INTRODUCTION

The concept of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) can be simplified to that of an

electronic barcode and can be used to identify, track, sort or detect library holdings at the
circulation desk and in the daily stock maintenance. This system, consist of smart RFID
labels, hardware and software, provides libraries with more effective way of managing their
collections while providing greater customer service to their patrons. The technology works
through flexible, paper-thin smart labels, approximately 2x2 inches in size, which allows
it to be placed inconspicuously on the inside cover of each book in a library’s collection.
The tag consists of an etched antenna and a tiny chip which stores vital bibliographic data
including a unique Accession number to identify each item. This contrasts with a barcode
label, which does not store any information, but merely points to a database. These smart
labels are applied directly on library books and can be read with an RFID
interrogator/scanner. Line of sight is not essential for reading the tags with the scanner,
therefore, the books require much less human handling to be read and processed.
Middleware or Savant software integrates the reader hardware with the existing Library
Automation Software for seamless functioning of circulation.

RFID-based systems have been implemented for efficient document tracking purpose
throughout the libraries that combine, easier and faster charging and discharging of
documents, security of materials, inventorying, stock verification and shelf handling. RFID
tag’s transponder listens for a radio query from the reader and responds by transmitting
their unique ID code. Most RFID tags have no batteries, they use the power from the initial
radio signal to transmit their response.

Instead of separate readers, the attendance can implement by the webcam in PC or mobile
phones with RFID tags. Searching and sorting misplaced books among huge books is a
very difficult task often. The main difficulties for the librarians are searching the misplaced
books which are left in wrong location. The relocation of books in the assigned place is
very complex task in day to day library access. To reduce the librarian work, the false book
location is can also indicated to the librarian through RFID sensors.

Background of the problem

Traditionally the record at an establishment is usually done in a book register. It is time

consuming and space consuming process. It is very difficult to verify the record of the
student over long periods. Manual method is very difficult to verify the record of the
student in book register in the library for a week or above. Here, chances of doing
malpractice in marking attendance are high. The Library Management System using
Barcode and RFID is an integrated system that offers an effective solution of managing
information especially for large scale environment. It combines the RFID technology and
security devices to ensure the information of the student are always been monitored and
secured. This system enable the organization to track and monitor selected students. This
system will see if the book is already closed or not.

Overview of the current state of the technology

Objectives of the study

The goal of this thesis is to find out whether RFID technology offers any significant
benefits for Library Management and how do these benefits reflect to customer satisfaction.
Also, in order for a library to get the best possible benefit from using RFID they need to
take it into account certain factors well before making any investment decisions. These
factors will also be discussed about.

The purposed system specially aims:

1. Develop a better Library Management System using Barcode and RFID for students.

2. Provide fast and reliable results.

3. Lessen the errors.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

Foreign Studies

New technologies are creating new opportunities for libraries. Radio Frequency
Identification (RFID) is an upcoming technology which has recently attracted the interest
of the research community because of the astonishing benefits it offers over the other
existing identification and data capturing technologies. Several related studies have been
carried out by the academic community which devoted to the technical improvement of
RFID technologies. Dipti and Sharma (2015); Neeraj and Preeti (2014); Sunaia (2014);
Shamshul and Amir
(2013); Hasan (2012); Subash (2012); Sadiq and Amina (2012); Sanku and Moutusi
(2011); Mamadpurapur and Rajgoli (2011); Kumar and Kaur (2010); Boss (2004); Ayre
(2004); etc. have studied different aspects of RFID application, awareness use etc. The
present study is an attempt to analyze the use and importance of RFID by the research
scholars of Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala. (Shaini & Gopinath , 2015)

Foreign Literature

According to Primer (2005), for many businesses automating the collecting of employee
attendance data when employees begin their shifts is still a manual process. Even business
that has automated or computerized processes such as scheduling, inventory, purchasing,
general ledger and payroll processing still use manual methods such as time cards or
attendance sheets to collect time and attendance data. NOVAtime (2007), the system that
will give management the power to not only utilize the tools we have available to us today,
but will continue to grow and evolve, giving it the capability to incorporate and utilize the
tools the new millennium promises to bring us. NOVA time has brought a system designed
for growth while maintaining the maximum in flexibility. Where the sophistication lies
within the programmed mechanism of the system, allowing for a quick and simple
implementation and employee training cycle. After all the true test of a system is not only
in the production and wealth of reporting, but in the simplicity and ease of its operation, in
conjunction with a simple and accommodating implementation program. (Ramon &
Faloran, 2005)

Local Literature

Aquilan (2004) made a comparable thesis on the automation of records the time in and time
out of every student using barcode system. It tends to eliminate the manual recording
system of time and attendance and also include salary computation of each employee based
on the time and attendance reports. Ramon Faloran(2005) wrote in the article “The
Computer Edge of the New Employment and Opportunities “in the Philippine Daily
Inquirer. He stated that computer gives you a different feeling about what is happening in
the company. Business will be highly competitive and innovative because the computer
provides instant information. Study by Cantoma (2004) in her thesis entitled “Computer
Library System for St. James Academy” stated that, in manual system in retrieving,
maintaining security and piling records take place because of the years gone by.
Furthermore, these files were only kept in envelopes and folders in wooden rocks. There
are also instances when the right information is given to a wrong person, which affect
quality of service. (Aquilan & Aquilan, 2004)

Local Studies

Mendrez (2007) made a similar study for Vision Designer Inc. It has an identification
machine aimed at verifying a person entering through the swiping of identification cards.
After entering their given code number, the identification cards are swiped in the machines
card reader to trigger the verification. If access granted, the micro switch will then
automatically unlock to allow enter. This will help a lot in monitoring attendances
accurately and more precise. A group of computer engineers in Rebisco Biscuits
Corporation proposed a thesis report for what is the same Innodata Corps is implementing
right now a computerized daily time record as an alternative for Bundy clock. The means
of getting inside the company premises is by swiping cards into a machine that reads every
record of each employee then monitor and displays the time a particular employee logs in
and out. In the 2005 annual report of the Forest Products Research and Development
Institute under the Department of Science and Technology, it is said that,

STI College Balagtas 7

“The computerized database and attendance on Forest Products Research and Development
Institute was designed to facilitate the Institute's data entry, processing, computation and
maintenance of employee time and attendance transactions. The system allows employees
to log in/out as the swipe their IDs through a barcode reader attached to a computer
terminal. The processing forms include those for legal holidays, travel order, tardiness,
under time, vacation and sick leave. Pertinent Report forms have been designed for easier
access to all these data.” (Mendrez, 2007)

METHODOLOGY

Methodology

To solve an actual problems in an industry, software developer or a team of developers

must integrate with a development strategy that include the process, methods and tools
layer and generic phases. This strategy is often referred to a process model or a software
developing paradigm. The spiral model is a risk-driven process model generator for
software projects. Based on the unique risk patterns of a given project, the spiral model
guides a team to adopt elements of one or more process models, such as incremental,
waterfall, or evolutionary prototyping. We choose the spiral model because it is easy to use
there's no restriction if ever we can encounter bugs or any kind of problem that can
damaged the system we can easily solve it.
The steps of Spiral Model are:
• Determine Objectives
• Identify and Resolve Risk
• Development and Test
• Plan the next Iteration
