PATHWAYS TO THE MBA PROGRAM
The University of New Brunswick (UNB) Saint John offers a number of pathways into our MBA Program;
providing additional support for students who need English language training through Saint John College
and additional academic support through our MBA Qualifying Year.

PRE-MBA PROGRAM
Starting in September of each year, the Pre-MBA Program is a full-time, eight-month intensive program
offered by Saint John College and UNB Saint John’s MBA Program. It is designed to help international
students bridge the gap between their undergraduate education, work experience and UNB Saint John’s
MBA Program entry requirements.

Students who need to improve their level of English language ability to an IELTS 7.0 (or equivalent) can be
conditionally admitted to our MBA Program pending completion of the Pre-MBA Program.

Completion of the Pre-MBA Program (CGPA 3.0 or higher) provides a language pathway to the MBA
Program and also qualifies as one year of work experience.

MBA QUALIFYING YEAR

Students who do not have the required undergraduate minimum CGPA of 3.0/4.3 are encouraged to contact
us to discuss our MBA Qualifying Year. This one-year of additional study in business courses provides an
opportunity for students to sharpen their business skills while boosting their overall Grade Point Average
(GPA). Courses are taken at the undergraduate level, in consultation with the MBA team, and follow the
traditional semester schedule of eight months. Students accepted into this program who maintain a GPA
of 3.0 or higher and successfully achieve a GMAT score of 550 or higher are eligible for our MBA Program.

The MBA at UNB is a top-notch option for any student seeking individual attention,
knowledgeable and experienced professors, and a more personal MBA experience
than a larger program could offer. Most of the classes are between 15-30 students and
have a mixed composition of adult learners with a wide range of job experiences.

The professors provided us with real-world examples of how the concepts we were
learning in class were being applied in the business world. These connections allowed
us to learn practical skills which will be applied in our careers. It closed the gaps and
linked the different business topics together, leading to a very interesting experience.

ENRIQUE MANCILLA,
SENIOR ASSOCIATE, PWC CANADA
Studying my Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree at the University of New
Brunswick Saint John was one of the most rewarding experiences of my professional
career. Not only did I obtain world-class education from some of the best professors
in the beautiful Maritimes, but I also acquired the necessary skill set to succeed
professionally in Canada.

Every single class was an undeniably different and gratifying experience, from managing
the manufacturing, marketing, and finances of your own car company within a software
simulation, to creating your own business plan while receiving professional advice from
savant and recognized entrepreneurs.

RAMYA SHARON RATHOD,

PROJECT MANAGER AT MARINER PARTNERS
As a student, I had the privilege of being a student ambassador for Pond-Deshpande
Centre (one of the catalysts for innovation in New Brunswick), to participate in the 2013
World Social Forum in Calgary, work on a real-time (ConnexionWorks) business plan,
issues in the local economy and much more. Through the program I also met some
remarkable professors; some were firm and some were kind, some taught me to be
passionate, and others to relax and smile. It has been a couple of years since I graduated
and, even today, I know for a fact that if I am stuck anywhere or need a counselor, I have
a mentor and a confidant in my professors and that they are only a call away.

PROGRAM
OUTLINE
The MBA Program at UNB Saint John is comprised of five modules scheduled consecutively over 12 months,
with the first module beginning in October. The first two modules of study provide MBA candidates a strong
foundation in business essentials, while the final modules allow students to choose electives that offer a
focus in International Business, General Management, Entrepreneurship and Technology Management, or
Project Management. During the final two modules, students will also be required to complete either a nine
or 10-week consulting business development project or a four-month study abroad at one of our partner
institutions.

OR Study Abroad and Elective Courses

8
YOU
FIRST
By module three, you can choose electives in a number of areas.

• Electives with a focus on International Business provide you the opportunity to gain a deep understanding
of doing business in other trade regions by pursuing studies in North America and either Europe or Asia.

•
If you are interested in growing a sustainable business, you may choose electives in the field of
Entrepreneurship and Technology Management, and pursue an opportunity for a business consultancy
project in a new venture or established technology firm.

• Electives in the area Project Management are designed to prepare you to challenge the PMI examination
and gain either the PMP or CAPM designation.

• Alternately, you may complete a Masters Research option with a UNB Saint John faculty member.

9
INTERNATIONAL
BUSINESS
The UNB Saint John MBA Program partners with schools in China and France to deliver the required
European or Asian study abroad option.

