to SIP based
VoIP calls in the MAX-NG network.

1.1.2 LINE ACCESS GATEWAY UNIT (LAGU)

Every Co-located Line BM and Remote BM (RSU) will be converted to 2-Slot
LAGU System having two LAG cards (NGTJ card version APC-NGTJ36/D-

3
AE3) in redundant mode. Each slot contains NGTK Card Line Access Gateway
Application with Integrated EEB module.
This Card Frame, though known as 2-slot configuration has two more slots
which are used for housing existing BMs TSI cards two copies. This variant is
used only in the Line BM configurations with both remote and co-located cases
included. The collocated BMs in the main exchange site will have the LAGs
uplinked via aggregator in 6-slot Card Frame however for the remote BMs the
E1s links are terminated at the EBM equipped in 6-slot Card Frame.

1.2 MAX-NG ACCESS HARDWARE

MAX-NG Access Hardware present under the two type of card frames; CACU and LAGU is as
mentioned below.
