Consumption of Coffee and the Study Habits of Grade 12 STEM students in Davao

Doctors College, Inc.

Theoretical Framework

This study is anchored to Caffeine and Activation theory (2006) which stated in
section IV, the effects consuming of caffeine plays an important role of improving the
study habits of students. Caffeine can have effects on mood state, cognition, and
performance of an individual

This theory is supported by Berlyne et al,. (1949) Arousal theory describes how
mental arousal is necessary for effective functioning in that we need a certain level of
activation in order to be sufficiently motivated to achieve goals. They constructed the
arousal paradigm

Michael Yassa and the John Hopkins researchers (2014) found that caffeine has a
positive effect on individuals long-term memory. Yassa also shows that caffeine
enhances certain memories at least up to 24 hours after it is consumed.

Gunnars (2018) added coffee can make an individual smarter, caffeine works in the
brain by blocking the effects of the emotion and mood of a person (inhibitory
neurotransmitter) called adenosine. Many controlled studies have examined the effects
of caffeine on the brain, demonstrating that caffeine can temporarily improve mood,
reaction time, memory, vigilance and general brain function.

Furthermore, as cited by Eysenck’s (1947) theory of personality extraversion-

introversion which claimed that study habits are concerned with the study locations,
frequency of study breaks, and study time.