SEIZE A WORLD OF BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY

In Module 4, students can choose to take a number of electives that focus on International Business.
Students who choose these electives may undertake European studies in France or Asian studies in China.
The North American electives will be taught at UNB Saint John.

The international experience goes beyond the textbook and the case manual, and is lived every day through
a focus on international business. You will learn about business in Asia, Europe, and North America while
living in the marketplace.

PRINCE ATTAKORA-OFORI,
PRODUCT ADMINISTRATION TECHNICIAN OF
DESJARINS GLOBAL ASSET MANAGEMENT AND
DIRECTOR OF ATTAKORA ENTERPRISE
I initially enrolled in the Burgundy School of Business as an exchange student but later was offered
the opportunity to enrol in a full-time second degree, MSc. in Advanced Corporate Finance.
The syllabus and curriculum had a European emphasis. As someone who had had education
in Ghana and Canada, the European perspective was very appealing. In the wake of a global
economic meltdown, companies are cutting down their payroll and looking to get more from
their employees. The dual-degree program equips you with the needed skills set to beat the
competition. I am currently working in a prestigious financial institution and I feel very proud and
honored to be the first student to graduate from the dual-degree program. It has been a couple
of years since I graduated and, even today, I know for a fact that if I am stuck anywhere or need
a counselor, I have a mentor and a confidant in my professors and that they are only a call away.
10
EARN A DUAL DEGREE
UNB Saint John MBA students can now apply to study at the AACSB accredited Burgundy School of Business
for an additional eight months on top of the traditional four month study abroad period to achieve a dual
degree; the MBA from UNB Saint John and a Master of Science (MSc) from Burgundy. The dual degree
is included in the UNB Saint John MBA Program tuition; students are only responsible for their living and
travel expenses.

Students can choose to earn an MSc in one of the following five areas:

• MSc in Advanced Corporate Finance

• MSc in Arts and Cultural Management
• MSc in Global Marketing & Negotiation
• MSc in International Business Development
• MSc in Wine Management

EXPERIENCE THE WORLD FROM SAINT JOHN

Students at UNB Saint John can also choose to study the International Business electives through our General
Management stream and opt out of the study abroad option. This allows you to gain the fundamentals of
international marketing, finance, business and law without ever leaving the UNB Saint John Campus. You
get an added competitive advantage because of the international profile of our class; you could be studying
with students from up to fifteen different countries at once.

11
GENERAL
MANAGEMENT
The General Management MBA Program at the University of New Brunswick Saint John provides a
challenging learning environment and gives graduates a strong business foundation to launch their career.

This program helps our graduates develop their managerial potential in areas relevant to the modern
economy.

All general management students complete five modules and the program is capped off with a business
consultancy project where you implement the skills learned during the MBA.

12
ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND
TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT
Have you thought about starting your own company? By choosing electives in Entrepreneurship and
Technology Management, you will gain the tools to forge your own path and be provided the opportunity
to interact with a variety of entrepreneurs, including some UNB Saint John alumni who have successfully
launched their own start ups.

Graduate business education in Entrepreneurship and Technology Management brings together business
and technology to produce innovation. Sample courses in this area include Management of Innovations,
Social Entrepreneurship and Entrepreneurial Social Marketing.

WORK WITH A STARTUP

By choosing electives in the entrepreneurship and technology area, you will have the opportunity to
complete a business consultancy where you can work firsthand with local entrepreneurs or on an innovative
project. New Brunswick has a thriving startup scene and a technology incubator – Propel ICT.

13
PROJECT
MANAGEMENT
Project Management is one of the fastest growing areas of employment in North America and appeals
particularly to individuals with backgrounds in engineering, operations, and technology. Students who
choose electives that focus on Project Management will be able to take advantage of many partnerships in
the community including the New Brunswick chapter of the Project Management Institute (PMI).

These electives examine the methodology and best practices for Project Management and are taught by
faculty who combine in-depth knowledge with broad industry experience.

The program is capped off with a business consultancy project where you implement the skills learned
during the MBA. The project counts as Project Management experience for your PMP or CAPM certification
application through the Project Management Institute. Sample electives in this area include Logistics and
Supply Chain Management and Project Management Monitoring and Control.

14
RESEARCH
OPTION
Have a burning question? The Research Option allows you to explore the most recent challenges in business
through literature reviews and primary research in areas of particular interest to you. After completing nine
foundation courses, students taking the research option will choose courses relevant to their area of focus
and complete a report under the guidance of their faculty supervisor.

