Identifying Acids and Alkalis Activity

The document describes a science experiment to identify acids and alkalis using litmus paper. Students will test 14 common household substances by making predictions, recording results in a table, and answering 3 questions. They will predict and test whether each substance is acidic, alkaline, or neutral by observing the effect on red and blue litmus paper. This will help them understand the properties of acids and bases.

IDENTIFYING ACIDS AND ALKALIS

Procedure:
1. If applicable, make a solution of all the substances that you will be testing. For example, aspirin should be
dissolved first in distilled water before you can test whether it’s alkaline or acidic.
2. Place the 14 solutions in appropriately labeled test tubes.
3. Based on the physical characteristics, predict whether the substance that you will test is an acid or an alkali.
Write your predictions in the table below.
4. Use blue and red litmus paper strips to determine whether the substance is an acid, alkali, or neutral. Dip a
stirring rod into the solution in the test tube. Then transfer one or two drops of the solution into a strip of litmus
paper.

Prediction (Acid, Litmus Test

Substance Base, or Neutral) Red Litmus Blue Litmus What is it?
Orange Juice
Lemon Juice
Aspirin
Alka-Seltzer
Shampoo
Hair conditioner
Tap water
Distilled water
Vinegar
Body lotion
Soap bar
Perfume
Rubbing alcohol
Coffee

Questions: Write your answers at the back of this paper.

1. What factors did you use as basis in predicting whether a solution is an acid or a base?
2. Is there any substance in your sample that did not produce any effect on the color of the litmus papers? If
there is, what does it mean?
3. Will you be able to identify a solution as an acid, alkali, or neutral by using only one color of litmus paper?
Why or why not?