Guidance and advice from our faculty will help you choose the options that suit you best. MBA staff can help
you scope your interests and assist in finding a faculty supervisor. You will emerge from the program equipped
to pursue your own objectives without the limitations of a “one-size-fits-all” educational experience.

15
FACULTY
The UNB Saint John MBA faculty and staff work hard to ensure you receive a unique and rewarding learning
experience. MBA students at UNB Saint John have a distinct opportunity over students in other MBA
programs. Not only do you have the opportunity to study with faculty who are world experts in their field,
but you also enjoy the experience of being more than just a number. Our faculty and staff will make an effort
to get to know you as a person and will remember you for many years after graduation. Our low student to
professor ratio ensures that your professors will know your name.

Faculty members maintain close ties with business and public sector communities, as MBA courses are
taught by both full-time faculty members and seasoned professionals from the local community. Our
dedicated staff will partner with you throughout your studies to ensure your academic journey at UNB Saint
John is seamless, from Module 1 to graduation.

Our faculty is connected to the community. Each member brings their business network to the classroom. Our
faculty and staff are involved in many community organizations, including our local Chamber of Commerce,
FUSION Saint John, and the YMCA. Professors organize interesting guest speakers for classes and provide
students with opportunities to get involved in the community. Many of our professors are entrepreneurs in
their own right and have started businesses in everything from technology to real estate.

Our program has partnerships with local groups, including Enterprise Saint John, an organization that
oversees economic development in the greater Saint John area; and the Pond-Deshpande Centre, which
acts as a catalyst to advance innovation and entrepreneurship in New Brunswick.

We also have deep connections with regional businesses, including energy company Irving Oil,
telecommunications company Bell Aliant and forestry and transportation company J.D. Irving, Limited.

SAINT
AWESOME
Saint John, New Brunswick is a city reinventing itself. Located on the Bay of Fundy, the city has stunning
nineteenth-century architecture and beautiful ocean and river landscapes on all sides. Our traditional
economy and port connects us to hundreds of destinations around the world. Our growing IT sector has
put Saint John on the map as one of the seven Most Intelligent Communities in Canada. Incredible dining;
memorable entertainment; striking sights - as the oldest incorporated city in Canada, no other place in the
country offers the experiences of Saint John.

The Maritimes are known for their hospitality. Regardless of where you are from, you will feel welcome
in Saint John. Many opportunities exist on and off campus for you to build a new network of friends,
colleagues and business associates. FUSION, a group for young professionals, hosts quarterly mixers where
you will have the opportunity to meet and mingle with other newcomers and business leaders in a relaxed
setting. The Saint John Multicultural and Newcomers Resource Centre is also available to help you feel
comfortable in your new home.

17
WHY SAINT JOHN?
LOW COST OF DOING BUSINESS
New Brunswick was recently named the lowest business cost location in Canada and the U.S. in KPMG’s
2016 Competitive Alternatives study on featured cities. On average, New Brunswick cities have an 18%
operating cost advantage over the G7 countries average.

WORLD-CLASS COMMUNICATIONS INFRASTRUCTURE

New Brunswick has always been first to market in providing access to leading connection technologies like
fiber connectivity, high-speed data, rural broadband access and 4G satellite data offered through multiple
suppliers.

MULTIMODAL TRANSPORTATION INFRASTRUCTURE

New Brunswick is closer to Europe than any U.S. seaport, with same-day access to more than 100 million
North Americans. We are connected by U.S. I-95, air, rail, and five seaports.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

In business, not just real estate, location matters. Strategically located on Canada’s east coast, Saint John’s
location makes it the ideal business choice to reach multiple time zones during the workday. Because of our
time zone, companies located in New Brunswick easily do business with Western Europe and the Americas.

18
UNSURPASSED QUALITY OF LIFE
Life outside the office just couldn’t be better than it is in Saint John. Imagine a place where you’re only five
minutes from work and five minutes from play. Some New Brunswick communities have been named among
Canada’s “Best Places To Live” (MoneySense), enjoying shorter commutes, affordable housing, less traffic,
and an exceptional quality of life.

LOW COST OF LIVING

One of the reasons Saint Johners can live life on our terms is because of our very affordable cost of living
- it’s one of biggest changes newcomers to the community enjoy. In almost all cases our cost of living
is lower than elsewhere in Canada, and most of the world (~10-30% lower than other Canadian cities).
Owning your home (vs. renting) is the biggest differentiator in cost of living - home ownership here is still
incredibly affordable, even though the housing market remained strong throughout the recent recession. If
you choose to rent the average price of a one-bedroom apartment is $700 CDN.
